If you really believed that last sentence, you would be a universalist. Clearly you think that one must believe in Jesus to be saved–that’s a pretty big string. Why is it then disturbing to say that to believe in Jesus we must be part of His body and must be open to all the truth He revealed? You seem disturbed by both the openness and the exclusiveness of Catholicism, whereas to me they seem to have a nice balance between the two. Exclusivist evangelicalism, on the other hand, wants to have its cake and eat it too. You want to damn to hell all the non-Christians but have no “strings” for what it means to be a Christian beyond those you personally see fit to select from the richness of Christian tradition.Rinnie, it’s the “must come to the understanding” that I find disturbing, and the Pope’s statement about salvation speaks for itself, doesn’t it? Salvation is found in Jesus Christ alone. It’s a free gift - no strings attached.
