Tract: **Why Is Mary Crying? **
Claim: Devotion to Mary doesn’t please her. It breaks her heart.
The Big Question: Is that true? Let’s find out.

I would like to admit that this tract is full of half-truths, errors, lies and many misrepresentations. I’ll not pretend to give an exhaustive critique to them all. It definitely would take a book if not books to refute all these allegations. I’m not perfect, I’ll attempt to do my best okay?

Above is a nice example of appeal to emotion. It’s interesting what Jack Chick wants to achieve by appealing to the emotions of his readers using such words as “Poor Mary. Her heart is broken…” Really?

Well, the faithful are doing what Mary herself prophesied in the Bible concerning how generations to come would honor her. See for example:

For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. (Luke 1:48 KJV emphasis mine)

The question one should sincerely ask himself/herself, “Am I also part of the generation that call Mary blessed as she said in the Scriptures?” Think about this deeply.

Karl Keating has a chapter about that tract in one of his lesser known books (The Usual Suspects?); but i can`t find it. Mary should be crying over the likes of Chick!

Unless Chick is mentally deficient in some way, id hate to be in his boots if he dies unrepentent. If hes so Bible-based, he should recall Jesus words in Matthew 7:21: Not everyone who calls to Me: "Lord! Lord!" will enter the kingdom of Heaven; but only he who does the will of My Father...... Unrepentent slanderers and hypocrites wont make it.

Well, it is enough for us to refute his propaganda with the truth and the document in my link above is a good refutation of all things Chick. Most honest people are really embarrassed if they have believed his stuff and then get the facts from that source above.

As for his eternal end…we are bound to pray for him and should never give up, so I think the Divine Mercy Chaplet is a superior weapon towards his conversion.

I also remember him in my daily prayers as a knight of Mary Immaculate (MI National Center!) when we say the version of the Miraculous Medal prayer that St. Maximilian Kolbe gave us.

Is Jack Chick still alive? I thought I read somewhere that he passed away several years ago. Anyway, Jack used to be the darling of the mainline protestant groups until someone did an investigation and exposed him as a fraud. He was then dropped like a hot potato. Still he found a willing audience in the new fundamentalist groups who seem eager to call anyone who is against the Catholic Church a brother in Christ.
 
I’m quite familiar with Catholic Answers overview of Mr. Chick’s work and also Jimmy Akin’s personal encounter with Jack.

I happen to be a friend of both Jimmy and Karl on Facebook and I have had some few chat with Karl.

I think there were some things left to answer and I’m happy to response to those ones. I shall answer all his tracts on Catholicism one-by-one.

My encounter with Chick tracts was way back in 1997/1998 when I wasn’t Catholic yet and I applied for a Bible course in USA. One of the Fundamentalist Bible courses. I was an unusual suspect to Chick’s hate gospel. I converted to Catholicism at Easter 1999. I live in Ghana, West Africa.

Jack Chick is still alive.

The fraud you refer to may be the fact that he based some of his material on the testimony of a supposed ex-Catholic priest. This person claimed among other things that there was a giant computer in the Vatican with the names of all the Protestants in the world.

A lot of Catholics enjoy his material for the humor of it, but it can cause a lot of damage, whicjh is why I wouldn’t blindly recommend that everyone read it.

If he is dead, either that is very recent, or someone else is making the tracts under his name; as 2 new ones came out last fall.

I never heard that he was “exposed as a fraud.”. He never had much of a personal story to expose. Might you be remembering his onetime sidekick Alberto Rivera (who claimed to have been a Jesuit priest, was debunked, and has in fact died some years ago?)

But when you cite Chick’s material, please make sure that you make all the proper citations required by U.S. copyright laws. It is my understanding that Chick has a legal team that is very draconian about tackling possible copyright infringements (and they may be doing this as a means of stifling rebuttals of his material).

On a different note, I looked through your blog and I really like how you utilized a point-by-point refutation of the Chick tract in question. You were very thorough and I commend you for it.

Okay, somehow I thought I heard he had passed away but I guess I was wrong. The fraud I referred to indeed involved Alberto Rivera’s claim to being an ex Jesuit priest. From what I understood he was a con man and Jack Chick got taken in by it. Apparently Mr. Rivera told Jack what Jack wanted to hear and Jack went with it without doing any investigation. Of course that does not imply that Jack would not have gone with it had he done any investigation. We don’t really know but seeing some of the other stuff Chick put out I tend to doubt he would have held it back. In any event an investigation was begun by some protestant group who was concerned that the allegations were becoming just too incredulous. As a result Rivera was revealed for what he really was, Chick was discredited and a lot of protestant groups had to do some fast back tracking.
 
He’s definitely still around: there’s a new tract out for the Halloween season.

I find his stuff amusing, and it’s a shame the graphical talent isn’t used to serve the Church rather than to fight against it. Oh well…ICXC NIKA

And a lot of protestant/anti-Catholic groups DIDN`T do any back-tracking! :mad:

“Christianity Today” was one of at least two non-Catholic publications that exposed Rivera. Ditto for John Todd, Chicks other "authority". Unless Chick suffers some mental illness, no one is going to convince me that he was fooled by those two frauds. As you say, he was told what he wanted to hear, no matter how outrageous. Anyway, both Rivera and Todd are in the Next Life. Riveras body was buried in an unmarked grave so that the Jesuits couldn`t desecrate it.
Todd died in the psychiatric wing of a prison Hospital.

Mr Alamo isn`t getting any younger, either; but at least he has 170+ years to reconsider his views. 😃

Please can you give me the proper citation procedure as required by the US? I might be probably ignorant of these law I think. I’ll be happy to see how you’ll like this done so I could attach it to the page and also my future response to his other works. God bless.
