Translation. Extraordinary- not ordinary
lay - someone who has not been ordained and is not a cleric.
Eucharistic minister - a priest or bishop who can preside and consecrate at the Eucharistic celebration

ELEM- seems like an oxymoron to me.
The Extraordinary in the original Vatican 2 document did not refer or mean the lay person it meant and means the circumstances in which a lay person might distibute the sacred species so the words are used separate and distinct from each other, no oxymoron.

The word Extraordinary in use in the original Vatican 2 document was not a referral to the Lay person it was to the conditions which might prompt the use of a lay person to distribute, or minister, the sacred species, “commune” the words were separate and distinct from each other, and still are.

Anyone watch 60 Minutes tonight? Some would say the abuse scandal is behind us…it is surely not! How can anyone want or hope for a return to the clericalism that caused this SIN!! I will never understand. I do believe the hierarchy is striving to demean the laity. They truly believe that they are better than lay people. I also believe the majority of Catholics will not stand or it. There are huge divisions in the church that will not go away anytime soon.

Christ set it up as a hierarchy from the beginning. Who are you to disagree?

But the term “Eucharistic Minister” refers exculsively to the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

Every Sacrament has a Minister, the one who confect the Sacraments, or brings about it’s reality.

The Minister of Baptism is the person who pours the water while reciting the Triune Formula. This can be done by a priest or deacon ( the Ordinary Ministers) or, in cases of emergency by a lay person. Baptism, therefore does have an Extraordinary Ministery.

In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the Ordinary Minister is a Bishop ( in the Latin Rite). The Extraordinary minister is a priest with faculties to do so.

In the Sacrament of Marriage, the Ministers of the Sacrament are the couple themselves. There is no Extraordinary Minister of Matrimony.

In the Eucharist, the Minster of the Eucharist is a bishop or validly Ordained priest. The Ordinary Ministers of the Sacrament are bishops and priest in the clerical state. The Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist is a laicized priest (one removed from the clerical state), the can confect the Eucarish in extraordinary circumstances.

An unordained lay person cannot, by definiton, be a Minister of the Euchrist ( or it’s liguistic equialent a Eucharistic Minister).

They can, however bring the confected Eucharist to the community. That is a seperate ministry, can the Minister of Holy Communion. The Ordinary Minister of Holy Communion is a cleric in Holy Orders ( deacon, priest, bishop). They role may, in certain circumstances, be delegated to the laity. Such a person is called an Extraordinary Ministery of Holy Communion, or EMCH for short.

Yes you are correct there are and unfotunately always have been divisions in the church, that is no doubt why our Lord set up a hierachy. At times the hierachy as mortals need cleansing as we all do, and many times we have had very despicable persons in the hierarchy yet the church survives. Our weapon against evil is prayer. The abuse scandal is still with us and will be for as long as it is permitted to be by those who could extinguish it with a decree, however, making that decision for a Bishop is a trying task. The hierarchy needs our prayers, the Holy Father suggest that we pray for him!

I find it interesting that you have such great insights into the minds of other people. Where did you get this great gift?
. I also believe the majority of Catholics will not stand or it. There are huge divisions in the church that will not go away anytime soon.
John 6:60-68 set the example. Those that would not accept the teaching leave. They were the majority. Those that remain will look to the Magisterium, the Church that Christ founded, and say “You have the words of Eternal Life”

We are at cross currents, was this not a discussion of lay persons ministering, or an english lesson?I tried to discern the distinction in the documents of the Vatican, I have failed miserably.

No…Christ did not envision the hierarchy and Roman Curia as it is today. However, This is a topic for another discussion. Sorry for going off topic.

You discerned the term correctly, but it was applied to the incorrect ministry.

And no it was not an “English lesson”, we were not discussing grammar nor syntax, it was a discussion on the Sacramentology of the Church.

The Church makes clear who the Minister of the Sacraments are; thus for the Eucharist, it can never be an unordained person.

The Church also holds that titles of ministries should not be deceptive in nature ( we can agree that it would be wrong for the Church to promote deception, can we not?)

Thus, two different ministries require two different titles, and the two should not be used interchangably.

As usual I will side with the vicar of Christ.

Additionally divisions or not… ratzinger has indicated that the church is much smaller than we think. He said something to the effect of a smaller purer church years back.

Time will tell. But I am placing my bets on the fact that any divisions will soon…(15-20 years) fade. THose who are angry at the magisterium will pass on into eternity and those who were damaged by the fiasco of the 70s to 80s to early 90s have already left and the few that remain are clueless. The vast majority of Catholics will be the John Paul II catholics…they are not known for anti-clericalism…In fact that generation fosters a great respect for the priesthood. Deo Gratias.

The AMerican CHurch is receding from its protestant tendencies and we are seeing a revival of clerical respect. Abuse or not the office of priesthood is apart front he laity as a life of sacrifice and service…yet some seem to want to destroy anyrespect of the office of the priest. Its really a shame and it resembles a false jealousy actually. I guess some see it as a position of power…and they want a piece of the pie…

Oh and I forgot our wonderful wonderful hispanic brothers and sisters. They are truly a gift from God…a total example of Catholic piety…making confession lines long and kissing the hands of the priests…absolutely lovely and breath taking…Deo Gratias.

Things will get better…Christ wills it.

I will not use the word “extraordinary” because there are many of us who believe that word diminishes the role of the laity in the church and enhances clericalism. Call me contrary but I believe the word is not necessary because there is not any confusion about our roles at liturgy. The priest knows his function at mass and the non ordained know theirs.
Your post doesn’t seem to agree with itself? You do know that being a minister of the Eucharist is not ordinarily a function of the laity, right? I don’t get what is diminishing to the laity about that function belonging to clerics; it just is what it is. It’s not any more “diminishing” than reserving reception of the Eucharist to the baptised who are properly disposed. It is not as if a person who hasn’t been baptised or who has not fasted is less of a person before God! Yet some Catholics think this way: that is, that it is some awful insult to non-Catholics or anyone else for that matter that Holy Communion has any conditions placed upon it at all.

Missed this post. Your whole position puzzles me, but I suppose that it is a bit off-topic.
(Unless the OP’s EMHC did insist on eye contact, in which case perhaps the philosophy is all of a piece?)

NO! I quite watching the Communist Broadcasting System (CBS) since the Vietnam war.
It’s EMHC’s such as yourself that I no longer accept Holy Communion from. Does the hierarchy and your pastor know your feelings toward them & beliefs of the Church’s Ordained?

I’m a probation officer who supervises sex offenders. Guess how many who are on my case load who are priests. Zero. They’re all lay people. Sexual abuse is far deeper than what someone does in life.

And also I’d like to point out that the percentage of priests who have abused compared to the number of people in other professions is extremely low. Certainly lower than the general population. Statistically speaking, a child is safer from abuse with a priest than with his/her own parents.

Anna Claire, you’re just looking for something to get mad at right now. You need to do some serious praying about this.

It’s true! The majority of my case load consists of parents who sexually abused their own children. The others, the victim was still a close relative, some within the immediate family.

The general trend amongst them is that they were all sexually abused as young children.

Furthermore, sexual abuse among religious people is actually more prevalent in the protestant sects. The media has simply blown the sexual abuse among Catholic clergy out of proportion.

It really has. It’s just trying to destroy the church.

This is interesting. I do prison ministry conducting communion services (with my bishops blessing of course).

The facility that I serve is the prison that houses sex offenders in my state. Including the safe keeper unit (unit for violent predatory sex offenders and child molosters).

I get 25-30 men at communion services each week…not a single one of them is a priest. Hmm…sure seems like there is agenda driven behind stirring the pot about Clerical sex abuse.

So you got a private revelation on how Christ envisioned His Church, that is good for you. I did not get any of those revelations and so I stick to the public on that is in the Gospel and that gives the authority to the bishops.
