A couple months ago I was in Mexico and took a walk through an area that had representations of the Aztec gods, some were actual archaeological items and others were duplicates. As I was walking I was suddenly overcome with a feeling of despair the like of which I have never experienced in my life. I was sure there was no God and when I died that was it. I literally ran out of the exhibit and once I was out the depair left. Still today two months later the experience scares me and the doubts creep in.

Was this the result of evil spirits or just an over active imagination?

Actual archaeological items meaning idols that could have had human sacrifices offered to them?

I’d not discount the evil spirits, but I’d also not dwell on what happened and maybe to talk to a priest if it kept popping back in my head.

Some were the real thng, that if they dated back to the time of the Aztecs. I keep thinking this is going to go away but it keeps creeping back. I am almost embarrassed to talk to myPriest about inanimate objects giving me such grief

An item worshiped as a god could very well have evil spirits attracted to it, so we’re not talking necessarily about an inanimate object. There could very well be something is animating it in a way.

Have you tried saying a Saint Michael prayer when it happens?

Maybe if your embarrassed you could bring it up in confession taking full advantage of the screen.

If this is really what you say it is, post it on the prayer intentions forum, and talk to a priest about it. If it is a spiritual issue, that should help. If it is a psychological issue, it will still help. 🙂

Praying for you.

Are you wearing a scapular? If not, do so.

Also pray.

What you’re experiencing could be a combination of both, imagination, but inspired by evil spirits.

Remember, you belong to Christ and being such, no evil can harm you.

Thanks Jim. i have been thnking about getting a scapular-this may be the impetus to get me to do so!

As I was walking I was suddenly overcome with a feeling of despair the like of which I have never experienced in my life.
I had a similar experience many years ago. We were visiting in Boston, and while on the Freedom Trail… we stopped at the Bunker Hill Monument.

For some reason (and I will never, ever forget this) I was overcome with a feeling of “dread”. All I wanted to do was get out of that place. I don’t try to explain it… but it was eerie. And I don’t think I’d ever want to go there again.

I would recommend to you, that you place yourself under the care of Our Blessed Mother, Mary. And (if you don’t, already) pray the Rosary. Our Lady is a very protective Mother to us all. And she always, ALWAYS leads us to Jesus. God bless you.

I’m not sure it has to be an either/or situation. The one can make use of the other.

I’d confess it. Like Fr. Amorth says, confession is more powerful than exorcism. Shine that big bright light of confession on to it, and see what happens. Not that you’ve done something sinful, but rather as an act of humbling yourself to be free from the pride of not wanting to appear silly. The enemy knows all about pride, after all.

Do you have St. Benedict medals in the house?

Everyone has had good suggestions.

If the same thing happened to me, I would definitely recite the St. Michael’s Prayer every day together with a Rosary or as many Hail Mary’s as you can. (The devil hates the Blessed Mother.)

I would also bring the matter up with a priest, either in Confession or not, and ask for a special blessing. I think I read once where sometimes, exposure to an evil spirit might cause it to stay with you – not like in being possessed, more like being pestered by a mosquito (only you can’t kill it with bug spray!).

I think a priest’s prayer and blessing would definitely help (in any situation 😉 ). “It’s better to be safe than sorry,” as the old saying goes.

It is quite possible that what you experienced may have been a demonic attack. Often attacks are not big spectacular shows, but attacks on our minds - giving us thoughts of despair, doubt, anxiety, temptation, etc.

Just remember that demons are chained dogs who can do nothing unless God allows it. If God allows them to bother us, it is ultimately for our own good in the long run, just like any other trial or suffering.

The St. Michael prayer is helpful, and the Hail Mary is also very powerful. I generally say both prayers when I am aware that I am being attacked. It comes with the territory in deliverance ministry.

Don’t forget to say the Jesus Prayer, too: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me a sinner.”

Demons really hate that one.

In the past I had one particular spiritual experience which was very frightening. I said a Hail Mary but this didn’t help. It was only when I prayed directly to Jesus for protection that the episode ended.

I’m not protestant and I have a devotion to Our Blessed Mother but this event really shocked me. I wonder why the Hail Mary was ineffective.

I must say that both the Hail Mary and St Michael prayer have been VERY effective in other situations but not in the one mentioned above. I wonder why? I can’t figure it out.

Thanks for the tip - I’ll add that one to my list. 👍

I wouldn’t say so much that the prayer didn’t work as perhaps God wanted you to pray differently, or just pray more, but we really can’t know that for sure. Whatever He allows is ultimately for our own good.

I’ve heard of situations where a demon was forced to explain that a possession was allowed to continue because the people involved in praying for the woman weren’t spending enough time praying in front of the Blessed Sacrament. The people increased their prayer time at Church and the woman was freed.

My opinion (meaning I’m no expert, seek further guidance, etc.):

The following may be useful to you:

The Brown Scapular
The Rosary (Beads)
The Miraculous Medal
The St. Benedict Medal (This one targets demons particularly)

All of the foregoing blessed by a priest.

The Prayer to St. Michael.

I made up this prayer, so it may or may not suit: “Begone, devil, and take your allies with you, for the Lord Jesus Christ, by his Cross and Resurrection, has gained dominion over ye forever!”.

I’m Irish, so the ‘ye’ is normal language for me. The idea is, it states a crushing fact. They’re losers. They can’t argue with that.

Here’s another idea, which came to me when I dreamed I was being bothered by fiends:

“If you exist, then God exists, and if God exists, then you are defeated forever. Now clear off!” And then I turned over and went back to sleep.

I’m not reading much into it, as I often play video games late at night, and they can give nightmares.

RE: Aztec, and other ancient pagan artefacts. Here is a notion I’ve picked up reading a lot of occult books: That pagan priests were sorcerors, and practiced disgusting and deadly rites. ‘New Age’ neo-pagans have no idea about this, even the educated ones.

I’d keep well away from such sites, people, practices and objects. You might pick up an unwelcome passenger.

The holy name of Jesus is very powerful against evil sprits. This is what was probably needed in that case.

evil spirits are all around. in addition to the prayer to st. michael, you can say prayers for exorcism. they can be found listed at the bottom of the spiritdaily.com homepage. I will pray for you.

kate

p.s. I carry st. benedict on my person always. I have one above every entrance and window in my home. this was recommended to me by my parish priest. st. benedict medals require a special blessing. the initials on the back of the medal represent words of prayer for exorcism against all evil.

Och, Layman! One thing I’ve learned here and in other places is not to address any devil or demonic entity directly. Unless you have the proper spiritual preparedness, you may wind up in deeper trouble than before.

Instead of your telling the evil to begone, call on G_D (in the name of Christ Jesus and through the power of the Holy Spirit) to tell the entity to leave. This leaves you out of the loop and much safer in the long run. And if you feel REALLY threatened, plead the Blood of Jesus over and over, calling on it to cover you and protect you.
