I agreeJust because someone is anti-Catholic doesn’t make them wrong about everything. There were, indeed, evil Popes (Alexander-6 was perhaps the worst). There was a period known as the Saeculum obscurum (the pornocracy, or reign of harlots) - a shameful 60 year period which spanned the reigns of fourteen blatantly sinful Popes.
As Catholics, we should never try to gloss over this shame. Indeed, in a strange way, we can use it in our favor. You had fourteen Popes who were whore-mongers and murderers. Their behavior was evil, but NOT ONCE did any of these Popes try to justify himself by codifying his behavior in Catholic Doctrine. Every one was completely orthodox in his teaching, despite their deep personal flaws.
This type of hypocrisy is nothing new. It was around in the time of Jesus. And Jesus taught us to respect legitimate authority, even when those in authority were unworthy of it:
History is history If sin and evil occured , let it out into the open light and examine it. If you try to make it seems less than what it was, it is as if you are participating in the acts.
In the end, people are people, whether a janitor of the church or the pope himself. Some are good, some are bad. Few are completley evil, and no one is made of angel food.
