I had recently posted a topic called “A Story and a Calling”, and have been discerning the priesthood for the last couple years of my life. I met with my Diocese’s vocations director today and felt more “at home” than I think I ever have in a long time in my life. Granted, I am still discerning a possible vocation, but feel really called to the Diocesan priesthood. Now, in my previous thread, I had wrote how a friend of mine took her life. Now, she used to get caught up in cults and the like. Now, I’m not sure how many of you out there believe in devil possessions or the like (I’m not talking about Hollywood exorcisms), but I truly believe that they happen, and have always had a strong interest in studying the rite of exorcism, demonology, and witchcraft according to the Church.

I’d like to ask if there is any Catholic “orders” (groups, organizations, etc…) in the Church that study such things, train exorcists, or, in my case, just have questions about discerning the life of an exorcist. I know most exorcists are not “full-time” exorcists, and that is not what I feel called to do. But I know many exorcists are trained well in the human psyche, and know the differences between actual possessions and people who may be ill in some other fashion, and this has always really interested me. Ever since my friend took her life, I’ve always felt a certain “something” to occultist organizations that claim possessions and such, by “something” I don’t mean hate because I believe in loving your enemy no matter what, but a certain "need to do something to prevent future occultists from doing the same things.

Sure they happen. But I don’t think ordinary people should be much interested in the subject. This is something for the Bishops and their specialists. If I were you I would try to be interested in something more healthy and less dangerous. How about getting interested in Church history, that would do you some good later. 👍

If you do, indeed, have a vocation, pay attention to the basics of your vocation. If, and when you get to a seminary and study theology, you will be instructed in the Church’s teaching about exorcism. Until that time, you are well advised to avoid anything dealing with it because it is nothing to be dealt with casually. The evil one could very well cause you to lose your vocation!
As the prior respondant told you, you would do much better to study Church History, which, in itself, will give you some insight into the machinations of the evil one…and without endangering your soul.
 
My intuition is that if your spiritual directors / seminary instructors notice that you are interested in exorcism and want to be designated an exorcist, you will be the last person they choose. They will probably choose someone who shows very little interest in exorcism but displays holiness and dependability. If I were you I would never bring it up. If it is God’s will it will happen for you.

If you pray (ie. liturgy of the hours) and study your Bible you will have more than enough interaction with dark forces. One who searches it out generally is one who has not experienced it.

Just curious have you ever dabbled with the Occult, Ouji boards, summoning evil spirits etc.
 
The practice of “conversio” in daily life is an exorcism in and of itself.

Pray for great humility and pray for detachment from everything so the Adversary doesn’t have a hook to hang its hat on.

Develop a great devotion to Our Lady, St Joseph and St Michael and your own Angel Guardian.

Don’t forget the Poor Souls in Purgatory.

Pray in Latin. The Adversary hates it. The Vatican exorcist uses Latin.

Pray exorcism prayers during full moons and pagan holidays.

Continue in the diocesan priesthood route. I agree with the poster who says if you are attracted to the positon of exorcist, don’t mention it to your diocese.

Read accounts of Hell. There are plenty of stories on the net. There are some books printed on the subject. Baronius books reprinted a book which contained the old teachings of the church on exorcisms.

I agree with the previous posters about not mentioning it. It is a very sensitive and dangerous subject. Continue with the route to priesthood in general and if God wants you to be an exorcist He will let you know. The devil will grab at any chance of taking you away from God and just thinking about this sort of stuff tends to make people lower their spiritual defenses subconsciously.
