Horrific! Do we know the man’s motivation yet?

Obviously, if this man was a Catholic, he’s automatically excommunicated.

And even if he’s not Catholic, he’s in deep trouble with our Lord.

We should all pray that His Excellency is healed not just physically, but also mentally. An attack like this can really shake a person to their core.

May The Holy Spirit grant His Excellency with fortitude & courage to continue preaching the Good News of Jesus Christ; and please Lord grant your Bishop healing and comfort after such an attack. Amen.

Why are there cops in full uniform at church during mass?:confused::confused:

In this shocking video, a bishop in the middle of a prayer during mass is struck in the face and falls down as the worshippers cry out in horror. The police are shown immediately swarming over the assailant. A bishop in Newark, USA, he was taken to the hospital to be checked but had no serious injury.
UPDATE:

The auxiliary bishop who was attacked during Mass Saturday is doing well and addressed a congregation on Sunday to assure them he was fine, according to a spokesman for the Archdiocese of Newark. Read more here…

Maybe, because they are Catholics? In blue collar, Catholic communities, it’s not uncommon for Catholics to attend daily Mass in their work clothes/uniforms.

Never in my life, at any parish I’ve gone to. Ever. Plainclothes, yes. In uniform with guns, no. That’s why its weird to me. Perhaps its a city thing, even at that I’ve been many times to city parishes, and still never saw cops in uniform there.

It was a memorial Mass; the police may have been expecting trouble and were on top of it. A speedy recovery for our dear bishop. :highprayer:
Why would anyone be against Roberto Clemente? The police were most likely either devout Catholics and/or fans of Roberto Clemente; attending Mass before their patrol.

The Essex County Sheriff’s Department (not the Newark PD) is basically diagonal across the street from the Cathedral Basilica.

At least 4 cops I saw in uniform are wearing the Essex County Sheriff’s department badge & uniform.

So considering the station is basically across the street, it’s not weird for Catholic cops to attend Mass in uniform.

What’s weird is (1) why would this guy punch the Auxiliary Bishop and (2) why do that with so many cops attending Mass?

Most of the cops I have seen at Mass they have their sidearms with them but are generally plainclothes. You have to remember, they have to be ready for duty at any time

Well, that makes sense. A false sense of security. Poor bishop. Someone should have stopped the attacker before he reached the bishop.

Yes and no.

When dealing with individuals that are mentally unstable or drunk/high rushing up to them can often cause a bigger problem than slowly corralling them.

If some nut job approached me while I was doing the opening prayer I’d probably do what the Bishop did and basically ignore him until I was done and then try to slowly and gently talk him out of the area while the readings are going on.
