Eternal rest, grant unto her O Lord
and let perpetual light shine upon her.

May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen

Not everyone gets their passing commented on by Popes and Archbishops
From the article:

Bishop Robert Barron, an auxiliary of Los Angeles, remembered Mother Angelica as “one of the most significant figures in the post-conciliar Catholic Church in America.” She was “the most watched and most effective Catholic evangelizer of the last fifty years.”

He said that during the 1980s and 90s, some of her critics mocked her as a “crude popularizer,” an “arch-conservative,” and a “culture warrior.”

“And yet while her critics have largely faded away, her impact and influence are uncontestable. Against all odds and expectations, she created an evangelical vehicle without equal in the history of the Catholic Church.”

Bishop Barron praised Mother Angelica for “her trust in God’s providence, her keen sense of the supernatural quality of religion, and her conviction that suffering is of salvific value.” He lauded her emphasis on prayer, liturgy, the sacraments, the saints, Eucharistic Adoration, and spiritual warfare.

“Mother endured tremendous suffering, both physical and psychological, most of her life, and she appreciated these trials as opportunities for spiritual growth,” he said.

The bishop granted that Mother Angelica would have recognized she was not perfect. Sometimes her comments were “insufficiently nuanced and balanced,” while her “hot temper” could lead her to characterize her opponents unfairly.

However, the bishop said Mother Angelica will have “a very honored place” in Catholic history.

Perhaps if she hadn’t had so many wicked bishops and priests fighting her and promoting heresy, she wouldn’t have needed to make such comments? (It’s boggling that he makes reference to those evil men, and still makes a comment about her response to them.) And her anger was a righteous anger at the wickedness she saw from those in the Church. I wish more bishops and priests learned from her and had such fire and zeal for the Lord.

During the first memorial sermon for Mother Angelica on Tuesday, in a chapel at the headquarters of EWTN Global Catholic Network in Irondale, EWTN Chaplain Joseph Wolfe described the last three days of Mother Angelica’s life and her death on Easter Sunday.

Wolfe noted that Mother Angelica had instructed her nuns to do everything to keep her alive, no matter how much she suffered, because every day she suffered, she suffered for God.

“Most of us would not think that way,” Wolfe said. “We would think, ‘Get me out of here…’ What’s taken out of that picture is the love of God.”

Mother Angelica wanted each day to be “one more act of suffering to God,” Wolfe said.

“This is the greatest power on earth, the love of God that comes to us in Christ Jesus our Lord,” Wolfe said. “This was something that Mother understood. She wanted to love Him in return. That was her whole life.”

Wolfe then described how Mother Angelica went into her death throes on Good Friday.

“It was on Good Friday that I heard form one of the caregivers who was helping Mother, as well as one of the sisters,” Wolfe said. “Mother began to cry out early in the morning from the pain that she was having. She had a fracture in her bones because of the length of time she had been bedridden. They said you could hear it down the hallways, that she was crying out on Good Friday from what she was going through. These two people said to me she has excruciating pain. Well, do you know where that word excruciating comes from? Ex, from, cruce, from the cross. Excruciating pain.”

“Her whole life really was colored with suffering,” Wolfe said. “We don’t think of her as someone who was downcast in her suffering but gave us courage in our own sufferings.”

After the 3 o’clock hour arrived on Good Friday she was more calm, she was more peaceful,” Wolfe said. “On Holy Saturday, I also visited. I had this desire to thank her. We have benefited by her witness, her teaching.”

Wolfe left Mother Angelica’s side to officiate the Easter vigil on Saturday night in the chapel at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Several hundred people attended. “We had a beautiful Easter vigil,” Wolfe said. “At 5:30 in the morning, Mother Delores called me and said Mother was really struggling, she wasn’t doing very well. She wanted me to come over. I went over there, the sisters were already there.”

That’s when preparations for her death began with the last rites, he said.

“I anointed her, did the litany for the dying, **gave her the apostolic pardon **that the church grants to someone who is dying, and the sisters prayed their divine office around her bed - the morning prayers.”

Later that morning she received her last holy communion, called Viaticum when the consecrated bread and wine is given as part of last rites.

“At 10:30 Father Paschal offered Mass in her room and she received the precious blood, Viaticum, the food for her journey,” Wolfe said. “The precious blood by which we have been saved. All of us have been saved by the precious blood of Jesus…, a drop or two of the precious blood, into her mouth.”

Simply amazing her love of Christ and suffering, and what a beautiful death. I wish more priests knew about and administered the Apostolic Pardon.

I don’t know if the forum allows link to this Mother Angelica oldie but goodie - when she chastizes World Youth Day in Denver blasphemously portraying Jesus as a woman. She spoke unambigously and truthfully in defense of the truths of the Catholic Church. We can honor her best by not neglecting to pray for the repose of her soul. May her memory be eternal! youtu.be/oCvX94US7SY
I’m hoping that you did not mean this to sound like the way it came out. She actually praised many things about World Youth Day and recognized the hunger of the young people to know and love their Catholic Faith better. See 10:48 into the link you posted. What she “chastises” was the injection of a mime that infiltrated into this beautiful event, which included a female portraying the role of Jesus. Let’s be clear, Mother Angelica did not chastise World Youth Day in Denver.

How she will be missed! She was there for me through such difficult times. Her passing has brought me back to the Church. Like St. Therese, she is showering the world with roses! As was said when Pope Saint John Paul II passed, “Santo Subito!”:signofcross:

Sorry if I misled anyone else that Mother was criticizing WYD. Exactly as Zab says -she was horrified that a lady portrayed Jesus in the Stations of the Cross.
This is important episode to watch because immediately after this aired in 1993, she and her nuns changed their habits. She explained how for 30 years we Catholics have kept silent as “those who should know better” have misrepresented Vatican Council II and caused tiny cracks to create holes intended to destroy the Church. She says how tired she is of the liberal Church in America: the inclusive language, the earth spirituality, the witchcraft, the centering prayers, the enneagrams, etc… She says she plans to make a statement - that the collar on her habit meant to appeal to the modern world will now be more traditional. She says we’ve hidden under bushels too long and have been obedient to a destructive force. No longer! She makes it clear that she will obey the Church, not the hidden agenda some in the Church are attempting to force.
May Mother Angelica pray for our strength to dare to contradict the deceptive forces seeking to destroy the Church today!

I watched the funeral yesterday and boy was I confused. Was it a TLM, Novus Ordo, or a mixture of both? A mixture of English and Latin. But my favorite part was the nusic. A lot of it came from Faure’s Reqiuem beautiful. My college accapella choir took it on tour, and I still remember a lot of it.

Mass was Novus Ordo -ad orientem- priest and people facing the Orient or east: the direction from which Christ will return at the Second Coming. Any NO Mass is allowed to be thus oriented. Latin was always to be retained and given priority in Novus Ordo Missa and that is how Mother preferred. Agree, choir was outstanding! Drew my thoughts towards heaven.

What you saw was much closer to the directions of Sacrosanctum Concillium.

I must find it online. I’ve never seen a true Vatican 2 mass.
The daily televised Mass from EWTN does a very good job of including Latin and chant within the Ordinary Form. I thought the Mass for Mother was beautiful.
As an aside, i have a St. Joseph Sunday Missal from 1966. It was one of the transition Missals published when everyone was trying to abide with the Coucils wishes. It retains most of the EF prayers while dropping some of the duplications. I feel it was much closer to Sacrosanctum Concillium than the Ordinary Form that was issued in 1969, but no one asked me:). If you get a chance, look at some of the transitional Missals from that time.

“There was a special grace at work in the death of a lady known to some of us, Mother Angelica, on Easter Day. She founded the worldwide Eternal Word Television Network starting with $200 and a garage as a studio. Our parish is fortunate that our church and rectory are used for some of its productions. While it is understandable that many were saddened that she left this world, I found it annoying that some “regretted” her “passing.” There is nothing regrettable about the death of a pious woman who accomplished much for the Lord, suffered grievous physical infirmities—including two strokes—for many years, and died on the Feast of the Resurrection. And as for “passing,” that is what gnostic sectaries like Christian Scientists do. Faithful Christians die and do not “pass,” and they pray for a happy death in the hope of eternal life.”
~Fr. George W. Rutler

I watched a lot of coverage of her funeral service. It was lovely, and she certainly was an icon. I lit a candle at church for her, as a small tribute to her, and talked about her with another lady. I’ve watched a few episodes of her, for old times’ sake.
