Family convicted in Canada ‘honor murders’

Kingston, Ontario (CNN) – A Canadian jury Sunday convicted three members of a family of Afghan immigrants of the “honor” murders of four female relatives whose bodies were found in an Ontario canal.

Mohammed Shafia, 58; his wife, Tooba Mohammad Yahya, 42; and their son, Hamed, 21, were found guilty of first-degree murder in the deaths of Shafia’s three teenage daughters and his first wife in his polygamous marriage.

Sunday’s verdicts followed a three-month trial, in which jurors heard wiretaps of Shafia referring to his daughters as “whores” and ranting about their behavior.

“This is a good day for Canadian justice. Our democratic society protects the rights of all,” Gerard Laarhuis, the chief prosecutor in the case, told reporters outside the courthouse in Kingston. “It’s a very bad day, because this jury found that four strong, vivacious and freedom-loving women were murdered by their own family.”

Most Muslims would find the actions of the family in committing said murder abhorrent.

Where is the outcry from Muslim leadership? Or Muslim publications? It should be easy to find these things online.

There is no such thing as Muslim leadership. There is no Muslim Pope. Plus, the individual you responded to identified their religion as “currently attending the mosque” so therefore you have a Muslim who has responded and has said most Muslims would abhor this murder. Also, why do you honestly need a response from Muslims about this? It doen’t really mean anything

I guess at some point, the Judeo-Christians decided to cross that one off the to-do list, and thank God for that.

This is a tragedy, what has happened here (and in Kingston, Ontario! It’s a quiet, sleepy little college town!). But this is what happens when people get stuck in an extreme, religious righteousness linked to a sentence written thousands of years ago.

I hope all people of all religions learn from this tragedy, so that we can all be more open-minded and think and act out of love and logic…rather than be mindless rule-followers and act out of fear or prejudice or “honor”.

Because Jesus said… he without sin go ahead and cast the first store… That is why we don’t stone people anymore.

This story is not about stoning.

It’s about 3 young girls who became very Canadianized ( is that a word ) 😛 and their father being set with his Afghan tribal mentality killed them along with his first wife.

Dead easy if one looked.

But why should imams and Muslim leaders have to step forward to condemn murder every time a member of their flock commits it? We’re failing terribly by allowing this narrative to continue.

If a group were to make a grand pronouncement declaring it was wrong to immolate pets, and tried to organize a campaign to condemn pet immolation, people would view them as loonies. Anyone with an inkling of intelligence and moral sense knows it’s immoral to immolate pets and no sane person would do it. It shouldn’t require anyone to speak out against it.

Yet when imams and other leaders in the Muslim community declare that it’s wrong for Muslims to murder their wives and daughters, they are embraced by Western society enlightened and progressive.

This truly is a sign of the bigotry of low expectations.

And when a community feels the need to make an announcement opposing infanticide and domestic violence and worse, we expectantly wait for and/or demand these announcements and applaud when they are issued, it speaks a foul, disgusting rot in our whole culture.

Very sad story and worse still it also increases bias and bigotry for other Muslims who live peacefully in Canada.

I’d bet that UK Muslims are not your run-of-the-mill Arab Muslims and yes of course I’d expect the Muslims Women’s league to oppose so-called “Honor” (really dishonor) killings.

Why should Muslims come out against murder? What sane adult alive doesn’t know murder is wrong?

Do we sit around waiting for bishops to release official condemnations every time a Catholic husband kills his wife?

So why the different standard for Muslims?

Problem is that many Islamic people suffer from poor education in their own faith, and so often rely on someone telling them what they should believe. This is especially true in Afghanistan where the literacy rate was poor. And so it is easy for a person to interpret something wrongly and the OP is the result.

There is nothing in the islamic scripture, AKA their koran which calls or defines “honor killings”.

It is a muslim Middle Eastern “tribal” & “cultural” problem that has existed for decades and for over a thousand of years.

You cannot and you will not change their minds.
