“We believe the faculty and the administration of John Carroll University need to take a stand in the face of the bishops’ unwillingness to accept the compromise offered by the Obama administration. We thus ask that, along with the presidents of other Catholic and Jesuit universities, you urge the bishops to avoid the inflammatory rhetoric they have been using to attack the administration’s policy. We ask you to stand up to those who would play politics with women’s health.”

What ‘compromise’ has Obama offered?

Before so called ‘compromise:’ Employers who are morally opposed to contraception, sterilization and abortificants will be mandated to pay for it.

After so called ‘compromise:’ Employers who are morally opposed to contraception, sterilization and aboritficants will have to pay for it.

Does anyone else get the impression that these groups who are so eager to support the mandate now that the “compromise” has been announced, actually supported it all along but were just too nervous to say so given the widespread disapproval by so many Catholics, even liberal ones?

It’s as though the mandate came out, the Bishops unanimously voiced their disapproval, and these groups kind of mumbled along with them “Yeah…it’s bad…” because even they knew that the majority of Catholics disapproved. Now that the compromise has been announced, they look at it as an excuse for them to support it.

$39,000 a year to attend John Carroll University?

You gotta be kidding me!

Probably true, but there has been no compromise and everybody knows it, supporters and opponents of the HHS mandate alike - Obama’s speech was nothing more than an accounting trick.

In looking at the letter, it appears that none of the signatories are priests/religious (I don’t know what ‘HS’ and ‘MT’ mean after names). However, I do find it troubling that a professor of Theology and Religious studies signed it–and as the primary. If a professor of Theology doesn’t see a problem with the “accommodation”, I wonder what he is teaching in class.

Jesuits…I am shocked…Would anyone else have guessed? If Jesuits don’t want the bad image, they should rein in these people. Its getting old.

I know, I meant that they didn’t really care about a “compromise” or “accommodation”, but it’s as though they’ve been itching to publicly support the mandate, and now they have an “excuse” to.

“We believe that the American Catholic bishops have the right to proclaim Catholic teaching vigorously and loudly. However, we also believe that access to contraception is central to the health and well being of women and children.””

It sounds to me as though these professors simply reject the Church’s teaching on contraception.

They might as well just have stated as much in their letter. Obviously they do not respect the Church’s right to free exercise of religion.

Another reason that so many Catholics have no concept of a holy, Christ-centered worldview.

So-called Jesuit university faculty–lead by a theology professor, no less–greasing the slippery slope toward world-wide mandatory abortion policies… No wonder so many “Catholics” have become the liberal politicians pushing these policies; they probably graduated from these same universities.

I am truly baffled why the Presidents of every “Catholic” university (which claims to teach what Christ would teach) don’t fire faculty members which believe and teach such garbage. Or why the Bishops overseeing these Presidents (if they actually have this in their job description) don’t push the issue, and push trustees to hire Presidents who hold to Christ’s teachings.

Anyone else wonder this???

One word. Tenure.

“We ask you to stand up to those who would play politics with women’s health”…Women’s HEALTH? REALLY? I just heard again today that artificial contraceptives (oral) are a Class 1 carcinogen for breast cancer in women. Right up there says the Dr. I was listening to with asbestos and cigarettes. She said everyone in the Medical Community and everyone at the ACS KNOWS IT! There is all kinds of documentation to back it up, but everyone is going along with the program, and keeping their mouths shut.

Besides this fact, reproductive health has nothing to do with “women’s health”. Pregnancy is not a disease, and preventing it can be done without resorting to carcinogens. Wonder if it would be smart to maybe follow Church teachings?😉 Me thinks this group of Jesuits come from the progressive heretic side of Jesuits.

Can anyone say “Humanae Vitae”? Pope Paul V1 predicted (maybe I should say “prophesied”) what would happen if artificial contraception became the norm. All of it has already been fulfilled, and more! But there was a bitter battle among the clergy on it…and I mean BITTER. Some of the Bishops were pretty much heavy handedly coercing other clergy to ignore Humanae Vitae, and renounce the encyclical. Yep, the smoke of Satan had definitely entered the Sanctuary.

Wonder which side of the fence these Jesuits were on?

A Jesuit university’s staff supports Obama in direct contradiction to the Church’s teachings?

What a non-surprise. Are the Jesuits even officially Catholic anymore? 😦

Nothing would send a clearer message than “summer school and Fall semesters are cancelled until replacement staff can be vetted and hired; no signatory to the letter will be present after this semester.”

St. Ignatius of Loyola, please pray that the order you established will return to the full teachings of the Church.

There are 2 groups of Jesuits…those that are faithful to the Church and those that are not. Blessed John Paul called them out at one point and basically told them to “shape up or ship out”. Guess the group that does not adhere to Church teachings doesn’t obey either.

Why is anyone surprised? Very few “Catholic” schools and universities have had anything distinctively Catholic about them for decades. Same thing with “Catholic” healthcare. Nothing distinctively Catholic at all that anyone who pays attention can see.

People here are “shocked! shocked!!! to find ‘catholic’ entities are not really Catholic!!]” Apologies to “Casablanca” and its character Louis Renault.

This is exactly why the Administration promulgated the HHS rule it did - and why it will win. Frankly, I don’t blame the Administration at all - the fault is with the Bishops, Provincials, Superiors and other religious leaders who let this happen, tolerated and supported it. We, too, I might add. Very hard to blame the Administration for adopting rules that apply to non-catholic entities, because I fail to see how “Catholic” healthcare, etc., are Catholic in any real sense. This Faculty letter is simply more proof of same.
