I don’t see myself leaving CA, but I’m just losing interest in debating/arguing the same topics over and over.

I suppose others get tired of it too, as some of the regulars are seldom seen posting here lately.

Is it like everything else, you just get tired or need a break ?
I know I have. Specially when Catholics come against one another. Peace.

I may be guilty of posting topics that have been discussed before but mainly because I find the search function doesn’t really work very well. Perhaps because I just don’t know the ‘words’ to use when searching for specific topics. 🤷

I don’t really see any of the topics on this site as debates. I’ve seen lots of arguments but nothing I would call a ‘debate’.

Anyway, I guess it just depends what threads you’re looking at. As someone who is searching for answers I only read threads that may or may not cover a topic I’m interested in and have not yet found an answer for.

There are also subjects that are really opinions of posters. You can go round and round and never arrive at a consensus. That gets old, because you know that it’s just opinions. I usually sit there and ask myself, “Why am I even bothering arguing against someone’s opinion?” It’s at that point of realization that I often decide to bail out.

You can’t change someone’s opinion when they are in opposition mode. The best place to discuss opinions is in a schoolroom or over a cup of coffee where the environment is less hostile.

I heard it may be easy to talk to others about the faith, and even get them to understand. But when a Catholic corrects noather Catholic…uh-uh. Ain’t happening. It’s harder to convine our own than it is to convince those outside of Faith.

How sad. 🤷
Have to tried telling Evangelicals many of their interpretations are wrong? Or telling the Orthodox that unity with the Pope is important?

In any case, in any thing, its hard to convince someone else of anything that is in opposition to what they believe in. I’ve had many people online hate me so much because I don’t think their favorite basketball player is the best basketball player in the NBA. I mean, they take it so personally that you can see the way they would attack me and track me through the forum (not CAF) just to pick a fight with me really says how much personally they took it. What more when you’re debating someone’s faith. Although some people do treat their sports heroes as gods, thus the term “idol”.

I came to the CA Forums to continue to learn more about my faith, a precious gift I received at infant Baptism, then threw away in my late teens and recovered through no action on my part, thanks be to God. The thought of ever losing my way again keeps me wanting to grow and learn more, receive the sacraments regularly, especially Penance and the Holy Eucharist. Discovering how easily one can drift away and now unraveling what exactly led me astray, I am compelled to learn and share the gift of faith with as many people as cross my path in daily life, not through my efforts but in God’s infinite wisdom - He is my director. Those who come to CAF are here for His reasons, to be sure. Even those who imagine they are coming here to convert us; or some to vent their own anger and mistrust cannot ‘un-read’ the beautiful witnesses to our faith or forget what they see here. Those who give so much of their time and effort to instruct and advise are continually showered with God’s grace to do so. As Jesus was disrespected in His own hometown, so it will be for us at times. Don’t ever give up in your efforts to bring the good news to others or to show them God’s mercy and kindness (I know this can be extremely difficult but thank you for keeping on with His work. :blessyou:

Yes and there are a lot of things within Catholics where we are allowed to have our own opinions. Areas that are not dogmatic. I try to restrain myself from posting to those types of threads until a poster starts to demand that it his opinion is a matter of dogma and anyone who holds a different opinion is wrong.

Fatima is a very good exmaple of that on CAF.

I think that some discussions can be avoided if all of us simply accept that the Church has the authority to make and change rules and the authority to interpret and apply revelation (private and public). This is where all of the discussions on topics such as: EF vs OF, CITH vs COTT, Fatima and the consecration of Russia, become academic questions that cannot be resolved by us, because we do not have the authority to change these rules. We have to begin with the premise that the Church can and will extend her safety-net as far as possible, even when it means changing rules or giving indults to rules. The argument is not worth continuing, because the law is what it is. At some point, we just have to let the discussion go and accept that the Church provides these options for our spiritual needs. Each of us has to make use of that which best meets our needs, within the law. You reach a point where you can’t say much more to people other than to take advantage of the options that the Church offers them and leave it at that.

Just would like to echo the response of others:

CAF is quite a wonderful place for someone confused about religion, researching the Church, or considering converting. I am very grateful to the wise, very scholarly responses that I receive. The knowledge of Catholic lay people (and apologists and probably professionals) on here is truly remarkable.

Also, what a blessing to read a question and know the exact part of the Bible or Catechism to call upon for the answer.
I very much hope to one day be in your position.

I believe CAF offers a great opportunity to learn more about our Catholic faith. Years ago while reading Reader’s Digest I came across a prayer a single mother wrote in an effort to ask Jesus for help in overcoming depression in raising several children. I was so impressed by this direct, beautiful prayer to Jesus that I had many little business cards made up which I leave around in my travels. I do not have a card here, but I would like to leave this prayer for all of us in order to give a faithful perspective as children of GOD.

Jesus, help to realize I am a child and heir of God
help me to realize my own goodness and value.
Help me to accept your love, mercy, forgiveness and my salvation
and, help me to treat myself with patience, mercy and gentleness
and may I treat others as I treat myself AMEN
