I’m new to the site and need some advice. I’ve been Catholic since birth, but only recently have developed a relationship with Jesus and started following Him. I still have a lot to learn, but as I get closer to Jesus, I’m having these experiences with evil that have never happened to me before. I get afraid, like a week before it happens, knowing it is coming. I fear not being able to handle it and/or getting frustrated to the point of giving up. It is like this darkness that comes over my entire life and distorts everything…so my thinking is negative, I withdraw from people, and become very sad and afraid. It feels like Jesus has abandoned me during these times…I know that isn’t true, but it feels that way at the time. It is hard to explain, but I’m wondering how others handle these times and how do you get through them?? I try to pray, but honestly don’t have the energy. Thanks for the advice 😉

Hello there:hug1:

First of all: That is so wonderful that you have been developing your relationship with Jesus!

What you describe sounds a bit like phases of depression… could that be?

I am sending a prayer…

Remeber, neslor617, you are a son of God.

The experience of evil is the first step towards Our Lord.

Being in state of grace, with no mortal sin waiting to be confessed, you have to fear nothing since God is your Father and constantly cares for you.

He didn’t forgive His only Son just to forgive you and me as much times as we may need it. So you may feel relieved if you confess once or twice every month.

You do not have to be very strong to pray just a Hail Mary. Pray it as frequently as you can (without going crazy, of course).

Yes, I had a similar experience. I bought a small crucifix, I attached it a medal of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, I went to a parish to get it blessed and I hold it tight while praying when I needee it.

It’s 25 years now from them. The crucifix is still here, near me.

I pray for you.

Hello neslor!

I am a recent convert and i’m very glad to know that you have fully realized getting closer to God through Jesus.

All experiences of evil is pretty normal. However, it is also pretty normal that we eventually get over (not just through) them through the grace of Christ. Please remember that we humans can never overcome temptation alone but only through the grace of our Lord do we overcome and PREVENT sins.

I suggest you pray the Lord’s Prayer whenever you “feel” that you are going into the “cycle” again. As you do this, meditate specially during you say “lead us not into temptation … deliver us from evil”: asking for grace and strength for all challenges that you face and will soon face.

Your realization of being “negative” is a start of the revelation to you of God’s grace. Since if we cannot realize our true weakness, how could we realize the absolute strength that only our God can offer. Ask and you shall receive. To add up, you can also frequent confession so you can even obtain a more concrete blessings (spiritual) and guide (spiritual and psychological).

Your fear of “not being able to handle” the situations well is also true for all of us – including me, you, and all others. That is why we have to constantly pray and ask for graces so God will give us words and energy for fulfilling tasks ahead of us.

Prayer is not about energy. It is about your Faith and Hope for the grace that God will give to you. Keep these in your heart or even pray for them. You can ask for other Saints and specially Mother Mary to pray for you – as i will and other Faithfuls also.

Finally, always remember that trials are always with the true Faithful. These challenges are but instruments for us to become strong in Faith – with great rewards in Heaven on top of being
resurrected.

I commend you for posting your concerns in an a proper environment not just anywhere else. You could also ask spiritual advice from a good Priest or Bishop if you think you really need to.

Thanks so much for your prayers! It sounded like depression to me also, but it comes on like a tidal wave out of the blue, and then it is just over and I feel great. That sounds different than depression, unless evil is using depression to attack me…not sure. Either way, I’ve never experienced this before, and know it is because my relationship w/ Jesus is being strengthened. Thanks so much for your response :angel1:

Your post helped me a lot, thank you!! I was always coming up with my own prayers during the tough times, instead of praying the rosary or Hail Mary…and I know I don’t go to confession enough; I tend to go 1x every 5-6 months. We are blessed to have the sacraments as often as necessary!! Again, thank you for your help 🙂

Hi, I see you’re new too!!! Congrats on your conversion 🙂

Your post helped me to feel normal, thank you!! I’m so glad to know others go through this and that it helps us become strong in Faith. Thank you for all the advice and prayers:)

I listened to the relevantradio.com today, and a caller called in with similar situation. The priest on the radio talked about couple of things and will try my best to remember them, rephrasing though:
  • when a person gets back to the right road, there will be some sort of emotions - some day he feels up; others he feels down. He is able to recognize his fault, unworthiness, and sins.
  • Coming back to Jesus is the worst news to Satan, and he will work double hard toward this person. Satan wants him to feel unworthy, scared. Satan wants him to doubt God. (Of course, we are sinful and unworthy, but God is merciful).
In your case, Satan works harder to give similar effect. He wants you to think that Jesus has abandoned you. Do not fall for this trap.

Keep on praying and thank God for His mercy and loving because He has guided you to the right path.

Hello neslor…thank you for sharing with us!
You have received excellent advice and support.
I would just like to add…be certain that all is well with you physically.
Sometimes small problems like low blood sugar can cause basic anxiety, sadness or feeling depressed. Sometimes a person can have a small physical problem and temptations going on together.
If you have not had a good physical lately it may be a very good idea to see your family doctor,
And watch the intake of sugar in your diet as well.
Sugar causes the blood sugar to rise quickly and than drop too low and one can experience these kinds of symptoms.
God Bless You neslor :gopray2: .

I had an experience somewhat similar to this, as I was just beginning to focus my heart on Jesus. At a certain point in my life, I began to become passionately interested in encountering Jesus myself and in developing a relationship with him. During that time, for a period of several months, these twisted thoughts began harassing my mind, trying to compel me to kill my family members.

Obviously, there are major differences between my experience and yours. In the end, when I met Jesus, I learned that my experience had been a demonic intervention in my life to try to destroy me and my family before I could meet Jesus. My parents and I prayed against demons, and the thoughts disappeared completely and immediately. I was freed, and there has never been a recurrence of those thoughts in my mind. The demon came back a few days later, and that time I actually sensed its evil and darkness incredibly, and for a few seconds I even saw the thing. It is completely cut off from my life now, though, for all the seven years now that I’ve been growing in Christ.

The only reason I bring up my experience is that from your description of what you’re going through, it sounds as though the enemy is trying to attack you, to break down your relationship with God even as it is budding. The same thing happened to me, though in a different way. This is something the enemy does. I think that they like to particularly pick on new believers, to try to squelch them before they gain a firm footing in their relationship with God, and also they like to attack people that are truly intruding on their territory in a real way. If a Christian, whether he or she mature or new to the faith, is taking a powerful stand against the enemy, that believer is more likely to be attacked. But a new believer also is particularly likely to be attacked.

From your description of what happens to you, I think that a demon is entering your household and assaulting you. Perhaps it is using depression as a tool. You’re experiencing a “darkness,” to use your own word. That’s the same word I would use to describe what I’ve experienced, when sensing an evil spirit.

If you look in the scripture, demons do use medical or scientific means to attack people. They use the physical, sometimes. I expect, however, that if you raise the cross of Christ in your household, praying that God will make it a fortress of the Holy Spirit, praying that he will send his angels to shield you, and turning your house and home and everything you have over to God, submitting all of your environment that is under your control and yourself to Jesus for his protection, so that it’s his property and not yours, these experiences will stop. I would also pray against the evil spirit, binding it in the name of Jesus and commanding it not to approach you again. And pray that Jesus will illuminate your eyes with discernment, so that you can see the truth of what is going on and know what to do.

Thanks so much for your prayers! It sounded like depression to me also, but it comes on like a tidal wave out of the blue, and then it is just over and I feel great. That sounds different than depression, unless evil is using depression to attack me…not sure. There are different forms of depression.
In any case that’s something to rule out…
