Re; Hagia Sophia # 37
The Guardian Newspaper of July 23 1999 and the Washington post of July 24th both state that the ashes were scattered at sea ! The washingon post is very specific about it.
There is also reported to exist a film of it.
Its past and done. Its only use is as an example of the diference in treatment that the rich often get in the church.

Mark Danich:
Excommunication of any Catholic is really stupid. Bishops and Priests are supposed to bring individuals into the Catholic Church not drive them away. :
Sometimes you need to do this to give the person a “wake-up call” to the teachings of the Church. Excommunication is not permanent for those who repent and renounce their views and actions that are contrary and detrimental to the Church.

Such a knee-jerk reaction does no justice whatsoever to the rationale of excommunication, especially because the basic policy was set down by Christ in Mt 18.

Would any potential convert to the Church give up after reading all of these posts? :tsktsk: :bigyikes:

In my professional capacity I worked on numerous occasions with a priest who was one of the main “point” Catholic spokespersons at the times of the Kennedy funerals. He provided interviews locally, nationally and internationally to media about Catholic funeral questions during that time and he was adamant that they were buried according to the proper protocols of the church. I believed then as I do now, that he was in a position to KNOW not speculate, and would not have answered as he did without having his facts checked and confirmed.

I suspect that the Guardian and the Washington Post being secular media find no difference between a container with ashes and scattering ashes at sea and probably did not realize that in so stating they were indicating that Catholic rituals had not been properly followed. Media were kept so far from the site of the burial that I don’t believe any “film” which would indicate much of anything exists taken from a “close view”. In cases such as this reporters have a tendency to quote each other rather than fact find.

I submit for your further reflection an excerpt from a Chicago Catholic newspaper which is only one of many who covered this question in the days that followed that particular funeral.

Quarterly News from SS. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Parish

Catholics & Cremation
Reprinted, January 2000, Archdiocese of Chicago: Catholic Cemeteries and
Liturgy Training Publications

Having such a place is an important part of
the mourning and grieving process that
makes us human beings.
Then why were the ashes of John F.
Kennedy, Jr., and Carolyn Bessette
Kennedy and Lauren Bessette
scattered at sea?
They weren’t. They were buried at sea, in
urns, according to Catholic custom. The
press in some instances was unfamiliar with
Catholic ritual requirements and used the
poetic, and in this case imprecise, term of
scattering the ashes.
Can Catholics be buried at sea?
The Rite of Committal provides prayers to
be used at the grave, tomb or crematorium,
and also some for use in a burial at sea.

You are saying that one could be a good Catholic and a Good Nazi ?
We are talking about the S A , Waffen SS and the SS Troops in general.
Austria a 98% Catholic country produced more fanatical nazi’s than Germany.
One of the Reasons German army officers gave after the war for not overthrowing hitler was the Oath to him that they had taken. I recall that the Pope absolved Catholics in England of their Oath of allegiance to Elizabeth I
I know Hitler wasn’t a practicing Catholic,but. Mussolini I dont know,Italy was a very Catholic country.
It depends what you mean by “Nazi”. If you are referring to the fanatics, no you could not be both. If you are referring (as so many people do) to anyone who fought for Germany, yes they could be. Only a tiny minority of front line soldiers and officers (even in the Waffen SS) were party members.

You really can not say which country produced the majority of “fanatical” nazis. You commonly hear that about Austria just because Hitler was born there. There are not any statistics to back up or deny that claim.

I know I will probably be attacked for saying this by those who think they know history based on what they think they have heard or learned in school (as usual) but more than 30 years studying WWII has taught me that a lot of what we take as history is not true. One of the greatest misconceptions is the belief that the Waffen SS was nothing but a bunch of fanatical murderers. This is absolutely not true. The Waffen SS were front line soldiers that spent the entire war fighting along side of and under the command of the army. They had no love for Himmler and many other nazi leaders. Yes, there were atrocities commited by Waffen SS troops but the same can be said for every force that fought in the war including the U.S. Army. There were also many chivalrous acts on the part of the Waffen SS but you do not hear about them. The notion that the Waffen SS was a “criminal organisation”, a notion which paints all of it’s members with one brush, is guilt by association which is a concept that is abhorred by any decent society. I would go into more detail but we have already strayed to far off topic. If you are interested in any of this subject send me a PM.
