Let me begin with a sort of run-down of what happened from day 1.

I was dating someone I’ll call “K”. While K and I never got to the point where we said, “I love you”, we were pretty close and I really liked him. We communicated every day, even while I was overseas on a school trip, until I returned, when he ghosted me. I was crestfallen.

I found another man, “J”, online, but only half-heartedly agreed to meet him, as number one, he listed his religion as “atheist”, but also because I was still hung up on K. When I finally met J, we stayed up until two in the morning and the restaurant/bar we were at ordered us to leave because we just couldn’t stop finding things to talk about. Never before had I felt such a connection with someone. We were pretty much inseparable from that point on. When religion came up, I shared my points of view, and he said he’d never met a Christian like me before and listened to what I had to say and seemed interested. He never had a problem with me going to church or Bible study and even met my priest.

It didn’t take long for us to fall completely in love. I’d never been happier and neither had he. We were that disgusting couple that even was affectionate in public, shamelessly. He liked my family and I liked his. We talked of marriage as though it was inevitable.

Once, early on, he said to me, “I once thought I wanted to be a woman, but now I know that I’m just really in touch with my feminine side.” No problem! That was back when he was at his happiest.

Then he got a promotion at his job that he pretty quickly discovered he hated. He went from happy and carefree to stressed and anxious and snippy. While he was never mean or hurtful towards me, he was irritable. He also got withdrawn. Still, he would randomly call me to tell me he loved me and ended every conversation with “I love you”.

Then one night, while slightly drunk, he told me he wanted to be a woman. While it broke my heart, I somewhat chalked it up to his being drunk and also the stress he was under. However, within the span of a week, he bought himself female clothes - dresses and tights - and created a new Facebook profile of himself as a woman. He started going out in the dress and outfit. To say I am heartbroken and devastated is an understatement.

He told me more. His transsexualism was odd: He never had a problem with his body or appearance, at least until he decided he was trans, but seemed to revolve around the fact that he considered himself “submissive” compared to a man’s traditional gender role. He also revealed that he was subjected to sexual abuse as a child at the hands of his grandfather, who enforced very strict gender roles and called him names, which he admitted could play a role in what he’s experiencing right now.

I encouraged him to go to therapy. He said I’d have to go with him because he couldn’t talk about the abuse with a stranger. I agreed to go. The first appointment was an intake appointment when they asked a lot of questions in order to match him with the best therapist/counselor for his situation. I had to tell the interviewer about the abuse. They’re supposed to call back sometime this week.

In the meantime, I continue to see him as a friend. He says he feels confused about what he wants. He says he primarily identifies as his female alter ego right now, but doesn’t go out as “her” unless he’s playing a music show or seeing friends at a restaurant or bar in the evening. He doesn’t know if these feelings are permanent. In fact he said that he felt uncomfortable creating the female Facebook profile because it gave what he’s feeling and doing a level of permanence which he’s not sure is going to stick around.

I asked him if he’d continue cross-dressing if the therapist told him to stop or if the antidepressants they’ll probably put him on (he’s definitely depressed and anxious, also suffers from panic attacks and experiential avoidance) cause those feelings to stop, as they sometimes do. He said he’d stop in those circumstances. Even though he’s cross-dressed twice in the past week, and says that for the time being he “feels mostly female”, he still wants to continue with therapy and considers it a possibility that this is all caused by the abuse at the hands of his grandfather. He’s willing to deal with that in therapy, and is aware that it’s going to take some time - possibly years.

I admit that I still love him. I’m anxious to see how this will work out. I feel conflicted - on the one hand, I feel that as a Godly person, I should be there for him while he works through these feelings and encourage him to move forward, AWAY from transsexualism in as gentle and loving a manner as I can. On the other, I have numerous people telling me to just drop him because he’s never going to get better.

I admit I feel some anger towards God right now. When K ghosted me, I was mad enough. But once I met J, I reasoned that first off, God wanted us to be together because we were both so, so happy, and secondly, I was going to lead J to Christ - not overnight, but as a good and righteous partner. Since we were both so happy and J was opening up to my faith, I felt this was an entirely reasonable conclusion. To have the rug ripped out from underneath me, and in such an absurd way, is tearing me apart.

I have to ask, Why would God make us both unhappy and have J go down a path of perdition rather than have us stay together and work towards his salvation? It doesn’t make sense.

As someone who is trying to overcome strong feelings for a guy that I fear will never pursue me, I get what you mean when you ask why God would bring the two of you together, only to have it blow up and cause so much unhappiness. Sometimes, being angry at Him happens because we don’t understand what He’s doing in our lives. But from what I can tell you from my own experience with heartbreak, is that maybe God brought the two of you together because He realized J would need you more than anything else to help him get through this dark time in his life. Why he had to suffer at the hands of his grandfather is a mystery, other than the fact that we all have Free Will and each of us has our own crosses to bear. I know that with the guy I have feelings for right now, though it hurts worst than most physical pain, I pray for him daily and I’ve never prayed so hard for someone’s well-being and spiritual victory. Maybe that’s why I developed feelings for him, maybe I’m the key to his struggles. Isn’t true love helping someone make it to Heaven in the end?
My advice would be to keep on praying for J and offering sacrifice for him, fasting is great! Some demons can only be driven out by fasting…and never give up on God, He’s got you in this, even if the waters ahead do seem murky.
I will keep the two of you in my prayers. :gopray:

I’d be careful about imposing marital obligations on yourself when you aren’t married. What I mean is, you have not made any vows to each other, to “be true to [each other] in good times and bad, in sickness and health, for richer or poorer all the days of your life”. There are a ton of alarms going off in the back of my mind with this situation, so I just felt I should offer my 2 cents worth of advice. Concern for him and helping him can still be done as a friend and not a girlfriend/fiancee. There’s just a lot of baggage here that would end up making you miserable in the end (if I read it right).

Prayers going out your way, and his.

This is one post/thread that I think/feel I am absolutely/totally unqualified to respond to. I think a number of other CAF members probably feel the same.

This is a situation that belongs completely in the hands of mental health professionals and good spiritual advisors. Talking with a priest or two is probably a better idea than random posters with no expertise in this area.

As an above poster said, I will keep you in my prayers. Good luck.

Shalom

We are definitely “just friends” at this point. I don’t know what the future holds, but at this point we are friendly but not romantic.

Sincerest Prayers:
Our Father who art in heaven…
Hail Mary, full of grace… Hail Mary, full of grace… Hail Mary, full of grace…
Glory Be to the Father…
Amen…

Praying for you and J. God bless you with the ability to understand what your role should be in J’s life and God bless J with the ability to resolve the issues that have brought him to this point in his life.

Praying for you and J.

Hail Mary,
Full of grace,
The Lord is with Thee.
Blessed art Thou amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb,
Jesus
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
Now and at the hour of death,
Amen

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Praying for all in this situation…

PRAYER TO ST. MARCELLIN CHAMPAGANT

St. Marcellin Champagant, you felt a personal call by God to found a religious community of Brothers that would bring the message of Jesus’ love to neglected young people. Your memories of the school teacher who beat the students, and your own recollections of academic struggles were the basis of your educational philosophy: “to educate children you must love them and love them all equally.” You started the Marist brothers after discerning God’s will for your life. Your love of Jesus and Mary should inspire us to give all of ourselves to them as you did.

St. Marcellin, I lift up to you today the intentions of all those who have asked for prayers on this forum. On this your feast day into eternal life, may you take these intentions into your heart and present them to Jesus and Mary with your noted fervor and charity. May we also strive to follow God’s will in our own lives and thus know the inner peace and contentment that comes to those who seek the Kingdom above all things. We ask this in Jesus’s Name. Amen.

St. Marcellin Champagant, pray for us!

Just found out that one of his friends took her own life last night. This isn’t helping his mental state. Please keep praying.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy, hear and answer me. Amen

I visited him last night as he was currently alone regarding this recent tragedy (the suicide). He quickly shut some doors in his apartment - obviously there are some things he did not want me to see. 😦

He seems to be drinking more. Like, he went out last night drinking, after I left. It seems all his supportive “friends” (who support his cross-dressing) just do so in order to take him out drinking. It’s so sad. I don’t know if he’s able to connect his misery to his cross-dressing.

We were expecting a call from the counselor’s office by now, to schedule his first “real” appointment, but we haven’t heard anything. I called today and had to leave a voicemail. They did not call back yet.

I love him, although now in a more compassionate than romantic way. And I want to help him but it’s like this stupid counselor’s office is standing in the way by dragging their feet. He was really looking forward to his next therapy appointment, too.

Continued prayers for both of you.

So sorry for the difficulty with the counselors office.

Recently St. Rita’s feast day was celebrated. She is not only the patron saint of 'difficult marriages and parents but of impossible cases. May 22nd. I suggest asking her to help your friend.
