As part of his autism, Anthony is picky about what he eats, so the Diocese wanted him to practice taking the wafer, the Eucharist.
I don’t follow. Is he having issues taking the larger pieces? He did, but according to Shaw, the Diocese told her Anthony’s effort wasn’t good enough. "He took the Eucharist, but now it’s the piece has to be bigger. Well, what’s going to be after that? " Shaw said. “Even the pope has said we need to make special exceptions for children with special needs.”
But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
Then you must not have read the story very carefully. That has to be the weakest accusation of “discrimination” I have ever heard. I don’t see anything wrong with what the diocese is doing here.
This exactly. The article seems to leave out specifics. It would be better to have a more complete presentation of the facts. There’s not enough information to make a call as to who is out of line here. Can the boy not take a larger host? Is the bishop or priest making the decision? Is the boy just unwilling to take a larger host? Are his guardians being unreasonable?
Hard to say from the information presented in this article.![]()

Agreed. The article is a little disjointed so it’s unclear what they mean by saying “the piece has to be bigger.” In the US the people’s communion bread is pretty much standardized (1 1/8 - 1 3/8 inch) and it’s unusual for a parish to have different sizes. The only “bigger piece” I can think of is the priest’s host used in the fractioning rite. This exactly. The article seems to leave out specifics. Well, but then it wouldn’t be an anti-Catholic story now, would it?This exactly. The article seems to leave out specifics. It would be better to have a more complete presentation of the facts.
Perhaps he has. All we have to go on is a guardian screaming discrimination but proving little or no information on what the discrimination is.It is certainly licit for people with problems swallowing to be given a fraction of a host. Why can this boy not receive the same treatment?
Now, there you go. Trying to get the news media to give all the facts. Might as well just ask them to herd cats.It would be better to have a more complete presentation of the facts.
