my point was they were Christians who did the killing right? In fact not only were they slaughtering Jews and Muslims, but even Protestants. Of course it wasn’t the CC itself but the Catholic monarchy of Spain (I’m not a student of the inquisition, but I wonder what the official church response was?).
Yes, the King and Queen were Christian, however, the Inquisition was more than likely necessary (the torture and killing wasn’t), in order to ascertain the loyalty of certain members known as conversos (people who converted to Christianity of Jewish and Moorish blood but only did so it was believed to infiltrate the court hierarchy). Remember the King and Queen had just won the whole Iberian peninsula from Moorish control (they had no choice to fight the Moors). Also, the bit about Protestants being slaughtered is incorrect. As for the Church’s stance, initially a bull was issued to allow an inquiry, but once the torture began the Church had changed its mind to support the Inquisition.
Here is an exerpt by Robert Lockwood’s article in Secrets of the Spanish Inquisition Revealed:
“But even at this early point in the history of the Spanish Inquisition, the papacy was having second thoughts. Pope Sixtus IV (1471-1484) complained about the activities of the inquisition in Aragon and its treatment of the conversos. But, as throughout much of Europe, the papacy had lost much control over the actions of local inquisitions. Pope Innocent VIII (1484-1492) complained fruitlessly as well. The inquisition in Spain was controlled by Spanish authorities, not the authority of the papacy.”
I do agree Hitler overall was an atheist … although he made some comments that shed some doubt on his religious views (he tended to refer to divine providence quite a bit for some reason). At any rate Hitler cannot fairly be called a Christian in any sense.
Well, it all began . . . actually every prayer I have prayed has been answered even the most insignificant ones, but the most important prayer he answered was given to me last year when I survived a deadly disease. I was on the verge of dying, and there was not much the doctors could do, I had a bacteria (same strain as the flesh eating bacteria) that got into the space between my lung and my veil, it became so severe that both my lungs were infected (it turned into pus) and got into my blood stream. By the time I got to the hospital my right lung had collapsed (I literally felt my life slipping away). I was operated on quickly but to no avail, I was on a respirator and in an induced coma. My parents were away on vacation. When they arrived they were told “that she is more there than here” My family (lots since I am of Italian background) held prayer vigils (rosary), my priest also came to give me my last rites, I survived due to my faith and the faith of others. I can not tell you how the sight of the crucifix on the wall in my hospital room kept me going. I was sick from the very beginning of lent and released a day before Easter. I was told I am an Easter miracle. My doctors have never seen a case like mine before, (apparently I hit the jackpot), but I was strong because of Jesus because of what he went through for me.
