Are you sure about this? Please provide a link from an official Vatican site that shows that they have approved of the translation of the Mass here in America. I have found many letters from the Vatican reprimanding the ICEL and the American Bishops for their faulty translation of the Mass but I have not come across any saying that they now approve of the translation we are using. The last piece of correspondence that I read from the Vatican on this matter stated that they were still waiting for an accurate translation.

I wonder what language a country occupied by Rome would have to speak? I mean yes, they were Hebrews, but the NT Books were mostly written in Greeek which means there would have been one translation from Aramaic. but I am pretty sure, since english didn’t exist that even Jesus and the Apostles spoke Latin I mean their country was occupied after all. So it is very possible Jesus may have done the Last Supper in Latin. He could have done it in Greek, or Aramaic or Hebrew as well. It’s all speculation.

Some possibilities are more likely than others - why would He speak the language of the occupying force ? There would be no more reason for Him or his contemporaries to do that - least of all, at what seems to have been a Passover seder or something similar to it - than for Jews in Nazi Germany to pray the *Shemoneh Esreh *in German.​

Latin was not the everyday speech of Judaea - not even in “Galilee of the Gentiles”. And certainly not in the liturgy.

In addition, the Greek behind the NT traditions of the “words of institution” in the Gospels & 1 Corinthians 11, if compared, points to an Aramaic source. And explain how “many” can mean “all” as well. IOW, the Gospel tradition is the best reason for the translation - the post-apostolic tradition of the liturgy is secondary; we must go back behind the Christian liturgies of the post-apostolic period, to the words of Jesus, whenever possible - and it seems that we can, in this matter 🙂 ##
The point of the discussion is in the tradition of the Church, the words were “pro multis” which was translated to “for many” until 1960’s where it was translated “for all” which would be “pro omnibus”

Did EWTN screw up? Nope, they were reading the Mass from the currently approved translation. With that being said, we know where the screw up lies. ICEL and Vatican II.

I understand the point you are trying to make. And many outstanding priests agree with you.
But actually in Latin, multis can be translated faithfully either way, ‘many’ or ‘all’.

BTW the “jackass joke” was really, really lame. If EWTN is going to translate the Canon they had better do it correctly. These aren’t some random words that are being minced, this is THE CANON OF THE MASS. Not to mention the very words of consecration which have a significance beyone compare. EWTN better be able to get them right.

Get a CD-ROM of Scripture and just try to say the passages as they are read aloud to you without pausing the recording. Now try to get Scripture in another language and try to convert it to English at the same time you are trying to keep up with what is said. Very difficult indeed.

Give the translator a break. The CIA has thousands of translators picking apart documents everyday and they can’t allways agree on everything, and they spend days on each sentance when needed.

Give live TV translator a break. They do their best as do we.

Especially when the person on the TV is using the approved translation of the Church as is the case here.
