This is unfortunate. The Church is supposed to welcome all. God created the boy that way.

That has to be the weakest accusation of “discrimination” I have ever heard. I don’t see anything wrong with what the diocese is doing here.

As part of his autism, Anthony is picky about what he eats, so the Diocese wanted him to practice taking the wafer, the Eucharist.
He did, but according to Shaw, the Diocese told her Anthony’s effort wasn’t good enough. "He took the Eucharist, but now it’s the piece has to be bigger. Well, what’s going to be after that? " Shaw said. “Even the pope has said we need to make special exceptions for children with special needs.”
I don’t follow. Is he having issues taking the larger pieces?

It is certainly licit for people with problems swallowing to be given a fraction of a host. Why can this boy not receive the same treatment?
But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

Then you must not have read the story very carefully.

There’s not enough information to make a call as to who is out of line here. Can the boy not take a larger host? Is the bishop or priest making the decision? Is the boy just unwilling to take a larger host? Are his guardians being unreasonable?

Hard to say from the information presented in this article.🤷

This exactly. The article seems to leave out specifics. It would be better to have a more complete presentation of the facts.

Agreed. The article is a little disjointed so it’s unclear what they mean by saying “the piece has to be bigger.” In the US the people’s communion bread is pretty much standardized (1 1/8 - 1 3/8 inch) and it’s unusual for a parish to have different sizes. The only “bigger piece” I can think of is the priest’s host used in the fractioning rite.

Is the family saying he should get the host used in the fractioning rite? In otherwords is the kids saying he has to get the largest host? If so what happens when the larger 5 1/2 or even 9 inch host is used. Will he demand that one also? On the otherhand is he saying that it isn’t enough “food” and he needs more? That implies that there is a serious difficulty in distinguishing that the Eucharist is not simply food.

I guess the question is what accommodations are his guardians asking for?

Well, but then it wouldn’t be an anti-Catholic story now, would it? 😉
Surely there are “great chunks” of the story missing.
Journalism is “pin” these days.
I take everything I read with a grain of salt. 🤷

Perhaps he has. All we have to go on is a guardian screaming discrimination but proving little or no information on what the discrimination is.

Now, there you go. Trying to get the news media to give all the facts. Might as well just ask them to herd cats.

On second thought, no, it’s way more difficult than that. Cats can be herded quite effectively with several cans of canned cat food or soft cat treats.
