Exclusive: Carson claimed West Point 'scholarship' but never applied

Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson on Friday conceded that he never applied nor was granted admission to West Point and attempted to recast his previous claims of a full scholarship to the military academy — despite numerous public and written statements to the contrary over the last few decades.

West Point has occupied a central place in Carson’s personal story for years. According to a tale told in his book, “Gifted Hands,” the then-17 year old was introduced in 1969 to Gen. William Westmoreland, who had just ended his command of U.S. forces in Vietnam, and the two dined together. That meeting, according to Carson’s telling, was followed by the offer of a “full scholarship” to the military academy.

If people perceive that Dr Ben Carson is being attacked by the media, that could help him in the polls, but it may depend on how truthful he has been, and whether they believe Dr Ben Carson and his campaign’s side of the story. I’ve seen various conservative outlets hitting back at the Politico piece.

He should be discredited.

Its a lie that was too easy to check and being he didn’t know that, shows a deficiency in his not only in character, but also his ability to grasp the political arena he’s playing in.

Is it possible he was told he could receive a scholarship if he applied, but declined to apply?
 
So Carson is trying to tap dance around the lie.

You can bet his opponents will do the research to verify whether he in fact lied or not.

Yes, it is so easy to check. And impossible to recover from, IMO.

I would think his opponents are behind uncovering the situation in the first place.

Trump will get his turn. The Clinton machine won’t overlook him. They’ll get all of them in time.

Carson’s statement was unfortunate. It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that Westmoreland told him he was a “shoo-in” for admission and that it was free. And he probably would have been if Carson had applied with Westmoreland’s endorsement.

Remembering when I applied to a Jesuit college that I could not possibly afford without a “full ride” scholarship. I wouldn’t have even applied had the debate coach from the “little brother” high school of that college not suggested that I apply. He was going to go to the college faculty the following year. I actually didn’t know for sure I had it until I showed up. But the circumstances were such that I figured it was a deal. The college didn’t even have scholarships for debate, but somehow he found one of a different sort.

A similar thing happened when I applied for graduate school. One man from the graduate school encouraged me to apply for a scholarship. For me, it was either grad school or USAF jet fighter training. The man became the dean the next year. In between I got the scholarship.

Having the right backer can mean everything.

I agree. Since the Clinton Foundation gives very little to actual charity, it has plenty of money to spend on researchers and plenty of media people to give them a voice. And we haven’t even seen the smallest part of it yet, I’m sure.

And the Clinton Foundation was just exposed in the media a day ago, for inappropriate use of funds.

So, get the Clinton’s name off the front page headlines and network news lead ins with this.

But regardless, the proof that Carson made the statement is out there and his staff trying to tap dance around it is not looking good.

This is his own fault. He said he was offered a scholarship to West Point and he turned it down. It turns out someone offered to help him seek an appointment. There’s a big difference in this recollection. He was never so close that he could turn down West Point.

Oh, it will hurt him. No question about it. But when you really look at it, he failed to make a proper distinction in a subject regarding which he probably knew little of the details as to how West Point admission works. But, granted, he should have checked it all out before writing about it.

The slightest defect in telling your story can bite your head off, unless you’re a Clinton.
 
Everyone at a service academy gets a full ride scholarship - it’s the way service academy’s work. I have no doubt if he met Westmoreland he was offered an admission. He was a scholar, articulate, yes, and black, at a time the service academy’s were trying to improve their racial mix, especially the Army.

I am not guessing, or basing it on something I heard from a guy who knows a guy. I was a 1979 graduate of Annapolis (Navy). Yep, full ride scholarship. Though free is hardly what I would call it, 5 years service committment after graduation… Applied through my congressman, accepted. Several classmates received admissions thru Admirals, so his story is plausable.
 
A friend’s son received an appointment to Annapolis. Believe me when I say that he was fully aware what that entailed before he even began the admittance procedure. And he was fully informed of all the ramifications every step of the way.

Between this, the pyramid debacle, the tax plan that won’t work, and the health care plan he’s already scuttled and replaced with an even more complicated and unworkable one, I have absolutely no doubt Dr. Carson has very little idea of what is involved in the complexities of running for office, let alone governing.
 
Some appear intelligent
Some converse as being intelligent
Some have certificates verifying intellegence
And yet…

Struggle with humanitarian understaning
