Evangelicals: How do you know you have "Saving Faith"?

It’s a general statement toward Gentiledom which has now, by the grace of God, received the gospel message.
They have not only received the Gospel message, but they have also believed (v. 20) and, consequently, have been grafted in the olive tree.

Romans 11:20-22

**20Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith. Do not be conceited, but fear;
21for if God did not spare the natural branches, He will not spare you, either.
22Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God’s kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off. **

He is clearly exclusively talking to Gentiles that stand by their faith (i.e. Christians).

God Bless,
Michael

You know I could just egnore you kind of like you have done my questions up until now. That looks to me like your not interested in anything I have to say.
YOU asked me to answer your questions. I cannot do that if you can’t wait to refute my answers. Why did you ask them in the first place?
The only question you were interested in is #1?
Actually, I wasn’t even intereted in that one but because you persisted I decided to graciously fulfill your request. But I don’t like your attitude, nevertheless, I’ll answer them, one at a time and as my time allows.
I still dont agree over all your view of things
I don’t expect you to.
you still have 12 more questions to answer so who knows.
Who knows!
Ill wait for you to respond to all the questions before I respond. I understand it is easy to get behind when I ask you something after each question.
Actually you don’t “ask” you refute.
So answer the questions If I see where your questions dont line up with scripture then I will respond.
Are you asking the questions to hear my answers or to act as judge?
But it is not that I am not interested. Its called a debate
No, you asked me to answer YOUR questions.
if I was not interest I would egnore you and your questions.
They’re YOUR questions, not mine.
here is you chance to answer the question I have asked in response to some things you said to me.
If you made a response to things I said to you then THAT would be a debate. You made no response to what I said but instead asked questions. That’s not a “debate.”
You promised you would get to the rest when you have time.
I will - as I have time.
Ill be here waithing.
To refute.

But then it could be that you choose not to believe that God has the power through Christ to save completely those who turn from unbelief to belief in Him (repentance). That there is such a thing as “saving faith”
Hebrews 2:1-3

**1For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it.
2For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty,
3how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? **

Hebrews 12:25

**25 See to it that you do not refuse Him who is speaking For if those did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape who turn away from Him who warns from heaven. **

Note that in both verses, Apophasis, the inspired author includes himself (i.e. we). These warnings make no sense if there was no possibilty of danger.

1 Timothy 3:6

6and not a new convert, so that he will not become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil.

Note that his fall into condemnation is due to the fact that he becomes conceited after he received a position of leadership. If he never escaped condemnation to begin with, then he can’t “fall into” something he is already in.

God bless,
Michael

allforhim,
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not arguing your points. I’m just confused. And you’d think since I didn’t grow up Catholic I’d get it, but I don’t.
So, when an otherwise faithful Christian sins they are still saved or has salvation…meaning they get to go to heaven anyway? Or just some sins damn them?
I tend to explain the Catholic faith on such issues like this: we don’t know since the scriptures SEEM at times to say different things, so we do many things just in case! I’d hate to go before God and he say…sorry dear, you were wrong. You did need confession and you weren’t saved simply through baptism, or you weren’t saved simply because you believed in me! That is how I used to live…as though I got to go to heaven as long as I hadn’t killed anyone or done something truly horrible. But now I live my life with the idea of “Just in case!”
I’m just curious: to you: Does everyone go to heaven if they believe in God and the teachings of Christ?
Thanks!

Hi,
WOW you must have read something I said like 20 something pages ago.😃 I havent responded on this thread–just reading, but since you addressed me I will answer you.👍
I am going to put the verses down that I believe to be an answer to your question. I personally do not know who is saved and who isnt. I just know that I am based on what these verses tell me. If other people believe in what these verses say are truth then I would venture to say they are saved as well, but keep in mind I do not know their hearts only my own.👍 😃

Odell:
question 2
(Heb 3:12-14) “We have become partners of Christ (Saved) if only we hold the beginning of the reality firm until the end.” Why do we have to hold it firm? We are saved.

#2 what does it mean to be a partner of Christ? I interprit being a partner with Christ as being saved. But the verse says only if you hold it firm until the end. Do you hold firm your partnerhood till the end.
The writer of Hebrews is writing to a general audience of fellow Jews. Some amongst them who are riding the fence and have not yet committed fully to faith in Christ alone but want to revert back to the Law. And so he warns them in verse 12:"Take care, brethren, lest there should be in any one of you an unbelieving heart, in falling away from the living God."Here he is targeting those who are yet in unbelief and therefore, as Jews, fall away from the living God, the God of their fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He goes on to give the example of those Jews in the wilderness who never entered the promised land because of UNBELIEF (see 3:19) And he warns those fence sitters amongst them:Heb 4:1-3 "Therefore, let us fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have come short of it. For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also; but the word they heard did not profit them, because it was not united by faith in those who heard. For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said, “As I swore in my wrath, they shall not enter my rest,” although His works were finished from the foundation of the world."Through faith in Christ alone one enters God’s rest - because when it comes to salvation and the requirements for it, Christ Himself could not have said it more beautifully on the cross which procured it: "it is finished"Heb. 4:10 “For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.”

Heb. 3:14 is stating that it is not the fence sitters that become “partakers of Christ” but those who have a true, committed, personal faith in Him.

As a general application, anyone can call themselves “Christian.” Anyone can be baptized. But only those who truly believe the gospel message of salvation through Christ alone enter “His rest,” and “rest” from their own works.

A Jew born under the Law would certainly have understood what the writer of Hebrews was saying (Luther born under a powerful religion of works did also). But there were some among them that still refused to enter by faith alone.

There are many who call themselves “Christian” that do the same. In unbelief, they insist on clinging to their own works - which Paul, when writing to Gentiles, calls “a different gospel” (Gal. 1:6).

How can we “Secure our Salvation” when nothing unclean (sin) can enter heaven? What if I commit a mortal sin and then suddenly die without having the time to confess this sin? Is my Salvation still secure?
Your salvation is secure ONLY if you have believed and confessed that ONLY Jesus is your Lord and Savior. If you have been ‘born’ again of the Spirit (Joh3:3), and believed in Him (John3:15) alone have the assurance of eternal life.

To God be the glory…

When a child is born into this world it is fully human. Its experiences unto adulthood do not make it more human.
It’s time to be clear Apo. I’ve raised an issue regarding your understanding of eternal life, and rather than directly defending your position through reason and/or Scripture, you have done two things:
Initially you accused me of rationalizing and distorting the definition of eternal life. I respectfully asked for further clarification and you have now subsequently provided me with a limited, ambiguous analogy without explaining its relevance to the topic. Please help me out here in understanding how you arrived at your understanding of eternal life as being an all or nothing experience.
With respect to your conclusion that an infant is “fully human” I would agree and disagree. I would agree with you that it has all the dignity of any human life, and its nature is fully human - body and soul. I extend this fullness of dignity all the way back to the moment of cenception, which apparently you do not choose to do. Perhaps your analogy would start falling apart if we stretched our minds to say that a human embryo is “fully human” - . It is certainly as human as it can be, but it is not “fully human” in the sense that it cannot, for example, procreate. Part of the fullness of the uniquely human experience is that human love is expressed through new life in the image of our Creator. Infants lack this - and other traits - and in this sense cannot be thought of as “fully human”. The infant, then, has become human, is becoming human, and hopes to be fully human. So your analogy doesnt fully explain your position of insisting that eternal life is an instanteous, complete and permanent event.

Trent, sess. VI, On Justification:

For faith, unless hope and charity be added thereto, neither unites man perfectly with Christ, nor makes him a living member of His body. For which reason it is most truly said, that Faith without works is dead and profitless; and, In Christ Jesus neither circumcision, availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but faith which worketh by charity. (Chapter VII)

Having, therefore, been thus justified, and made the friends and domestics of God, advancing from virtue to virtue, they are renewed, as the Apostle says, day by day; that is, by mortifying the members of their own flesh, and by presenting them as instruments of justice unto sanctification, they, through the observance of the commandments of God and of the Church, faith co-operating with good works, increase in that justice which they have received through the grace of Christ, and are still further justified, as it is written; “He that is just, let him be justified still”; and again, “Be not afraid to be justified even to death”; and also, “Do you see that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only”. And this increase of justification holy Church begs, when she prays, “Give unto us, O Lord, increase of faith, hope, and charity.” (Chapter X)
May the Lord God open the eyes of all His sheep and may His will be done!!

Lord, show us the way. Guide us and direct us and may your glory be known among all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues. Help us to go and to tell of the great gospel of Jesus Christ - the gospel of grace. And may many come and fall on the rock of Christ and be broken in repentant faith in Christ as Lord and Savior…perceiving Him as the pearl of great price! This is my prayer and I will go and tell as many as I can - Repent and believe the gospel!
Amen!!

YOU asked me to answer your questions. I cannot do that if you can’t wait to refute my answers. Why did you ask them in the first place?
sorry apo jsut dont want to wait until next month. with all sincerity
not being sarcastic.
Actually, I wasn’t even intereted in that one but because you persisted I decided to graciously fulfill your request. But I don’t like your attitude, nevertheless, I’ll answer them, one at a time and as my time allows
sorry if I have offended you. I am trying to be as charitable as possible though. Keep me in line and Ill know if I have strayed to far.
Actually you don’t “ask” you refute
If im not mistaken I included the question mark at the end of my sentance. Never the less your going to get refuted sooner or later you should expect that. But Im waithing for something that is not so easy to refute.

I mean really if my questions are easly refutable “as they should be.” You would have already answered them all.
Are you asking the questions to hear my answers or to act as judge? No, you asked me to answer YOUR questions. They’re YOUR questions, not mine.If you made a response to things I said to you then THAT would be a debate. You made no response to what I said but instead asked questions. That’s not a "debate."I will - as I have time.To refute.
a response could very well be in a question form. Have you not asked any questons?

I would really like to get back into this debate but im waiting on you.

hey link since im waitin on apo ill ask you this since you seem to agree with him.

Heb. 3:14 is stating that it is not the fence sitters that become “partakers of Christ” but those who have a true, committed, personal faith in Him.
I agree you agree.

lets see what the verse says again.

(Heb 3:12-14) “We have become PARTNERS of Christ (Saved) if only WE hold the beginning of the REALITY firm until the end.”

We me and you could very well say we are partners of christ right?
well we could also say that WE me and you need to hold that reality firm until the end.

So you agree that we should hold this reality of our partnership in Christ till the end. Our true committed, personal faith in Him as some like to put it. we must hold on to it, that reality. If we dont we dont have a true committed personal faith in Him any more because we did not hold on to it until the end. OSAS:shrug:

I want you to notice Its not in question form. And its not really refuting either because it seems to me you have the whole Catholic perspective of this passage down.

Unless this Reality that we should hold firm till the end is not our partnership. But your going to have to do alot of convincing to prove that one

Please help me out here in understanding how you arrived at your understanding of eternal life as being an all or nothing experience.
I never said eternal life is an “experience.” Nor does the Bible. This being the root of your error and confusion.John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

John 3:36 “He who believes in the Son has eternal life”

John 5:24 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

John 6:47 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life.

1 John 5:13 “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.”

1 John 5:11 "And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son."Eternal life is not a subjective experience but a possession of all true believers now in Christ, known and understood by divine revelation. Like justification which is divinely “reckoned.”
With respect to your conclusion that an infant is “fully human” I would agree and disagree. I would agree with you that it has all the dignity of any human life, and its nature is fully human - body and soul. I extend this fullness of dignity all the way back to the moment of cenception, which apparently you do not choose to do.
I wasn’t debating abortion, Phil. Now you’re just trying to unjustly slam me. That’s poor character.
So your analogy doesnt fully explain your position of insisting that eternal life is an instanteous, complete and permanent event.
My analogy was fine based on the fact that eternal life is not a subjective experience (an on going event) but a full possession of a believer now in Christ (in Whom this life is) as the Scriptures reveal. Eternal life is a quality, not a quantity. That quality being “eternal.” It cannot become experientially more or less eternal. I’ll repeat what I wrote in a previous post regarding 1 Jn. 5:9-13:"The testimony of God is that we who are of “saving faith” are in His Son in whom is this life. And this life is as eternal (everlasting) as the resurrected Son Himself. The true believer can no more lose this life he has being now in the resurrected Christ than the resurrected Christ Himself can die again and return to the grave. It’s as simple as this, Phil:1 John 5:12 "He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.
Eternal life is a full possession of the one who has the Son. The question is not do you have (possess) eternal life, but do you have the Son? The former is then automatically answered. As Paul wrote to the believers in Corinth:2 Cor. 5:17 “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, {he is} a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”

sorry apo jsut dont want to wait until next month. with all sincerity not being sarcastic.
I am very busy Odell. I’ll answer your questions as I have time. What you won’t get from me is a flippant answer. And I’ll expect you to think about them, not just give a typical flippant reply.
But Im waithing for something that is not so easy to refute.
Anything is easy to refute when no thought is exercised.
I mean really if my questions are easly refutable “as they should be.” You would have already answered them all.
Depends on what kind of answer you demand and the true motive behind your questions.
I would really like to get back into this debate but im waiting on you.
You can get back into your game of debating. However, I’ll answer your questions in my time.

You’re great with John, but what about the other authors of Scripture? Back in #342 I posted links to two sets of Scripture passages on “eternal life” and “inheritence”. I would point to passages such as Ephesians 1:13-14, 1 Peter 1:3-4, Romans 6:21-22, and Titus 3:7. They’re all included in the link I provided.

And yet all of these verses still stand:

Galatians 6:7-9

8For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
9Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.

John 8:51

Let me just throw in John 5:28-29

28"Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice,
29and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment
.

1 Timothy 6:18-19

**18Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share,
19storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed. **

How did I miss THAT one? I’ll need to add that to my list… That sounds so unlike John, though!

That one too.

Thanks Mike!

“If you do not forgive the trespasses of others, neither will your Father in Heaven forgive you yours” J Christ Answer- you can’t call yourself Christ followers if you do not forgive others. God the Father will ALWAYS forgive your sins.

Is forgiving others part of what it means to have “faith alone” in Christ? Yes or No please.
Answer- Neither… If you have faith in Christ alone, you will follow His commandments.

Do you know that others have stopped trespassing against you? Yes or No please **Answer- It does not matter for my salvation. It should matter to him who does not forgive. **

Are you not bound to forgive them throughout the remainder of your life? Yes or No please Answer- Of course Yes

If you willingly choose to condemn those who have trespassed against you and persist in doing so until death, will your Father in heaven forgive you your sins anyhow? Answer- Again, how can you call yourself Christian if you don’t forgive others? Again, God the Father will always give His forgiveness untill you repent.
