  1. The EF is limited to the revised 1962 Missal and rubrics, right?
  2. Has the Pius V missal been abolished?
If not, to what extent can it be used?
    What about Quo Primum?
I’m guessing No. 1

Thanks!

  1. The EF is the 1962 Missal, no revisions.
  2. Quo Primum is still in effect as far as I know, although you will always get arguments about one Pope binding another. The 1570 Missal has been revised several times, though it would still be highly recognizeable in its current 1962 form.

And remember that Quo Primum is printed in the editio typica of 1962, as it was in prior editions.

Quo primum is in effect with the later modifications: the LIturgy is reserved to the Apostolic See, above that the Missal have to be revise by learned men, based on antique documents.

The 1570 Missal is still recognizable in the 2002 Missal too. The is only one Mass, the Mass of all Ages regardless of the form.

Thanks for the replies!

So one wouldn’t be allowed to celebrate the liturgy according to the unrevised
missal (of Pius V)?

What about holy week? When is the EF (1962) permitted?
When is the Pius V (pre-1955) liturgy permitted?
(I’m going to guess never, even if the people wanted it (for some weird reason) and the Holy Saturday liturgy was celebrated as a vigil?).

I’m not trying to sound like I reject the liturgical reform, renewal, and restoration that has been implemented over the years with regard to the Holy Mass. I do not reject the 1970 Missal. (or the 1962 one, for that matter)
I’m just wondering how far back one can get within reason, because I feel like the 1962 Missal is the traditional Mass minus Holy Week and a bunch of holy days.

I like to study the ancient roman liturgy and other (i.e. eastern) liturgies. It gives me a deeper appreciation for both the Roman liturgy and the OF, and gives me a connection between myself and early christians!
So, naturally, I’m wondering how much we can DO the old way. The good thing is it will always be there to study, even if we can no longer do it.

Yes, one (priest) isn’t allowed to celebrate this way.
