Honestly, I haven’t really kept up lately but last time I checked, (correct me if I’m wrong) a certain Fr. O’Brian seemed to live to second guess Rome and provided ample sound bites for the secular media.

I’m a theology major at the esteemed University of Notre Dame.

)And yes, the department could use some help. Personally, I avoid the heterodox profs, but I know many un-knowing undergrads don’t. And that frightens me. But I figure change, in this case, has to come from within. So here I am.
We really do have some fantastic faculty members who are excellent orthodox scholars. Father McBrien, thankfully doesn’t teach, but apparently prefers to spend his time providing the aforementioned sound bytes, plagiarizing, or releasing new editions of his book. I have many very orthodox friends here who have been successful in finding good profs here who really care about the university’s Catholic mission and identity.
I know McBrien does/has done a lot of damage, as have several other faculty members, but I think that our new president, Fr. Jenkins, has good intentions, and is trying to move us in the right direction, especially with regard to Catholic hiring. Also, Jenkins is fully behind a Catholic Hiring Project going on at ND, which attemps to find good Catholic profs at other universities and draw them here, and also attempts to persuade quality ND undergrads to pursue careers in academia. (I know I’m a target, lol! They won’t leave me alone about the grad school thing!) The campus newspaper, The Observer, ran a 3-part series on it, which you can find here, here, and here. The Irish Rover, the independent, conservative, Catholic paper serving ND had a better article on the Catholic Hiring Project last year, but the Rover’s site is under construction so the text is not available online.
He gave a faculty address earlier this year in which he discusses his vision for ND’s future:
I posted this on another thread, but Project Sycamore was recently begun by concerned alums about the issue of ND’s Catholic identity.

I think this is a spectacularly, wildly, resoundingly, DUMB idea. This won’t melt their hearts; it’ll just confirm them in their opinion of the stupidity and decadence of the rest of us.
A much better idea would be for a squadron of Rosary-praying parishioners to go out and picket them.

We’ve never had this group at my church, but we had some “abortion rights” types once. The land our church is on, and our parking lot are all private property, and these protestors were told they couldn’t stand/park there – it would be trespassing. They ended up standing on the city sidewalk, which is fair game, but it’s not close to any of the church entrances.
I do like that idea! Pray that Rosary loudly!

My freshman year at the University of Wyoming was the year after Matt Shepard was killed. Phelps & Co. came to Laramie that year to “celebrate Matt Shepard’s one-year anniversary in hell.” The campus LBGT group counter-protested by dressing as angels and standing in front of Phelps & Co. so no one could see their hate propaganda.
I went to Phelps’ website once and it was just awful. He has an FAQ, and one of the questions is, “It’s against the Bible to hate!” His WHOLE justification for why he can hate is this: “The Bible says ‘Jacob I have loved; Esau I have hated.’ See, if God hates, that means I can hate too!”
He is really a mentally ill individual. I just hope God is more merciful to him than he is to others.

Just to let you know, Sunday was pretty much a non-event. To be honest with you, I found it all to be more sad than anything. The protest at our church consisted of nothing more than three people (at least one as a little kid) holding up the usual signs you see. I found the, “Don’t Worship the Dead” sign to be a little humorous. I thought, “Now that’s a sign I can agree with”. It also proves just how ignorant these people are about what Catholics really believe. The ELCA church across the street went ahead a tried to give them breakfast, and of course they refused it.
Also, when they protested the “Laramie Project” at the high school in Saturday, someone did run up and punch one of them, so it looks like they will get that lawsuit they were seeking so much.

They were here to protest a fallen soldiers funeral at the base Chapel. Luck for us, the “Patriot Guard Riders” showed up and blocked thier demonstration. Here is the web site for the PGR’s. Here is what our pastor had to say to us about WBC:
They hate Matthew Shephard the same way they hate all homosexuals. He was a gay college student in Wyoming who was beaten to death in 1998 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Shepard. The “Laramie Project” is a play based on interviews with those when knew him. The WBC claims that he was not beaten to death because he was gay but because it was a drug deal gone bad, and now gays are using his death to force their agenda. If you ask me, it’s wrong to use anyone’s death just to push an agenda or justify hate no matter what side you’re on.
