I’ve never seen “wine” offered at any Catholic Parish during Holy Communion. Not ever.
funny lol…you know what i mean the Most Sacred Body and Blood of Christ that to our blind eyes looks like wine
I’ve never seen “wine” offered at any Catholic Parish during Holy Communion. Not ever.
Oh, I had no idea you were referring to that. I’ve never seen that.Ummmm, the chalice is not “purified” directly after wine is poured into it in preparation for its use in the Mass.
No.RICK’S quote “Nothing confusing about their Masses. I just dislike their severity and they omit licit options which I appreciate.”
Rick–the reason so many people love the EWTN Mass is for the exact reason you don’t. We have seen the Roman Catholic Rite bastardized and trivialized to a point where, save for the transubstantiation, we could be at any Baptist or Evangelical gathering.
I think that’s up to the individual. I used to get real bent by people talking inside of the church. Now I focus on preparing myself and my relationship with God and His Son.The reverence I feel for the Eucharist, as the real presence of Christ, is all but forgotten in many parishes, especially on the wacky west coast (from which I hail) The decibel level of the socializing before and after Mass is reminiscent of a sporting event. I long for Sister Benedicta to come up in back of a couple of folks and smack them in the back of the head and remind them of whose presence they are in.
I cut a lot of slack for rambunctious toddlers and lackadaisical teens whom I believe are receiving the grace of faith, despite their best efforts to have fun or appear aloof. I cut no slack for the adults who discuss politics, baseball or the best fertilizers, within the church. That’s why most churches have coffee and donuts on the patio or in the hall.
EWTN is all business. The business is salvation.
When you say it’s up to the individual, I’m a bit mystified as to what you mean. In the extreme, that kind of sounds like our Catholic pro-abortion candidates who personally dislike abortion but believe every woman should have the right to terminate the life of her child. A Catholic church is not merely a building. It is the location of the Real Presence of Christ. Why shouldn’t guard and reverence it from triviality and secular pursuits?“First I never said I disliked EWTN Masses. I like them (as I stated earlier) but I also believe they could be better by being less severe. Allowing the chalice to the faithful and the kiss of peaced did not do what you suggest”.
Rick–perhaps you forgot your initial post, “I used to really enjoy the EWTN Masses but I don’t so much anymore. There is a certain severity and arrogance to them which I dislike.” I merely followed your thread of thought
“EWTN does many things quite well. It also does a few things rather poorly. There is no question in my mind that if EWTN offered the chalice, allowed the kiss of peace and trimmed-down their homilies that their Masses would be better.”
Again Rick, the reason I come to EWTN is because of the relevant and gospel-based, not arrogantly interpreted homilies, which have become commonplace in the “do your own thing” parishes and dioceses. As for the length, I’m amazed at the brevity, especially in relation to the often simplistic brilliance. For the majority who witness the EWTN Mass, I believe they are just as pleased to not have the Eucharist under both species as they are to not participate in the kiss of peace, during the proper of the Mass.

Actually you tried to add your own spin. There is much about EWTN Masses that I like a great deal.Rick–perhaps you forgot your initial post, “I used to really enjoy the EWTN Masses but I don’t so much anymore. I’m not interested in your guesses. What I do know is if the chalice were offered to the faithful and the kiss of peace allowed, I would like their Masses more.Again Rick, the reason I come to EWTN is because of the relevant and gospel-based, not arrogantly interpreted homilies, which have become commonplace in the “do your own thing” parishes and dioceses. Please don’t use inflammatory comments like that. The subject of abortion is not to be used in that manner. Do it again with me and I will simply ignore your posts. When you say it’s up to the individual, I’m a bit mystified as to what you mean. “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” Edmund Burke.
I see no severity nor arrogance, I see reverance and love.I used to really enjoy the EWTN Masses but I don’t so much anymore. There is a certain severity and arrogance to them which I dislike.
It would be nicer to me if they offered communion under both kinds and if they had the kiss of peace. Yes, I know both are optional, but their absence speaks volumes, and it’s nothing positive. Then again maybe they have to play to their audience.
I think the six altar candles and the large altar cross look more than a bit silly, but I think their heart is in the right place by trying to imitate our pope which is ultimately a positive. The homilies while good, are almost invariably padded and recursive and wandering and it shows. They are just too long.
In the end though, their masses are better than most I attend in real life.
Fair enough. First I happen to agree from personal experience with GIRM 281:RICK
OKAY all i want to know NOW is why would you like it more if it offered the chalice and gave the sign of peace???
I do, but only after viewing Masses celebrated by visiting priests/bishop on EWTN. Much better.I see no severity nor arrogance, I see reverance and love.
I already send them a check – right between my DSL and satellite TV bills.Perhaps since they are fully funded by viewers, you could send them a nice amount each month and they could afford to offer the Precious Blood to everyone? I think it would be great to do away with the sign of peace altogether, we didn’t have it when I was growing up and I still think its silly and unnecessary, especially in the part of Mass where it is introduced, our unity is in the Eucharistic, always disliked the way some people try to shake hands with everyone in every pew and across the aisles, the sign of peace with their fingers, etc…Actually we are suppose to only shake hands with those right around us and do it quietly and reverently. So why is it that you say it speaks volumns that they don’t? What do you mean by that?
It’s accurate.“They have to play to their audience”?? That really sounds out of place.
I wish they would watch Fr. John Corapi.I love their candles, their crusifix and the homilies, I find myself praying that some Priests would watch EWTN while preparing their own homilies.
They aren’t.Isn’ t it sad that there Masses are still better, in spite of all your complaints, then the one’s you attend in person?
Fair enough. First I happen to agree from personal experience with GIRM 281:Rick…as i can see you disagree with most people here…can we agree then that the masses at EWTN are reverand…???
GIRM 281. Holy Communion has a fuller form as a sign when it is distributed under both kinds. For in this form the sign of the eucharistic banquet is more clearly evident and clear expression is given to the divine will by which the new and eternal Covenant is ratified in the Blood of the Lord, as also the relationship between the Eucharistic banquet and the eschatological banquet in the Father’s Kingdom.rick im sorry…of course i acknowledged you answer…you like it and you supported why you like i can understand that…like i said in a previous post somewhere i sometimes like getting the chalice but if i don’t i feel the same…
Firstly I’m really sorry if i offend anyone but…
I think that people who don’t like the EWTN mass is just the effect of the abuse that people see everyday and think its normal…people are confused when they see reverance to the blessed sacrament
and why do people even want the wine…doesn’t the church say the host is the body and blood and the wine is the body and blood i mean yes sometimes i like to receive the wine if offered but if don’t i feel equally feed (spiritually) …anyway
The mass offered on EWTN although not the best (in my opinion) it still is very well celebrated

Rickwood, you asked me how I got the idea of the Masses that you attend, um, look above at what I bolded. Thats where I got that idea.I used to really enjoy the EWTN Masses but I don’t so much anymore. There is a certain severity and arrogance to them which I dislike.
