Event explores topic of women as ordained Catholic priests

To parishioners in her small Sacramento congregation, Elizabeth English is their Catholic priest: She presides over their Sunday Mass, leads them during Communion and baptizes their babies.

To the Roman Catholic Church, English symbolizes a topic that church leaders consider closed: the ordination of women priests.

English left the Roman Catholic Church five years ago to pursue her calling to the priesthood. She is now a priest in the Independent Catholic Church, a group not recognized by the Vatican. She is the only female Catholic priest in the Sacramento region.

“I had to leave the church; there was no place for me,” she said. “I wish there was.”

Last week, English joined a Nobel Peace Prize nominee who is also a priest and about 150 others at St. Mark’s Methodist Church in Sacramento to discuss the ordination of women priests.

Sad to see people unable to obey God and His Church, who celebrate their own willfulness and declare it a ‘calling from on high.’ Also sad to see that there are bishops and priests who buy into this willful disobedience, and who are too cowardly to stand up and practice this disobedience in public because they know that if they did then they’d have to get a real job somewhere.

IMO the reason the Church doesn’t want women as priests is because eventually you would have few men as priests. Compare the number of women versus men in these positions: Eucharistic ministers and religious education teachers. If your parish is like mine women dominate. Look at people at Sunday Mass. If you look at people there by themselves I’d say women outnumber men 2 to 1.

If your pastor wasn’t male then men would see the Church as a mostly female entity.

Even where female altar servers are allowed they tend to dominate. I’ve been to masses where all of the altar servers are female.

I guess they don’t notice how nonsensical the name of their “church” is: Independent Catholic Church. The word Catholic means universal. You can’t have an independent, universal church.

No, the reason the Church doesn’t have women priests has nothing to do with what the Church wants or doesn’t want. Their hands are tied in this issue, as it was Jesus who set the rules, not the Church. Those who want the ordination of women have to petition Jesus, not the Church. They have to hold their publicity stunts before heaven, not before the newspapers. They have the impossibly contradictory and illogical task of convincing God that He made a mistake.

While your statistics may be accurate I don’t think that that’s the Church’s reason. Check the CCC. My heart grieves for these women who see priesthood as a power to achieve rather than the servanthood it’s supposed to be.

Sad to see poeple who describe themselves first and foremost as a ‘lesbian’ and lastly as a child of God.

She states there was no place for her but fails to mention that priest or bishop were the only places she found suitable.

What a joke…and she and her “so called parishioners” really think she is a priest and can confer valid sacraments…What a shame. Independent Catholic Church…I know what it is independent of…GOD

A woman can no more be a priest than a rutabaga can be the Body of Christ. Invalid matter makes the sacrament impossible. That is why the Church can not* ever* have women priest. It is not a question of desire or will, but of objective reality.

Bourgeois, a 2010 Nobel Peace Prize nominee, **faces excommunication **for attending a woman’s priestly ordination. In his speech, Bourgeois said “the sin of sexism” is at the core of the issue. He said many women are already doing the jobs of priests – from offering Communion to anointing the sick.
Wasn’t his excommunication already confirmed?

And while women can be EMHCs, only a priest (or Bishop) can annoint the sick, right?

Excellent point.

I think that women who mistakenly believe that they want to be Catholic priests need to read this document:

vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/apost_letters/documents/hf_jp-ii_apl_22051994_ordinatio-sacerdotalis_en.html

God bless.

I agree that women should not be priests, or Eucharistic ministers, or altar servers, or fill any role in the Catholic church other than submissive to Christ.

We were brought up that sex is dirty and females are too dirty to handle the body of Christ or perform sacraments. St Paul wrote that women are not equal to men in any way. They are to be as slaves to their masters. St Paul told women to remain silent in church.

I don’t think priests should be allowed to marry or be sexual either though. I read that in the early days of the church, the men were somehow taught that they didn’t need sex to be powerful.

If this so-called woman priest is also a lesbian, well, there’s the problem. She needs to be taken out behind the woodshed!

Please join us all after this ‘event’ for other topics including:

“Men who have birthed children”.

“Beyond bread and wine–why beer and pizza are the coming trend for Eucharist confection”.

“Why the Trinity is passe–we know God is not ‘three’, rather, he is ME --why God does not exist ‘outside’ each individual.”

"Post Christian world requires post-Christian thinking --why terms like ‘one’ are to be jettisoned for inclusion’s sake. We do not believe in such a thing as “one” Church (which would ‘exclude’ others’) --we believe in a pantheon of ‘all’ churches and people/animals/energy points, and celebrate diversity rather than require a rigid and medieval adherence to ‘one’ way. Many paths, equally valid, lead to the ‘experience of transcentalism’ beyond the beyond’. Join us for navel gazing diversity which will explore everything BUT Christian teaching and celebrate IT as ‘truth’.

Yawn. . . . .

Very good point.

The view of our modern world is that we must have no barriers so we can achieve whatever we want. If there be a barrier…it is therefore unjust and must be removed.

Obedience is not a virtue of these women…who by rejecting Holy Mother Church, they reject Christ our God.

I agree that women should not be priests, or Eucharistic ministers, or altar servers, or fill any role in the Catholic church other than submissive to Christ. If you’re ‘serious’ here, you’re comparing apples and oranges plus you’re acting as if ONLY women are to be subservient, and as if submission is wrong to boot.

We were brought up that sex is dirty no, WE weren’t. You might have been. I’m a woman, I’m 53, and I wasn’t. What Catholic Church did YOU attend? and females are too dirty to handle the body of Christ or perform sacraments. Your Church or teachers must have been very confused if they taught you this. St Paul wrote that women are not equal to men in any way. They are to be as slaves to their masters. St Paul told women to remain silent in church. Then how did you miss St. Paul’s teaching that husbands were to love their wives, not 'lord it over them?" Gosh, I’m sorry for you. You had terrible teachers who never taught you the truth!

I don’t think priests should be allowed to marry or be sexual either though. I read that in the early days of the church, the men were somehow taught that they didn’t need sex to be powerful. Since priests are celibate (that means no sex) I don’t get where you’re going with this. . . Care to enlighten us?

If this so-called woman priest is also a lesbian, well, there’s the problem. She needs to be taken out behind the woodshed!
Catholic teaching is hate the sin, love the sinner. . .again, care to enlighten us as to why you’d advocate corporal punishment? The Church certainly doesn’t. . .

What does “Invalid matter” mean?

I agree with you, but then there are many times when I feel I am just nothing but a rutabaga. It’s not a good state of mind, though. In fact, it feels awful, and it happened three times during mass.

Does God love men and despise women? Our sixth grade teacher said this a lot and I have wondered about it ever since. It is scary. Almost too scary to think about.

I noticed you are a big-shot forum person, so I hope you can answer this-- the invalid matter part, anyway.
