How are you gonna go about testing and falsifying evolution theory?
For testing evolution scientists make predictions (in some cases retrodictions) and do experiments.

For example, evolution works on random mutations, so the Luria-Delbrück experiment was done to check that mutations arise randomly.

The search for Tiktaalik is another example. Scientists were looking for a fossil fish with legs from about 370 Mya living in shallow water, so they looked for fossil bearing rocks of about that age laid down in shallow water. They found Tiktaalik. The date had been derived from the dating of earlier and later fossils: fish with stumps and legged amphibians.

Evolution also retrodicts that there was never a living pegasus, a horse with bird’s wings. So far no fossil pegasi have been found.

As to falsifying evolution, you just need to read Charles Darwin:If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed, which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down.

If it could be proved that any part of the structure of any one species had been formed for the exclusive good of another species, it would annihilate my theory, for such could not have been produced through natural selection.
  • both from Chapter Six of Origins.
Behe’s Irreducible Complexity was an attempt to meet Darwin’s first criterion. The attempt failed, but it was an interesting failure leading to much good research.

This one proves that mutation happens but not evolution… evolution has a lot more in it then just mutation… and it does not seem to prove that random mutation is a good thing and can develop evolution, mutation happens also in humans but seems it usually develops into wrong direction making some humans disabled

This one is as good proof as God exists look at it from bible!!! the fact that there is a species that seems to have qualities of two different species doesn’t proof too much…

And here Darwin is using flawed reasoning… Is there any real Good evidence or proof?

There should be a method to test it at least? is there any? and what comes to falsification maybe a little better one should exist since just saying everything is evolution, proof that something come not through evolution then evolution theory is wrong seems a bit odd… There should be easy and very apparent falsifying method for scientific theories, otherwise how can they be scientific? or even believable?

I’ve got a thought for you, 'Catholic’

Look heavenwards on a starry night sometime. Within the scope of your sight are probably a billion stars and their ‘star systems’ even if sight cannot reach them. Included ‘within’ that snapshot are the countless asteroids, moons, debri, dust, etc…etc.

Multiply that by, say, 13 billion, for argument’s sake, since our star system is minute and among several billion others that we do not know about.

Now, did you know that EVERY SINGLE celestial particle, planet down to gas form, in that ‘equation’ whether mobile or stationary, has HAD
its existence, birth, form, size, weight, speed, direction, trajectory, collisions, results, ‘death’…already WEIGHED AND CALCULATED INTO “THE PLAN”!!! That’s every single, seen and unseen, particle!

There are some who say, ‘no god can do that!’
Even some who ‘believe’ say, ‘not even God can do that!’…and so it is easier to theorize that those ‘collisions’ are random and by chance, just as ‘mutations’ in evolution are random and unguided.

I point these out because your examples above suggest an option between God ‘directing’ car accidents and no involvement at all.

Every human has free will, but every choice or decision HAS CONSEQUENCES because one is not isolated in a vacuum. Just as celestial collisions effects itself and surroundings, so does the choices one makes.

Every soul in existence, God is personally aware of its ‘life’! Every, last, monkey hair of them.

By the universe running “free” and not hung by strings give sit more meaning, more freedom. We are total independent creatures, in a universe God began. That’s alot of meaning on my part.

I know you cannot understand that cause you have probably never though tit before.

And if God cause devolution, directing it, well then you’re calling Him a monste rI’d say, because of all the thousands upon thousands of creatures he destroyed among these millions of years, just to get to us. I agree with Dawkins that evolution guided by God in this way is ridiculous, but I agree more so with Ken Miller that it makes the most sense were God wanted to have independent creatures to give to Him our love.

“Every human has free will, but every choice or decision HAS CONSEQUENCES because one is not isolated in a vacuum. Just as celestial collisions effects itself and surroundings, so does the choices one makes.”

Acts of “freedom” in nature are evident all the time, unless you think of the universe as a repetitive machine, operating from one robotic point to the other.

When a woman is driving even UNDER the speed limit, hits a patch of black ice that nature formed, slides off the road and strikes another care full of people, crash, burn alive, do you think that is any “consequence” or bad judgment, or sin that she did? Of course not, neither was it’s God’s doing. It’s a random accident.

God does intervene of course, but if He did EVERY SINGLE MOMENT that we would be mere puppets, would NEVER lear a thing for ourself. And that’s why He allows “chance” to continue. It gives us meaning and helps us learn.

“So your response if that He’s not in control of everything? Are you denying His omnipotence now, or not? Are you perhaps denying His omniscience? Because even if God didn’t choose for them to happen, He certainly knew, before He even created the universe, that these events would happen. And yet He chose to let it happen anyway. There’s no escaping the fact that God is completely in control. If He didn’t make it happen, He let it happen. There’s no easy way out. You simply have to learn to trust Divine Providence.”

No, I do not believe He is “willingly” in control of everything. He could be, but I think it makes better sense that He is not, in order so that creation is free. He knew, and allowed it to occur.

I have no problem with this because it hit me hard when I read Miller’s book. I understand exactly what he means by “puppets.” I think most people don’t like it that way cause they want God to do everything for them, want God everywhere, have to come up with a reason for why God did this that way or this why, why did He let this happen?

If He acted ALWAYS LIKE THIS (I believe He intervenes ALOT!) everything would be “puppets.” By human beings evolving the way we did, we have become free independent creatures, not robotically formed. Though I guess that niether would be so bad. But to me it makes us more of a free creature because by God starting the universe (and intervening daily) we have become such a free species that that’s why Human Beings are so important to us, maybe even that’s why we can choose repentence and the fallen Angels cannot.

Well, I’m sure to get stones now. The heathen I am, with my silly beliefs 🙂

This one proves that mutation happens but not evolution.
There is not one single experiment, this is one of many experiments that taken together tend to confirm evolution. For another one try Historical contingency and the evolution of a key innovation in an experimental population of Escherichia coli. That paper is part of the scientific literature. On Google Scholar (scholar.google.com/) I get over 2,500,000 hits on the word “evolution”. You will not get proof in one single experiment, the strength of evolution is in the consilience and consistency of the results from 2,500,000 experiments.
evolution has a lot more in it then just mutation.
Correct, which is why there is a lot more to support evolution than just the Luria-Delbrück experiment; I merely gave just one example.
and it does not seem to prove that random mutation is a good thing
“good” is not relevant to evolution. Is gravity not a “good thing” because people can use gravity to commit suicide by hanging? Evolution happens. The theory of evolution is our best explanation of how it happens. Good and bad are philosophical or theological concepts.
mutation happens also in humans but seems it usually develops into wrong direction making some humans disabled
Mostly right. The majority of mutations are neutral and have no observable effect (which is why we generally don’t notice them). Most humans have over 100 mutations of which more than 95% are neutral. Of the non-neutral mutations you are correct that the great majority are deleterious (though maybe only slightly). There are a few beneficial mutations such as resistance to HIV or an enhanced ability to deal with the fat-rich Western diet: see A Rare Protein Mutation Offers New Hope for Heart Disease Patients.
the fact that there is a species that seems to have qualities of two different species doesn’t proof too much.
It provides a good example of a transitional fossil: fish with stumps → fish with legs → amphibian with legs. Furthermore, Tiktaalik’s legs have the same structure as ours: ball joint to single bone to elbow/knee joint to double bone to wrist/ankle joint. A primitive tetrapod limb.
And here Darwin is using flawed reasoning.
How so? I can see no flaws. If either case could be shown then evolution would indeed be falsified.
There should be a method to test it at least?
Every time a bacterium evolves immunity to an antibiotic evolution is tested. Every time an insect evolves immunity to an insecticide evolution is tested. Every time a genetic algorithm is used to solve a problem evolution is tested. Evolution has been tested many times and has worked every time so far.

just because there is a lot of research does not mean is true, this argument is a fallacy, the same as there 2 billion Christians so Christianity must be true… You need to point out a single study which will give enough proof, not many which will give proof to different parts of theory, and might be incompatible

O and that paper is again of low level evolution or changes but doesn’t determine that evolution has necessary direction or possibility of developing overtime into a huge diverse life as we have in this planet now… it proof very little, or almost nothing
Correct, which is why there is a lot more to support evolution than just the Luria-Delbrück experiment; I merely gave just one example.

You are right on this one, that is why i wonder why atheist always use these kinds of terms science is good, religion is bad…

This gives proof to low level evolution (or actually helpful mutation) but not for the Evolution i suppose we are talking about

which only proves that Tiktaalik existed and nothing else significant, there is no relationship shown to other animals which is conclusive
How so? I can see no flaws. If either case could be shown then evolution would indeed be falsified.
If i say well look at human mind that cannot be caused by evolution, another side will say, well we will find out the evidence of how it was caused by evolution later on… This argument of Darwin leaves an openness for such bad counter-argument and is therefore flawed for any person who is a serious rationalist and skeptic

Another example of low level evolution but not of Evolution, which are two different things

How do you proof Evolution again?

How do you proof Evolution again?
You have made it clear that you have no interest in a real answer to this question. You have determined that evolution is false and nothing can change your mind. I’m not sure what you think you are demonstrating with this discussion. Rossum knows his science. You either don’t understand science or you chose, based on faith alone, to ignore the science.

Rossum answered your questions.

suppose this kind of answer means that you don’t have a good answer?

I am merely trying to find out whether there is real evidence for it, I believe in any scientific objective evidence there is?

Is it too much to ask questions about a theory of science? Why can i not ask the same way as people ask faithful to testify their belief…

I thought if it is real scientific theory and fact, it could be proven without any trouble at all

Rossum did not answer the question, he just pointed out some facts which do not cope with the scale of evolution we are talking about… this is an easy way for scientist to get out from trouble…

In the end you make a very ugly assertion of me… You go in Gods mercy and grace

🤷

I did not know this question is so hard to answer, that you have to result to hate and anger over a simple question… scientific theories must have falsifiability and testability, so how do you falsify or test Evolution? please, otherwise it seems like the world has gone crazy over a children fairytale called Evolution? there must be evidence?

Anyway i’ll leave for the weekend, please answer with more then hate, I am not being stupid on purpose and i do not ignore evidence, if there really is some? I am not Sola Scriptura. I just do not want to believe something just because academics say is real, it is like believing in Santa because my momma said is real…

Gods grace to you all

suppose this kind of answer means that you don’t have a good answer?
You will suppose what ever you will suppose. You were given good, accurate answers. You chose to dismiss them for your own particular reasons. Why should anyone waste time giving you any other answers when it is clear that you will reject them as well?
I am merely trying to find out whether there is real evidence for it, I believe in any scientific objective evidence there is?
No you are not. You were given objective evidence and you blew it off.
Is it too much to ask questions about a theory of science? Why can i not ask the same way as people ask faithful to testify their belief…
Of course it is not too much to ask questions. Questions are good. That’s what science is about. You, however, want to ask questions but don’t want the answers.

Asking someone to testify to their belief is different than asking for scientific evidence. Do you not see the difference?
I thought if it is real scientific theory and fact, it could be proven without any trouble at all
There is no such thing as proof in science. It is a real scientific theory and it is a fact.
Rossum did not answer the question, he just pointed out some facts which do not cope with the scale of evolution we are talking about… this is an easy way for scientist to get out from trouble…
Yes he did. You just didn’t like the answers.

If you don’t like the assertion, show me where I am wrong.

How to falsify evolution: Find a mammal fossil in Cambrian sediments.

How to test evolution: Make a prediction based on the theory and see if it happens. See Tiktaalik that Rossum refered you to as an example.

Darwin made the prediction that there must have been transitionals between major groups existing today. He remarked on how few examples were known in his time, but predicted that they would be found. Darwinists like Huxley predicted that transitionals between birds and dinosaurs and hoofed mammals and whales would be found. This seemed absurd at the time, but eventually, the transitionals were found, confirming the theory.

Likewise, DNA analyses confirm common descent by a method we use to check human descent.

And natural selection is tested in college freshman biology classes every year. And it is confirmed. There is a huge body of evidence showing predicted allele distributions happen as the theory says they must.

This is what Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI say when they refer to a large body of evidence supporting evolution.
Please, otherwise it seems like the world has gone crazy over a children fairytale called Evolution? there must be evidence?
It would be very healthy for you as a Catholic to go and find out about it. If you’re serious and sincere, I’ll be willing to spend as much time here or in PM as is needed to answer your questions.

Before I turn to your questions I would like to point out a couple of things. First of all, evolution is a fact. Evolution can be defined as “the change in the genomes of an interbreeding population over time”. This is seen every time a population of bacteris’s genome changes to confer resistance to an antibiotic. This is commonplace and is accceted by most creationists, though they do tend to use the word “microevolution” to denote this.

Secondly, the Theory of Evolution is the current best explanation we have for why genomes of populations change over time. A theory is not a fact and can never be proven. Gravity is a fact, but no theory of gravitation has ever been proven. All scientific theories are provisional until replaced by a better theory. Newton’s theory of gravitation was provisional and was replaced by Einstein’s theory of general relativity. Einstein’s theory is also provisional until it will in its turn be replaced by a theory of quantum gravitation.

Darwin’s original theory has been modified since 1859 to include Mendelian genetics, neutral drift, DNA and punctuated equilibrium among other things. It is supported by a huge amount of evidence and is the best explanation we currently have for how evolution happens. It is not proved, but it has been shown to be correct beyond reasonable doubt.
just because there is a lot of research does not mean is true
It is not the amount of research, it is that all the research is consistent and supports evolution through multiple lines of evidence. The research is there if you want to read it, if you cannot be bothered to read it then you are like those people who sat “I know the Bible is wrong, so I have never read it.”
You need to point out a single study which will give enough proof, not many which will give proof to different parts of theory, and might be incompatible
If you want me to answer your question then you cannot limit my answer. Evolution is a large and complex subject so if you want evidence for all of it then you will get a large and complex answer. If you do not like the answer then do not ask the question. This is rocket science.
that paper is again of low level evolution
You asked about “evolution”. I give you a paper on that subject and now you are moving the goal posts. If you wanted a paper on macroevolution then you should have said so. I can only answer the question you ask, not the question you meant to ask but didn’t. For an example of macroevolution see Hox protein mutation and macroevolution of the insect body plan. I got over 8,500 hits for “macroevolution” on Google scholar, this was just the first one that came up.
or changes but doesn’t determine that evolution has necessary direction or possibility of developing overtime into a huge diverse life as we have in this planet now… it proof very little, or almost nothing
See 29+ Evidences for Macroevolution.
there is support but not proof
Proof is for mathematics, not science. Science has evidence, and a great deal of it.
which only proves that Tiktaalik existed and nothing else significant, there is no relationship shown to other animals which is conclusive
Tiktaalik existed. It existed at the right time (as predicted), it existed with the right characteristics (as predicted) it existed at the right place (as predicted). Successful predictions are a sign of successful theories. In this case, successful predictions from evolution. Young earth creationism would have predicted (falsely) that Tiktaalik would have been found in the same timeframe as fish-with-stumps and amphibians. That is why young earth creationisnm fails as science, it makes false predictions.
If i say well look at human mind that cannot be caused by evolution, another side will say, well we will find out the evidence of how it was caused by evolution later on… This argument of Darwin leaves an openness for such bad counter-argument and is therefore flawed for any person who is a serious rationalist and skeptic
We cannot stop using science because it might be disproved in future. Science uses the best methods it has here and now. Until you can actually produce a non-evolutionary scientific explanation for the human mind then science will continue to use the best theory we have at the moment.
Another example of low level evolution but not of Evolution, which are two different things
You would do better to use the more common terms “microevolution” and “macroevolution”. Even these are a bit confusing because creationists and biologists use them slightly differently:

Biologists:* microevolution - evolution within a species.
  • marcoevolution - evolution above the level of species.
Creationists:* microevolution - evolution within a created ‘kind’.
  • marcoevolution - evolution above the level of a created ‘kind’.
Most creationists will accept evolution within kinds (bear kind etc.) but deny evolution between kinds.
How do you proof Evolution again?
Proof is for mathematics, not science. Evolution has been shown to be correct beyond reasonable doubt. If you have unreasonable doubt then nothing I can show you will convince you.

OK I’ll give these a shot at an answer:

Roger << I’d LOVE to have you and Bob Sungenis come in and debate the issue–Would that be fun?? >>

You mean in person, in front of your class? What city are you in? I’m there dude. 😃

Bob would probably win, he’s a better debater than me with more experience at public speaking. But I’ll give him a fight doing my best Dalrymple and Prothero imitation! And he’ll quote all his best Answers In Genesis, ICR, and Kolbe Center material!

Roger << I appreciate your help, however I do have a question. How do we determine if the “species” (the fossil) is the same “species” or a different species? >>

That’s a question more for professional scientists (how are species defined and determined), but I believe it is covered briefly in Prothero’s book. What you are looking for in “transitional species” is mosaic evolution (characteristics between species that overlap yet are different). The changes required for the Reptile to Mammal transition for example are quite large, what can only be called macroevolution. The changes from a land-dwelling artiodactyl to sea-going whale are also quite large. Again, macroevolution. We have plenty of transitional or “mosaic” species for these changes.

Roger << I mean it is kind of confusing since there are those who say that Archaeopteryx was a bird, and that the example of the horse was just simply that, the same species even though the horse evolved. >>

Archaeopteryx means “ancient wing” and is considered a “bird” because it has feathers. But now we know that several ancient dinosaurs had feathers as well (the “feathered dinosaurs” Sinosauropteryx, Caudipteryx, Beipiaosaurus, Sinornithosaurus, Microraptor, Confuciusornis). Archaeopteryx is also reptile or dinosaur because of the reptilian or dinosaurian features. It is a classic “mosaic” species and therefore transitional or intermediate between birds and dinosaurs. You said it is disputed as a transitional. It is not disputed except by creationists. I quoted all the documentation in some previous posts.

Roger << For example here is a portion of a review for the book “Death of Evolution” Author Eric Berhminghan review by Wallace Johnson. >>

Another bad book. What you need to start finding and reading are those books published by reputable university publishers, the kind you find in your evolution, biology, geology, paleontology sections at your local university library. These popular traditional Catholic anti-evolution books are just not gonna cut it when it comes to accuracy on the science. Another one is Gerard Keane’s Creation Rediscovered (which I now have). A bad book on the science, but they are generally OK (if not simplistic) when it comes to classical Catholic theology and dogma. They need to reconcile modern science with Catholic dogma, and not misrepresent the science by suggesting evolution is not true. That’s why I recommend the recent Popes and Cardinal Schonborn’s book instead.

OK onto the review of the Wallace Johnson The Death of Evolution anti-evolution book:

(1) Second Law of Thermo does not apply to open systems, but to closed or isolated systems. The earth is not a closed system, and energy provided by the sun allows the total energy to increase or decrease as needed. All that is required for evolution to occur is reproduction, heritable variation, and selection, and that’s what we have going on in nature.

(2) Most mutations are neutral, not harmful.

(3) There are plenty of transitional fossils.

(4) Archaeopteryx is a bird because it has feathers. It is a classic “mosaic” of evolution exhibiting both bird and reptile (dinosaur) features, therefore it is transitional / intermediate.

(5) The Horse series is not meaningless. We definitely see evolution there, from the small “dawn horse” the size of a dog with different toes, to the big modern Equus with one toe.

(6) The known hominid species are not apes, men, and/or frauds. They are definitely between apes and human beings. The Piltdown hoax was exposed by evolutionist scientists 50 years ago.

All the scientific evidence or arguments in that book is either misrepresented, misreported, or terribly mistaken. I have about 20 of those kinds of books. Again, the antidote is the Index to Creationist Claims (published in 2006 as The Counter-Creationism Handbook by Univ of CA Press which I own).

Roger << I understand you may think these people are “nuts,” but Sungenis also quotes evolutionists, on his site >>

What does Sungenis quote for the most part? Well-known, discredited, out-of-context quotations of various “evolutionists” that are lifted from other creationist books (like Henry Morris, Duane Gish, and others). This “creationist quote mining” is well-known. It is basically dishonest.

I don’t think Sungenis is nuts, I think his Not By… books are generally great Catholic theological books. He bought into a young-earth creationist mentality early in his Christian conversion, and now finds it hard to break that. I can’t explain his "geocentrism" either (apparently picked up much later in life, when he read some of G. Bouw’s books). These can only be broken by being honest with the science.

Roger << The DNA is similiar, but different correct? Are you saying that archaeopteryx would not half bird DNA, nor dino DNA but different DNA? >>

Don’t know the answer to that one, but from what I understand we cannot extract DNA from fossils. 😃 DNA studies are done from the blood of living species (e.g. modern birds), but there are some extractions of DNA from more recently extinct species (like Neandertals). The phylogenetic “tree of life” indicating “universal common descent” (i.e. macroevolution) constructed from DNA or “molecular” studies is very similar if not identical to those constructed from geology, paleontology, and fossil studies. They confirm each other.

Phil P
Thanks Phil!! I went to watch the football game last night and drink some beers and I see you all have been discussing alot. It is very much appreciated. Ok now onto the DNA.

I understand we cant get DNA from fossils, but the question still remains. Wouldnt the DNA have to be different in a transitional species? If it is a new species then wouldnt the DNA have to be different?

I am going to be teaching at a Catholic High(Religion) school this September. I have a degree in Theology and History and have spent 10 years in the public school system teaching history.
This year will be my first at a Catholic school and I am very excited because I am going to be teaching Religion.😃

Ok here is my question. Do you think this is a good idea? When dealing with creation/evolution I was planning on presenting both sides.
(a) How would this be relevant to a history course?
(b) What do you mean by “both” sides?

that is appropriate for a Catholic school

Technically there really aren’t any “weak spots” in evolution at the level it should be taught in high school. Hammering out subtle details is PhD-level
stuff.

I think that if someone with a non-technical background such as yourself tried to make technical criticisms of evolution you could be cause a drop in your credibility.

Exactly. And with your credibility will go Faith in the Christian religion. You could very easily create an atheist - or several. Much of the Creationists arguments are bunk. These kids are not stupid. They do weigh evidence. Especially on religious matters. The young “fence-sitters” (and this is the age when faith is most tenuous-young rebellion etc.) may very easily reject Christianity completely when they see how flimsy the Creationist arguments are. In my opinion, Catholicism knows how easy it is to get burnt by using Literalist arguments against scientific facts. Capernicus, Galileo, etc. etc. The fundamentalists - because of their ignorance of history - haven’t discovered that yet.

If you don’t know enough about evolution to make a good argument For it, then how can you possibly argue against it in a religious class- which I presume is your intent. Best study what the Church says- and why it says it.
Remember, some of the greatest scientists in history were scientists. Most of them were students or instructers in Catholic Universities- which the Catholic Church invented. The Pope put Galilio under lock and key in the Vatican, not so much as punishment, but because he new Galileo was Right - and to protect him from the igorant mobs who would kill him. This threat came from both within the Church and from without it. Catholics are not threatened by evolution. We are not Fundamenalists. We do not have to bend, deny, or avoid scientific truth to fit a Literalist Bible interpretation. We are not afraid of science. Truth is Truth. 👍

Robin

Propaganda. Gregor Mendel was a monk. Evolution without divine providence cannot occur as advertised. See Human Persons Created in the Image of God, part 69.

I would caution against calling anything a fact without proof. There is no such thing as ‘mountains of evidence’ without proof.

Good luck and God bless,
Ed

By the universe running “free” and not hung by strings gives it more meaning, more freedom.
How can any creature (such as the universe) be free without free will? …it can’t.
And if God caused evolution, directing it, well then you’re calling Him a monster I’d say, because of all the thousands upon thousands of creatures he destroyed among these millions of years, just to get to us.
But I’m not. Because all of those millions of creatures had a purpose, not only in the temporary ecological niche that they filled and the other animals that they fed, but by the fact that they contributed to the survival of the species that went on to make us who we are today.
Acts of “freedom” in nature are evident all the time, unless you think of the universe as a repetitive machine, operating from one robotic point to the other.
I think if the universe as being intimately guided by the freedom of God’s Divine Providence. Subatomic particle “A” performed this unpredictable action, instead of this other one it could have performed instead. Why? Great question. But unless you think that there is no cause, and that something can come from nothing, it has to have happened that way, and not the other way, for a reason.
When a woman is driving even UNDER the speed limit, hits a patch of black ice that nature formed, slides off the road and strikes another care full of people, crash, burn alive, do you think that is any “consequence” or bad judgment, or sin that she did? Of course not, neither was it’s God’s doing.

God does intervene of course, but if He did EVERY SINGLE MOMENT that we would be mere puppets…
Leave the occasions of human freedom out of it… we know we have free will, so we’re not puppets. What about everything else, all of the things that are beyond out control? If everything that happens has a cause, and not just a deterministic cause, but a free and unpredictable cause, why not let that be free will? When it’s not left up to us, it’s up to God. How in the world does that infringe upon our freedom? And what other alternative (aside from “there is no cause”, which has huge problems) is there?
And that’s why He allows “chance” to continue.
How is “chance” related to Divine Providence? Do “chance” events have a cause, and if so, what? This is the problem Ken Miller never quite answered, and where I really honestly the key to solving all of his difficulties lies.
No, I do not believe He is “willingly” in control of everything. He could be, but… He knew, and allowed it to occur.
There are two kinds of ways that He can intervene: directly, or through an instrument. Sure, He doesn’t directly intervene in a supernatural way, all of the time… if He did, I would agree that we have problems. But what about constantly intervening indirectly, through quantum indeterminacy? To go with Ken Miller’s other example: flip a coin, and the outcome is unpredictable. But why does that mean God isn’t involved? If the coin flip isn’t a result of a strict deterministic physical universe, then what ultimately causes the outcome to be this, and not that?
Well, I’m sure to get stones now. The heathen I am, with my silly beliefs 🙂
Not necessarily. 🙂 This is the reason I’m willing to forgive Ken Miller for his position… it’s not a very clear issue for a lot of people, and I think he does have the best of intentions in mind, by trying to neutralize what he believes are some very difficult problems.

I just don’t see the same problems. I think the “problems” that people see with 100% Divine Providence are nothing more than an illusion, because they can’t see the “big picture” and understand how everything that happens happens for a reason. And I’m not claiming that I can see the “big picture”… but I do know that it’s there, because the Catholic faith teaches us that it is, and that is must be, because at the very least, nothing can happen unless God allows it to happen, and has a reason for allowing it to happen.

Proof only applies to mathmatics and alcohol.

I understand we cant get DNA from fossils
From some fossils, not from others. The older a fossil the less likely it is to have detectable DNA in it.
Wouldnt the DNA have to be different in a transitional species? If it is a new species then wouldnt the DNA have to be different?
I am not clear what you are getting at here. DNA testing can identify an individual human so each of us has different DNA, at least in part. Closely related humans have less difference between them than more distantly related humans (witness paternity tests). Some of our DNA we share with chimps - the two genes for Cytochrome-C are identical across the two species. Other parts of our DNA are different between ourselves and chimps. Where Neanderthal DNA has been sequenced it has less differences from ours than chimps do. Monkey DNA is further from ours than chimps. Mouse DNA is further still and sunflower DNA even further. At every level there are differences. Looking at the degree of difference helps scientists to work out the tree of relationships between species.

A transitional species will have some similarities with ancestor and successor species and some differences as well.
