I stand corrected.

But nevertheless there were some unhappy campers.

I certainly hope no one gets fooled again by that “it will be there forever” stuff.
Well really, that was a promise that couldn’t be kept–one of those incentives that organizations sometimes offer that everyone with any sense knows can’t be kept indefinitely. If there’s any fault, it’s with the Schuller ministry for making such an offer/promise at all. No matter who the new owners were going to be they were not obligated to keep such an unkeepable promise. Nor was it a condition of the sale. I think returning the stones to those who paid for them gratis or storing them is enough for the diocese to offer.

Yes I agree. $3000 was a lot of money! No guarantee when it comes to forever in some church projects. 🤷

No! Certainly not! All of the graves and their tombstones are preserved and the diocese still runs/administers the cemetery as a “non-denominational” (i.e., non-Catholics can be buried there too) cemetery.

What you’re thinking is something the Schullers started about 30 years ago to raise money. For $3,000, you could have a memorial stone, with a loved one’s name and a bible quote, placed in the “Walk of Faith”. The people were promised that the stones would be there “forever”. There was an outcry (read about it here) because the new owners, the diocese, announced plans to eventually remove the memorial stones. The 1,800 stones will be removed because the campus needs to be repaired and renovated. NONE of the stones will be destroyed. Whoever wants the stones back can have them back; the unclaimed ones will be put into storage.

Personally, I’m hoping that some small corner of the campus can be set aside so these stones can be moved there, as an act of charity towards the people who spent that money to have their loved ones remembered.
Thanks for that update. That “Walk of Faith” is really something. A wonderful IDEA!

However the stones themselves over the years have shown signs of wear, cracking etc.

Perhaps as the campus evolves (uh, or should I say is redeemed, resurrected or elevated? ;)) - that IDEA can be incorporated in another way … perhaps using the same scriptures … and the names of the people who initially submitted them to the “walk”.

Maybe EWTN could do a program calling attention to the Walk … both as an instructive presentation of why the policy is being implemented, and on a higher level, to present the scriptures in a way that demonstrates ecumenism, evangelism, intellectual outreach and … Catholic devotion.

That Walk is enjoyed by the many tourists that still come to the campus, even though it is not promoted.

Per the TV studio at the Christ Cathedral Campus, I couldn’t be happier. Well, I could be happier … when I see the inspirational programs I anticipate to be produced there actually be broadcast. 🙂

What I would like to see (or see more of) on EWTN is basic instruction in the Catholic faith. Many Catholics, especially the younger ones, could use a bit better formation than I’ve been seeing. Things like instruction for Confirmation classes (the gifts of the Holy Spirit, apostolate and commitment, etc.).

That would ALSO help those seeking the Lord in their “WALK”.

Praying that our largest Catholic Diocese in the US (Los Angeles) along with the Orange County Diocese will influence Catholic students enrolled in the Southern Cal and UCLA film schools to offer their services to the EWTN site. With the extreme competitive environment that exists in the current film industry, this would allow using their God given talents to enter into the industry and write, produce, and direct Christian value projects.

God Bless and Peace to all.
