I’m surprised this hasn’t been posted already.
The newspaper, El Diaro de Chile, published an article last week by Spanish psychologist Jose Maria Amenos Vidal titled, “Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone and the scientific evidence that supports the relationship between homosexuality and pedophilia.” The author asserts that the cardinal was correct in affirming such a link during his visit to Chile.

Just for clarification, Cardinal Bertone was referring to sexual abuse of minors by the clergy involve adolescent boys, and not a trend in society in general:

Now ask yourself: The quoted gentleman is an ‘expert’ in exactly what discipline?

While noteworthy because a Cardinal said it, this is not really all that new: HLI published some years ago a survey of studies on the issue in 2005.

The rate of abuse by those identifying as homosexual appear to be about as high as by school staff, 10 times that of the general population.
 
We all try to base our judgments on the best scientific evidence. It sometimes seems that all scientific endeavors in particular hot button fields have become so politicized that it is precisely the scientist who cannot be trusted. Homosexuality was declassified as a pyschiatric disorder on the DSMII because the scientist considered that their profession had their fingers on the scale. Now the bias in most scientific research is the other way, and is as much a response to the PC thinking of the left as it is anything to do with science.

From the perspective of the Catholic theology of the body and sexuality in general, homosexuality will always be a disorder. This is not a scientific conclusion, but a theological one. Jesus is the Life. Life therefore being the supreme value, our sexuality becomes a life giving value. It is not viewed so much as a characteristic of our personality, as the pyschologist might, as it is the will to life literally personified.
 
It doesn’t matter what sexual preference those people who abused the children where/are. There are decent homosexuals that would be repulsed by the behavior as these priests.

Don’t look for a scape goat in this one.
 
On the contrary, the truth very much matters. In terms of the clergy priesthood scandal in America at least, the homosexuality of the priest was indeed very much related to the scandal that has occurred.
 
Leftist and homosexual activists have thus far been able to control the debate with their politically correct agenda.

It is time that Catholics themselves understand the exact nature of this problem. We are the ones who are being financially held to task after all for the disaster that this degrading behavior has left in its wake.

In the Catholic clergy scandal, it was 81 % homosexual abuse. Homosexuality indeed was a relevant factor.
 
Political correctness forbids us from speaking the glaringly obvious truth - the clergy abuse scandal is overwhelmingly a homosexuality scandal. To solve the problem, we must first recognize the REAL nature of the problem - homosexuals wearing clerical collars and masquerading as men of God. Political correctness is what allowed the smoke of Satan in the guise of homosexuality into the temple of God in the first place. We must be not afraid to see the problem for what it really is, and then deal with it accordingly.

This is NOT looking for a scapegoat; here you have a psychologist and a psychiatrist saying that the two are linked. You have to look at the evidence.

In many ways it is a scapegoat, this scandle is not about predetory priests, its about the hiarchy fully knowing and intentfully moving them around. Sexual predetors are an unfortunate part of nature, it just happens in all cultures, economic status, and religion. But willfully hiding a predetor and helping them is a moral and ethical crime agaist humanity, add the fact that this persons are supposed to be moral and ethical leaders, it only makes it more villianous. That is what this scandle is about.

Very true and when I was molested it was by someone who liked girls and boys.🤷

Honest question: Are you impugning Vidal’s qualifications or Fitzgibbon’s? Not clear from your post. In either case, what is the basis of your challenge?

I am very sorry to hear this, I am a survivor as well. I know how it can affect ones life in subtle ways that most take for granted.
 
First off I’d like to give my deepest sympathies to those that have been abused. 😦

Second, from when I’ve heard Fitzgibbons speak on EWTN he seems to come from the view that Same-Sex Attraction is caused (mostly) by childhood trauma or poor child-parent relationships / role models. Given that context, his comments on the relationship between SSA and abuse makes sense (from his point of view)…

In his 2002 “Letter to Catholic Bishops,” Fitzgibbons identified priests prone to sexual abuse as having suffered “profound emotional pain” during childhood due to loneliness, problems in their relationships with their fathers, rejection by their peers, lack of male confidence, and poor self image or body image. Fitzgibbons said that these experiences lead priests especially to direct their sadness and anger towards the Church, her teachings on sexual morality, and the Magisterium.

He also noted that priests who have engaged in sexual misconduct with minors suffer from a “denial of sin in their lives.” “They consistently refused to examine their consciences, to accept the Church’s teachings on moral issues as a guide for their personal actions, or regularly avail themselves of the sacrament of reconciliation. These priests either refused to seek spiritual direction or choose (sic) a spiritual director or confessor who openly rebelled against Church teachings on sexuality,” the letter said.

We need to be careful here. One or even a handful of “experts” can be found to say almost anything. Ever notice that at trials the defense can almost always find an “expert witness” to completely contradict the prosecution’s “expert witness” and vice versa?

A fair point Father.

However, it seems that there is enough evidence to merit further study, particularly in regards to policy making going forward.
