I am very happy to hear that Priests cannot forgive sins. I was under the impression that it was believed they could, which was very disturbing to me. I’ve been seeing what looked like to me, an attempt to make the Word fit the religion, forcing the Bible to say what it doesn’t say. Thank you for clearing that one up! (((Rinnie)))

I love these moments where scripture comes together in an “ah ha” kind of way. When you were speaking of Grace like a fence, I thought of Romans 5 and 6 “where sin abounds, Grace abounds much more” or something like that. Then “should we continue sinning knowing that Grace will abound? God forbid!”

This is the scripture that uses the analogy of a seed, that when Christ died, we died. When He was buried, we were buried. When He arose from the dead, we arose from that old sin nature to a new life. Grace naturally abounds because I am a new creature in Christ, and for this reason only. Not because of confession of sins. It was ONLY the work of the Cross.

So it seems where we differ is that you are saying you have to do something to get His Grace, and I’m saying Jesus did it for me and I can back my opinion with scripture. (Romans 5 and 6)

Tell me if I’m way off base here because I’m only thinking, not judging. It seems to me that this (confession to a Priest) is a kind of bondage when we are already set free in Christ. And second, I’m not seeing how a deep relationship can be achieved with your Creator if you don’t go to Him first. When DO you go to Him?
Okay first of all I never said we had to do something to receive Grace. We both agree it is a free gift from God. I said and I will repeat we can LOSE grace. Fall from grace as they say. Here is the thing, You can answer it for me maybe, how can a person sin against God and not fall from Grace? Do you see what I am saying. Now sure you are correct if we do not sin, we are good to go. But do you know anyone who does not sin? So lets kinda make this easy then I will explain, Lets start with how can we sin against God, and still get into heaven, What does the bible say we must do. Does the bible say don’t worry about that sin, or does it say we must do something. Think about what I am asking. Does Jesus or does he not say we must DO something if we sin. One other question, and take your time, Where does Jesus say that by his death on the cross he has paid for ours sins and then say so sin all you want. OR does scripture say by his death he has paid for our sins, but sin no more?

According to the Bible, and check for yourself, Jesus, the second person of the triune God was with the first person of the triune God (the Father), in the beginning (Genesis ch.1 vs.1). Referring to Jesus, the writer of the New Testament book of Hebrews states “You Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands” Hebrews 1:10

But according to rinnie, the third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit of God, did not meet up with the second person of the triune God until Approx. the year 4 BC. In addition, the second person of the triune God, He who created the heavens and earth (according to the Bible) did not have power over His creation until about 2000 years ago, according to rinnie.
Jon, I do not know where you are comming from. God is God. He revealed himself through the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. But how does when and how he revealed himself matter. ITs still to the point God is God and always has been. He is the Father, he is the Son and he is the Holy Spirit. One Person in three separate beings. I do not see your point here at all. Just because GOD choose to become man through Jesus Christ he was still God. God made himself human and was still divine. I do not see your point. Just becasue God choose to reveal himself through the Holy Spirit he is still God. Just becasue he choose to reveal himself through the Father he is still God.

What are you trying to say that God is not the 3 Persons in one being or what. You lost me here?

Actually what we should do as Catholics is inform the Protestants that Martin Luther was praying the rosary at his death. Luther was very "Catholic’ when he died. Many things he posted on the church were changed and he should get credit for it. He should not get credit for Lutheranism he didn’t institute. If Lutherans went back to the original Lutheranism they would see how Catholic Luther was.
The source for this commentary?

You are right OTCA and I am hoping they are not just twisting my words around. So let me be more clear. A priest has the Power to forgive sins, we both agree on that. What I was explaining is that they do not have the power to forgive sins on their own.

Let me put it this way, I cannot forgive your sin and you cannot forgive mine, we both know because we do not have Holy Orders. But when the Priest receives Holy Orders he is given that power from above. But what I am trying to explain to them the priest never works on his own power, its God power to forgive, given from above. What I was trying to explain to them is when I said the Priest does not have the power to forgive sins, I meant on his own, his is just standing in for God, But it is God doing the forgiving not the Priest. Again, you and I understand he does indeed have the power from Holy Orders but it is only the Power God has given him. It is not a power of his own that he is doing this.

I can see alot of word twisting here. Hope that cleared it up.
Hi Rinnie, I just quoted always gr8ful’s post about it. But thank you for clearing it up. God Bless you, you are a good apologist and a devout Catholic.👍

I can see alot of word twisting here. Hope that cleared it up.
Rinnie, you and I were in understanding - a priest cannot forgive sins on his own. I should have been clearer, taking into account that others may be reading. 😊

Rinnie, thanks for giving me time to answer this. I do have errands to run this afternoon and a question as important as this needs a thorough answer.

Take your time love, I work at home, and will not get a break again myself until around 6 and then want to hit Stations at 6:30. So it may take me a day or too also to get back. Take your time though, we are on no schedule. We all have very very busy lives. Too busy at times, but hey its keeps us out of trouble!😃

Okay first of all I never said we had to do something to receive Grace. We both agree it is a free gift from God. I said and I will repeat we can LOSE grace. Fall from grace as they say.
Who says? Show me in God’s Word where it says we can fall from Grace.
Here is the thing, You can answer it for me maybe, how can a person sin against God and not fall from Grace?
If you had read what I posted already, you would have seen God’s answer to this question - not MY answer. Here it is again:

“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we[a]have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.” (Romans 5:1)

“For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:17)

“The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 5:20)

"What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with,[a] that we should no longer be slaves to sin— because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God." (Romans 6:1-10
Do you see what I am saying. Now sure you are correct if we do not sin, we are good to go.
I didn’t say that. Do you only count big sins as sin? Did you make it through the day without expounding on the truth a bit? Were you impatient with the lady at the checkout counter? Did you not have time for a stranger? Was every waking thought totally pure and clean? Until you come to an understanding that ALL sin is sin, you will never grasp what Jesus did for YOU, Rinnie. His death and resurrection.
But do you know anyone who does not sin? So lets kinda make this easy then I will explain, Lets start with how can we sin against God, and still get into heaven, What does the bible say we must do.(?)
Believe on the One Who washed our sins away.
Does the bible say don’t worry about that sin, or does it say we must do something. Think about what I am asking. Does Jesus or does he not say we must DO something if we sin.
This is the question of someone still living under the law. Oh, you may not be Jewish, but you are still in bondage. You have yet to accept the perfect and complete work of our Lord’s death and resurrection, and you are trying to buy or work your way into Heaven. Or, are you prepared to pluck your eye out if it offends you?

(Romans 8:1) “There is therefore now no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus”
We are sinless in the eyes of God the Father through Christ. So what are you doing? Spitting on His perfect gift? Saying “it’s not perfect - I have to DO something”, putting your dirty hands on what is already finished? I apologize for being blunt, but if I feel this way, imagine how Christ feels.
One other question, and take your time, Where does Jesus say that by his death on the cross he has paid for ours sins and then say so sin all you want. OR does scripture say by his death he has paid for our sins, but sin no more?
Again, I would like to hear your definition of sin. I got a bit angry writing this because I think you won’t listen. Now, God might call that “righteous anger” or He might not and it would be sin. I am 51 years old and growing in the Lord daily, but I can’t get through a day without sinning having walked with Him since I was a child. And I’ll keep sinning and growing until the day I die. But Praise God! He accounts me righteous through the Blood of Jesus Christ.

"Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it…

Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."

Those last 3 paragraphs were Hebrews 4.

“For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”
~John 1:17

“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
~2 Corinthians 12:9

"Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe.

For there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus."
~Romans 3:19-26

“And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace.”
~Romans 1:6

“And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”
~2 Corinthians 9:8

“I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!”
~Galatians 2:21

“Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law. You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.”
~Galatians 5:3-6

Please meditate on the above. The only fall from Grace you will experience is when you push it away yourself, rejecting what Christ did for you by not believing it was enough.

Hi AG sorry weekends are so busy for me, and fly by.

The quickest way to do this is show you where we are crossing our signals.

First of all there are two kinds of grace. I don’t think you realize that.

Santifying Grace (thats what alot of your scripture pertains to. Let me explain

Santifying Grace stays in the soul its what makes you holy.
Actual grace is on the outside it helps us KEEP Sant. Grace.

Remember what I told you before scripture cannot fight scripture. So we must be misunderstanding it right. Lets go to John 5:16-17 Mortal sin means death of the soul. By sinning mortally you lose Grace.

Go to Cor 3:12-16 If sant. grace dwells in your soul when you die you get into heaven. If not it needs to be purified first.

If it does not dwell in you when you die you can’t get into heaven. Gal 5:19-21
That means total separation from God Eph 2:1 5, 4:18 (this shows us what we caused for ourself.)

Again how can we fall from Grace, read Luke 8:13 those who believe for a while but in tempation fall away.

Read Philippians 2:12 says WORK OUT your salvation.

You asked me am I saved. Here is how a Catholic should answer

As the bible says I am already saved Rom 8:24 Eph 2:5-8, But I am also BEING saved 1cor 1:8 2 Cor 2:15 Phil 2:12. But I have the Hope I will be saved Rom 5:9-10 1 Cor 3:12-15. Like the Apostle Paul I am working out my salvation in fear and trembling Phil 2:12 with hopeful comfidence in the promised of Christ Rom 5:2 2 Tim 2:11-13

That is why Grace is not enough. Grace without work means death. Death means moral sin of the soul, moral sin of the soul means separation from God.

Let me put it to you this way. You come to me for 200 because you can’t make your car payment. I lend you the 200. Now you have it to make your car payment, You put the money in the bank but don’t make your car payment. So they re-po your car. How can you blame me or the credit company. You had the money (grace) but you did nothing with the grace (money) so you did no works (make the payment). Grace without works is dead. See what I mean. Thats how our soul is, If we know that we have to follow Christ and do his work, but to say hey, we are saved, we got that free gift we are good to go, No, It don’t work that way. We must take that free gift lets say a garden, dig up the ground, plant vegtables, feed, and water them. and they grow and spread, Thats what our grace should do. Do you understand what I am saying? Use it or lose it!

Now go back and really read alot of that scripture you quoted me. Tell me is you see it in a different way now?

Now go back and really read alot of that scripture you quoted me. Tell me is you see it in a different way now?
Good morning, Rinnie!
Thank you for your reply. I can see how you are reading more into the scripture than is there and applying scripture to yourself that is actually speaking of the unsaved.

I think I can explain it easiest by using the analogy you used about borrowing the $200. If I borrowed that money saying I had to make a car payment, the didn’t make the payment but instead, put the money in the bank, I lied, right? The Truth was not in me. I would be like the man who heard the Word with joy, but it fell on rocky ground and never took root. Borrowing the money sounded good to me at the time, and I might have had the intention to pay the car loan at the time, but I was fickled and didn’t.

You are absolutely right - scripture cannot conflict. I may say here that I can’t judge if a man is saved or unsaved, but didn’t Jesus tell us that we would know them by their fruit? We can’t look at how wealthy someone is to determine their salvation, because some of the biggest heathens in the world are wealthy. We can’t look at their charity because some of the most charitable in Hollywood are atheist or agnostic.

But we can know them by their works, or fruit. If I’m married and in an adulterous affair that brings me joy, is the Spirit living in me? If I live to stir up strife, would you guess that I am saved or unsaved? If I profess to be a Christian, but trust card reading and the occult even after I learn that God hates it, do I have any part in Heaven? Did I ever have any part of Heaven?

We are talking about two different animals here. The line you left out in Gal. 5 made it clear - 18 “But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.” Scripture cannot conflict, and that’s why we must search the scripture and read it for it’s common sense meaning. Does it make sense to read all scripture as if it was only speaking to the saved?

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
~Gal. 5:1

When I didn’t know if you meant 1 Corinthians or 2 Corinthians 3, I read them both. There are better verses about legalism, but this one seems so appropriate:

"Such confidence as this is ours through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

The Glory of the New Covenant

"Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, fading though it was, will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? If the ministry that condemns men is glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness! For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. And if what was fading away came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!

“Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to keep the Israelites from gazing at it while the radiance was fading away. But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”
~2 Corinthians 3:4-18

So we must be misunderstanding it right. Lets go to John 5:16-17 Mortal sin means death of the soul. By sinning mortally you lose Grace.
John 5:16-17 "So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him. Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.”

Either we are in the wrong verse or chapter. If it’s the wrong verse, and you mean John 5:14-15 “Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.” - was the man who laid by the pool for healing saved? No. Salvation (Christ) was in the world, but the completed work of the Cross - His death and resurrection, had not yet occurred.

If you meant John 3:16-17, I rest my case.🙂
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”

In either verse, there is nothing of Mortal sin or losing grace, so my question stands as to where in God’s Word it says that you can lose grace.
Go to Cor 3:12-16 If sant. grace dwells in your soul when you die you get into heaven. If not it needs to be purified first.
1 Cor 3 is speaking of division in churches. Paul is saying that we are just God’s servants, planting and watering, but it’s God that makes the church (or us) grow. He says to be careful that the foundation is built on Christ, and that if anything sub-par material is used (analogy) in the building of walls and such, that will be burned up in the end, but we won’t be. Do you see what a stretch it would be to come to your conclusion about those verses, about sanctified grace?
If it does not dwell in you when you die you can’t get into heaven. Gal 5:19-21
Let me say one more thing about Gal. 5, the chapter titled “Christian Freedoms”. It ends “And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”(Gal. 5:24-25)
Being saved, our flesh is ALREADY crucified. Are you trying to do the work that Jesus has already done? Please don’t. Just walk in the Spirit.
That means total separation from God Eph 2:1 5, 4:18 (this shows us what we caused for ourself.)
Eph. 2:1-3 - before we were saved. Eph 2:4-22, now that we are saved.
Eph. 4:18-20 - the old man - the way you were before you were saved. Eph. 4:21-32 - the new man - now that you are saved.
You asked me am I saved. Here is how a Catholic should answer.
I didn’t ask you if you are saved. I am assuming as much. Praise God, I hope everyone here is saved! I WILL ask you if you believe the Bible. Do you believe God’s Word?
That is why Grace is not enough. Grace without work means death. Death means moral sin of the soul, moral sin of the soul means separation from God.
I wish you wouldn’t say that. I feel Jesus wince every time you say it. Please show me scripture that says grace is not enough. Please show me where it says that Jesus only half died for you and you have to do the rest. Show me where it says His work was not perfect and complete.

I was just Holy Spirit convicted of a sloppy word I used.
“But we can know them by their works, or fruit.” Works are not fruit either. Sorry, my bad. We are either of the Vine or not. Even heathens can have good works.

I did, I showed you that you can fall from grace. I am sorry that you don’t care to hear it, not many do. Tell me this, is we cannot fall from Grace which means sin, why did God say that we must REPENT and CONFESS our sins. Because from what you are saying, we cannot fall from Grace which means sin. Let me ask you this, do you believe that we can sin, and still be in good grace with God. See what you are saying does not makes sense to me, let me explain why. You have this idea that if you have Gods Grace you will not sin. Is that not what you said, that if we are one of Gods and we fall from Grace we were not one of Gods anyway? That makes no sense to me, Because if what you are saying if true, no one is saved because all have sinned. Tell me what is sin to you if not falling from Grace with God. Do you really think you can sin, and still be in good standing with God? Do you think someone can sin, and still be full of Grace?

I did, I showed you that you can fall from grace. I am sorry that you don’t care to hear it, not many do.
*“Don’t care to hear it”? *YOU have been saying it, and I have been asking for you to show me where in God’s Word it says you can fall from Grace, and I am still waiting. If you think you have shown me, then I respectfully ask that you show me again, because I totally missed it.

Maybe it would help if you posted the actual scripture, not just the reference, and explained it to me.

Thanks!

Always:

Hypothetically, suppose you were a Christian during the time of the Emperor Nero, and you were taken prisoner because of your faith. You are told that if you deny Christ and offer incense to Jupiter that you will be released, but if you don’t you will be used as a torch at the Emperor’s garden party tonight.

If it is not possible to fall from grace and Jesus would perfectly understand why you might prefer not to light up the Emperor’s party, would you save your life or choose a martyr’s death?
