In the Mojave Desert, of all places. She looked tired, and smoked a great deal. I asked her about her husband. I think he was in poor health. This would have been about 2 years before he died.

Got three of the Eric John Stark books signed.

Curiously, I read all the Elrics and even a number of the endlessly branching other series. Until enough was enough.

Of course, got them all signed, maybe.

Added:Enjoyed Marvel Conan # 14 & 15, too.

I haven’t read any in years. I bought a couple of Elric anthologies, and it struck me that he probably wrote the Elric origin story at least twice. That was pretty much it for me. They are fun to read, but I found re-reading them difficult.

Thank you for that link. I didn’t know about Dostoevsky’s contact with Polish political prisoners, and I wonder whether that accounts for the way he presents his Polish characters in The Brothers Karamazov as sly, shifty, and untrustworthy. I must read that bit again, and the Grand Inquisitor too, which I remember from years ago as a caricature of clerical authoritarianism, just as his Polish characters are caricatures. In both cases, though, just speaking from memory, I see this talk of “fascination “, “repulsion”, “dislike”, and “hatred” as a pretty massive overstatement.

Ah, drat. There goes the omniscient image.

I never heard of that guy. Looks good. Tall pointy hat.

How about Cronkite the Barbarian? (I think).

I barely know of him, and his creation, I must admit.

That was a Poul Anderson parody of our favorite Barbarian. As MENTION MY NAME IN ATLANTIS was John Jakes’ take on him.

Always assuming I can remember what the heck I’m talking about.

Never saw that comic. But have seen what was likely the origin of the artist’s swipe: the 3rd panel in Prince Valiant, 12-23-37.

Close, anyway.

About the closest you get to it was the scene where the people at the back of the audience listening to the Sermon on the Mount can’t hear Jesus properly. “Blessed are the cheesemakers? What’s so special about the cheesemakers?” “It’s obviously not to be taken literally, it refers to any manufacturers of dairy products”. It does take blasphemy head on with the delightful stoning scene. “All I said is this tuna sandwich was good enough for Jehovah.”
I think you’ll find it was a piece of halibut rather than a tuna sandwich … My Python-fu is strong. Plus I have no life and a family who basically speak in Python quotes 😎👍🤓🤣

No I have not read the book, but I have watched the Harry Potter series on TV. My experiences are found in that. I am not calling the book evil. I am calling the selling of ideas about witchcraft evil. Something that is fiction is irrelevant to the argument because we are talking about communicating “ideas,” not whether or not the narratives actually happened. Why can’t anyone get this? If I purchase any material, whether it be a book, a DVD, or a ticket to the movie theater where evil ideas are passed on to me and I receive them in the name of “entertainment,” it will be hard for me to represent Christ in the way He wants to be represented. I make my Christian world view take a back seat to ideas obviously more important.

I do, and my salary is one tiny wafer-thin mint 🙂 Monsieur Creosote, alas, is no more, as you know.

To echo your “Why can’t anyone get this?” question, the frustration people are having with you about HP is that it is not passing on evil ideas.

So we might also ask why you can’t seem to “get this.”

it is not passing on evil ideas.
Not passing on evil ideas?.. this would depend on what you call evil. My definition comes from the inspired word of God. Deut. “… No one is to… v11 cast spells, consult a medium or a familiar spirit, or inquire of the dead. v12 Everyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord…”

Wizardry is condemned as an evil practice in this passage. The Character of Harry Potter sells the ideas of Wizardry to our children to be a good thing. This is a lie.

Where do you get your definition of evil? And on what bases?

p.s. I just turned on Harry Potter the Guide. It is kind of like a commercial about the various books. I’m sure this will make most of you so happy. But I don’t need to read all the blatant and obvious. I’m watching little kids use a wand to cast a spell. Wonderful stuff! … Let me read the caption on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: For ages 7 and up. “Adaption of the first of J.K. Rowling’s popular children’s novels about Harry Potter, a boy who learns on his eleventh birthday that he is the orphaned son of two powerful wizards and possesses unique magical powers of his own.”

Okay, here is the selling of ideas that otherwise would never enter the mind of an unsuspecting young child: The concept of Wizardry and to possess unique magical powers. Fiction?.. maybe in a literal sense by this particular HP series… but unique magical powers in real life? … YES! …IT HAPPENS IN THE REAL WORLD TOO!

Why did the producers want to sell the idea of “wizardry?” Why? … Why spells and unidentified powers? All of these ideas come from grown adults who’ve obviously educated themselves in these practices, and learned how to package them in a palatable format for children. Why?..

As a Christian with a Christian world view who absolutely believes in the supernatural on both sides, these ideas come from Satan Himself. Satan is a real being, not a holly wood character. Jesus said he is real and has real power. Do any of you believe my last statement? Why would anyone want to market these kind of ideas to vulnerable children who cannot process the content in a discernible way. The adults on this site can’t even do it. very sad.

I once read a fan fiction where it turned out that HP was an incarnation of some elder god like being… the conspiracy is coming to light!!!
