To Our Protestant Brethren…

In the world of varying denominations, Faith Alone means something different to each group of believers… Some think it simply means a belief in something that cannot be proven. others believe it is a spiritual thing that completely transforms a person.

For a moment, and solely for the sake of this thread, Drop any understanding you may currently have of the term Faith Alone…

IF the word faith simply means “A belief in something where there is no proof” (and only if) Would you still believe in Faith Alone.

I am not looking for reasoning on why this definition is or is not valid, so i respectfully request it not be taken in that direction. Just a simple yes or no with some reasoning… If faith meant that and ONLY that, would you still believe in Faith Alone as what you are really saying is Saved by believing alone…

I reiterate… do NOT look at this question from what YOUR understanding of “saved by faith alone” I want you to answer based on the understanding poised here… even if you do not agree with that understanding…

TO CATHOLICS… If a protestant says no we are not saved by THIS understanding of faith alone… do not use it to trap them in later threads… This thread is not meant as a trap… but more seeing what people believe when a definition is presented to them…

“Faith” is a way of ordering ones life. “Faith” entails a life lived in trust that the God who reveals Himself in Jesus of Nazareth knows what He is doing. “Faith” is a way of perceiving life…and living in that “understanding” that God has everything under control…He is Soverign over His creation…we are held up in that “Ocean of Love and Light”. “Faith” is living in such a way that we display that He is Trustworthy to “get us through”…come what may.

The words recorded in Job are the epitome of what “faith” really is…“Though He slay me, still will I trust Him.”

Keep in mind, the definitions you are using are symbolic definitions, and not actual definitions…

It is comparable to saying A drivers license is freedom to do what you need to make your life your own… Is this definition inaccurate? No, but it is not the definition of a drivers license…

The definitions described in Job are symbolic definitions, albeit very good symbolic definitions, but not actual definitions…

You also have to be careful about using symbolic definitions when examine anything in literature… Bible or other wise… using these modified definitions alter what the passage will actually mean. Actual definitions are there for a reason, without consistent definitions of words, language is usless

That being said…

I respectfully request this NOT be a thread about what faith means… but more why you would or would not deny faith alone if the definition presented is accurate.

Not to start an arguement, but you seem not to understand what “Faith Alone” means.

All Christian groups or “denomionations” hold the same understanding of “Faith Alone”.

Actually this is false… If you ask a Lutheran what Faith Alone means, you will get a different answer than what Baptist believe… This boils down to what thew word Faith means… Since different people have different understandings of the word, you will have different understandings of what Faith Alone means.

Is it possible i don’t not understand how YOU see the term faith and faith alone, absolutely, But to say that all Christians believe in Faith alone the same way is False for no other reason than because every denomination has a different understanding of the word Faith. A proper way to say it would be that all Protestant Churches proclaim that we are saved by Faith Alone. But that is where the similarities end. Once you actually get into what the different denominations believe, you will find that they do not agree…

With respect, saying every Protestant Denomination believes in the word faith the same way you do shows a need for more study. I Do not mean that in a harsh way, so please do not take it as a slap, it simple shows that some study is needed and I am respectfully requesting perhaps some research.

Furthermore, to say all Christian groups and denominations believe faith alone in some way or another is false as well… Catholics, and Orthodox do NOT subscribe to it as well. Or do you believe that these groups are not Christians.

That Beings said Are you the one that selected that you DO believe it is still true as presented? If so, I would like to hear your reasoning…

Again, I am not interested in whether or not you think my definition is false as i KNOW it doesn’t apply to all Protestants. This is merely an experiment. Take it for that and understand I am not preaching theology, but more simply seeing what people would agree on when this situation is presented

Of course that’s not what faith alone means. Why would it be?

The Reformation understanding of faith included three ideas:
  1. Assensus - Believing the (salvific) propositions; Giving assent to them.
  2. Notitia - Recognition of and understanding the data.
  3. Fiducia - Trusting the propositions are true for oneself and trusting the Person making them.
The third having pride of place.
