My cousin and his wife have two children, as do my husband and I. We agree on so many aspects of parenthood- attachment parenting, breastfeeding, natural birthing, gentle but firm discipline, healthy foods, outdoor play before video games…all the basic things.

Or so I thought. Recently the wife has posted several things on her facebook account that made me realize that she is not just “prochoice” but actively proabortion. She linked a news article about a female politician who made a statement about having had an abortion in her early life, “because she just wasn’t ready to have a child.” Which turned my stomach in and of itself. But the wife’s comment was worse. Finally! she wrote. It’s been weighing so hard on my heart to realize that she was HAPPY that this stranger wanted to kill her baby for her own convenience.

Then just a week later, she made her own review of the movie coming out wherein the main character has an abortion. Wife’s review? “best movie I’ve seen in ages. A long time coming”.

I know they aren’t church goers, and I’ve always recognized that was a huge gap in our lifestyles. But I think now I’m understanding that the proabortion folks out there aren’t just faceless… they are in fact sometimes women, mothers, who simply don’t see the disgusting contradiction between fighting desperately for the health and safety of their own kids and being perfectly happy to have other kids be killed on a daily basis.

Please Lord, forgive us all. We are drowning in this culture of death. I’m so sad by this tonight.

This is a good example that shows how we cannot assume that others share our values just because they seem like nice people. We must not be afraid to show Christian and prolife values in opposition to the Culture of Death so prevalent in the world.

Honestly, pro-aborts like your cousin’s wife seem to be active… eugenicists or population controllers or whatever more than anything. Why? It’s the idea that only some people are worthy to reproduce (eugenicists) or that no one should ever reproduce due to “humans being the scourge of the planet” (population controllers). These people feel like they’re doing the world a favor by promoting abortion, because they’ll be saving the taxpayers money on children born in poverty or to unfit parents due to less money being spent on Medicaid, food stamps, and other government programs (eugenicists) OR by making sure endangered species are considered more important than human life (population controllers). Many population controllers will go to such lengths such as self-sterilization before they have a single child; eugenicists will have children of their own, but actively cheer other women having abortions or being sterilized so as to not increase the “undesirable” population.

Yes. And one of the things I really, really don’t understand (among several others) is that her POV is that Christians who don’t support abortion or gay rights are backwards haters. How does she not see that killing babies is hateful and evil? Why is that denied? Another of her posts recently used the famous “woman’s right to choose.” I’m not brave enough…but I do want to ask, choose what? please finish the sentence. Choose death for your child?

I think you should start whether or not she believes that it is a baby being killed and when does it become a baby.

I think that since she oohed and aahed over her ultrasound pix of her own babies, as most moms do, at that early visit, then she knows perfectly well that it is a baby. There is a baby shape, a heart beat- it’s a baby. Theoretically if someone had an abortion BEFORE six weeks, say, around two weeks late of her period, I suppose there may not be a heart beat. But since in EVERY state it’s legal up to 12 weeks or more, it’s a baby. Semantics don’t work on this topic and it’s been argued pointlessly.

I have to wonder if she does not have an abortion in her past that she does not talk about, whether her baby or the baby of someone she is close to. Tread carefully, because those women are out there in the pro-abortion movement, and the hurt and guilt they carry around can be far nearer to their hearts than you might guess.

For instance, if she were to say something about a woman having an abortion early in life, you might say, “Oh, but when she sees the ultrasound of her second baby and then later holds the younger brother or sister in her arms after the birth, that would be such a deep hurt. My heart would go out to her, because then she’d know what she had done.” It makes the point of what a horror abortion is while not demonizing a woman with a terrible burden to carry, someone who just might be the woman you are talking to at that moment.

You know, I never even thought of that, EasterJoy. Thank you for bringing a little compassion into this. I was feeling so much irritation and disgust- but I can see how it could be more complicated than that. Such a painful topic all around.

That kind of comment would get a raised eyebrow out of me, but nothing more because I have a very strict policy of not debating loved ones about these issues. But if this were said to my SIL, the OP might get more than she bargained for. My SIL had an abortion between her second and third children, and her perspective on the issue may not be something that the OP is ready to hear. Starting a discussion by a announcing how other people must think or feel is a recipe for disaster.

Debates with loved ones don’t change minds, they result in anger and hurt. The best thing todo is refuse to get sucked in.

Whoah. That makes your sister-in-law sounds pretty cold without any more to go on. Care to share more about her perspective?
