Fr Z posted this, and I found a news link.
Monsignor Charles Pope has held his title in the Catholic Church for 10 years.

“More people call me ‘Monsignor’ than call me ‘Charles,’” the soft-spoken Washington, D.C.-area priest told FoxNews.com on Thursday.

So Pope was perplexed earlier this week when Facebook informed him, after six years using the social-networking service, that they didn’t think he was using his real name.

“I thought it was a scam,” Pope said.

It wasn’t.

Facebook’s policy is to not allow titles on personal site profiles, a spokesman explained, something that goes for religious figures just as much as for politicians and celebrities. There is more flexibility for a Facebook “page.”

This doesn’t have anything to do with religious freedom or discrimination. If people can’t use titles in their names, then they can’t use titles. However, I think Facebook should change the policy.

Facebook has really been coming down on things lately. They are closing accounts on people who used nicknames, too. A personal friend of mine just had his account closed down by Facebook because he was using his nickname.

Facebook is a private entity.
If they want to ban titles in their policy, they have every right to do so

Just do what I did and deactivate it. We need a Catholic version of “Facebook” just as we do for other sites like “GoFundMe.” A Catholic bank would be nice too.

Awestruck is a social networking site that is striving to be the Catholic version of Facebook. I joined it a few days ago after reading about it on Father Z’s blog. I have found Awestruck to be very helpful and user-friendly.

Cool!
If you have a fb account, you can use that to log in to Awestruck, too.

Thanks for the info!

So, does Pope Francis have to go by Jorge Mario Bergoglio when using Facebook?

We need a Catholic version of “Facebook” …
Huh? Yea, no. Unless you’re fed-up with the content of your friends on Facebook, then I’d see the point. But to have a Catholic version because of Facebook’s name policy? I see no point. Either petition for change or follow the policy.

Note: I see the point of the policy, but it’s somewhat silly. One thing Facebook could do is to install a “verification check” symbol similar to twitter as they apply to public figures (politicians, entertainers, professional athletes) to signify the official account.
