Editorial by Illinois Appellate Judge Sheila O’Brien:

“Would someone in Rome formally excommunicate me, please? I want to be excommunicated by the Roman Catholic Church because walking away will break my heart.”

“But, the headlines continue — more pedophilia, more stonewalling by the bishops, more “norms” from Rome protecting perpetrators. Now, it is a “crime” of the church to attempt to ordain people like Mother Teresa or St. Teresa of Avila — women. And, the hierarchy, who have arguably hidden crimes and criminals, who will not open the books so we can see where our money has gone and who always claim the moral high ground, have grouped ordaining women with pedophilia.”

I don’t think I can excommunicate you, you should probably see a priest or something for that kind of thing

I think the folks in the Traditional Catholicism section are authorized to excommunicate you; just ask 'em where’s the nearest Clown Mass and you’ll be out in no time 🙂

Harsh, but made me chuckle

Yeah I read this myself. Funny thing was that I was considering posting it here…

How long till she’s nominated for the Supreme Court? Heaven help us. Please, Lord, don’t let any more justices retire!

To state such as these as “facts”, she has to be a daisy of a judge. Surely, she knows the difference between inflamed speculation and facts???

Does the judge tax evaders and rapists morally equivalent when she sentences them both to jail time?

I am curious how justices are elected in Illinois. The bio indicates she was elected to the Appellate in 1994. Does that mean she does not stand for regular elections (like they do in Texas).

Does she just hold this post for life or is there some sort of reconfirmation vote taken? Anybody from Illinois that can answer this.

From the view point of a state where justices do stand for regular elections, no appellate justice would be writing any editorials like this. 👍

I feel your pain. I’ve distanced myself from the Church. I used to be deeply involved, but now I just fulfill my mass obligation.

Those traditionalist Catholics–lay people, priests, and bishops–have been successful in driving me away. I’m just too tired of fighting. I know I’m not welcome. When I look at the church heirarchy, I don’t see Christ–just arrogance, obstinancy and defensiveness. I don’t even care anymore. I haven’t posted in a long time and I won’t be back. I just got bored today and found this post.

If it’s anything like Idaho, even though judges are, technically, elected and have to stand for re-election, what happens is that the departing judge will retire mid-term, let the governor appoint someone new, get “elected” unopposed term-after-term, retire mid-term when he/she is ready, to start the cycle anew. Once in a while there is a challenge, but the incumbent judge is usually re-elected by a comfortable margin (not always, but usually).

Good grief, Judge.
I want to be excommunicated by the Roman Catholic Church because walking away will break my heart.
That means you still have hope, Judge.
"But, the headlines continue — more pedophilia,
Really? Haven’t heard anything since April…of course, the media has decided to stretch that out for several months.
more stonewalling by the bishops,
Individual bishop’s actions do not necessarily reflect the Church’s views.
more “norms” from Rome protecting perpetrators.
To the extent that the accused is protected in name and privacy, yes. Does Rome protect them from legal actions? No.
Now, it is a “crime” of the church to attempt to ordain people like Mother Teresa or St. Teresa of Avila — women.
It’s a crime to ordain women like you, Judge.
St. Teresa and Mother Teresa knew their place.
And, the hierarchy, who have arguably hidden crimes and criminals,
Key word: arguably. I can argue that, despite individual bishops’ actions regarding “shifting” the accused to other parishes, the Church and her hierarchy has done their best they can to stop such crimes.
who will not open the books so we can see where our money has gone and who always claim the moral high ground,
Just decided to throw that in there, huh Judge? Another notch in your belt, I suppose? I haven’t heard this accusation before.
have grouped ordaining women with pedophilia.
The U.S. will sentence both a murderer and a “drug kingpin” to life imprisonment. Does that mean that we hold these two crimes as equal in level of atrocity? Of course not!

I believe they serve a 10 yr term, at which point there is a vote on whether or not to retain them. She was first elected in 1994 so I assume she was retained in 2004 and would be up for another vote for retention around 2014.

does she know women cannot be a pope? we already have a pope, he is called BXVI.

she is throwing stones in the wrong direction.

I was going to say “don’t you mean lack thereof”, but then I remembered that we’re not talking about Canadian judges.
