"*The decree will be made public in the coming days with which Benedict XVI has determined to lift the excommunications imposed on the four new bishops ordained by Archbishop Lefebvre in 1988. Back then, in addition to the four (Bernard Fellay, Alfonso de Gallareta, Tissier de Mallerais and Richard Williamson) had also been excommunicated Lefebvre himself and Brazilian Bishop De Castro Mayer who had participated in the ceremony.

…]

Now, with a truly magnanimous gesture, granting the request made by Fellay, Benedict XVI has decided to lift the excommunication. Excommunication that, it should be noted, has always only covered the consecrating bishops (Lefebvre and De Castro Mayer, both long gone) and the four consecrated, but never the Lefebvrist priests nor the faithful*."

Let us pray that the Bishops will respond with humility and be recived back into the fold.

Deo Gratias.

I hope it’s true, (if nothing else, it will put paid to the endless threads about SSPX in this forum), but keep in mind that NLM published this under the qualifier “rumor watch” although it does seem be gaining some steam.

I dont believe it. The Bishops and Lefebvre were clearly wrong, and I dont buy the “I thought it was necessary/emergencey blah blah blah.” I’ll believe it when I see it.

Canon Law has a subjective element. If the consecrating Bishops and those they consecrate believe honestly that there is a grave necessity to their actions, Canon Law makes clear that no excommunication is incurred.

The excommunications simply never happened, and the Pope is now set to acknowledge this.

If the excommunication is being lifted it means they were correct in the first place. You cannot lift something that never happened.

There will always be those that want it both ways and fail to see the illogical contradiction inherent in such a position.

This particular rumor has come and gone several times. While it would be wonderful news, one should be slow to believe things based on rumor, especially when it has already been declared and internal matter.

Even rumors can be self-fulfilling if there’s enough of them. It’s worth a shot.

That said, I don’t see anything on Fr. Z’s blog on this. I’m not surprised that they are a few doubting Thomases, though.

I have little doubt that if this happens it is due to the rosary campaign.

Edit: Fixed grammer mistake*

One other thought on this. I hope all will open their heart to papal infallibility with our current Pope if this is done as they have done so with Pope John Paul the II which has led to a great deal of zeal in their condemnation of the SSPX.

I know I know the argument. I am not sure if that is what Canon Law intends. Obviously the Pope didn’t agree. He certainly ruled that Lefebvre was clearly wrong. The “he honestly thought” argument is very subjective. How could anyone be excommunicated for consecrating Bishops(without Papal permission)? Is a Bishop(who consecrates another Bishop without Papal permission) going to say “Hey ya I know we don’t need this, but I am going to consecrate anyway even though I dont have the Pope’s permission?” HMMMMMMMMMMM-
BOTTOM LINE :THE POPE(JOHN PAUL II) SAID LEFEBVRE WAS WRONG AND I DONT SEE ANY REASON WHY HE WAS CORRECT. I mean the only argument you can make is he said he believed it was an emergency. I cant see it. If the Church had very few Bishops left then I could see it being an emergency. The Church had many Bishops. How could it be an emergency? Now, I know you are going to say it doesnt matter as long as Lefebvre believed it was an emergency. I get all that, but how do we really know what Lefebvre really believed? We don’t!! We can’t !!! We can only go by what the Pope said, and he said Lefebvre was clearly wrong. THEN HE SAID LEFEBVRE WAS EXCOMMUNICATED!! If ,and when, our current Holy Father overturns that, then I will change my mind. I seriously doubt Pope Benedict XVI will lift the excommunications!!! DOUBT IT!!!

Trust Me!!! Lefebvre Was Clearly Wrong!!! The Excommunications Will Not Be Lifted. Stop Giving Latria To A Disobedient French Archbishop!!!

Book It It Aint Gonna Happen!!

I know I’m going to get flack for this, but “technically” consecrating Bishops without the permission of the Pope is not in and of itself, a schismatic act (that is to say, it doesn’t automatically incur an excommunication).

I think the issue wasn’t the number of Bishops in the Church, but the number of Bishops in the Church that would have been willing to celebrate the Traditional Mass. Because Archbishop Lefebvre believed that Tradition was going to be lost, he mad the determination that there existed a state of emergency.

Whether you choose to agree with the fact that a true “state of emergency” existed or not, that’s fine. But I think its worth clearing up the fact that he didn’t simply consecrate Bishops randomly or without explanation.
