Cardinal Souraphiel says synod will urge bishops’ conferences ‘to see that the teaching of the Gospel is inculturated’

I don’t like the sound of this.
The Catholic Herald seems to use a misleading title, imo. The full quote does not indicate that the Church will adapt it’s teaching but that it will apply it: "The episcopal conferences have been sent, not to replace or to change the teaching of Our Lord Jesus Christ or the teaching of the Church, but to see that the teaching of the Gospel is inculturated, is put into the life situation of the particular country or particular society,” Cardinal Souraphiel said.

I read it. I don’t like the sound of it either. The word “inculturated” sounds suspicious to me. :nope:

Sounds like an opening for a lot of mischief from those who wish to change Church teaching. Make “adaptations” for their diocese/country that in effect change Church teaching.

The Synod hasnt concluded yet---- how can this possibly be the outcome? The title of the article makes it appear this is the final outcome.

:nope: No sirree…

Recipe for disaster. In all fairness, this has been going on in the Church since the beginning. Some extreme beaten to death examples: liberation theology, IRA, German/Swiss bishops and their new theology of love to be unveiled at the Synod. But even smaller things like the Day of the Dead in Mexico, allowing African native cultures to blend with local Catholic Churches, etc. It is very helpful sometimes to let the locals keep their cultural traditions and day to day concerns alive in the Church. The question is whether the culture you are accommodating or the Catholic Church in truth ultimately prevails. Which brings us to what *is *the fundamental tension in our secular, morally relative Western nations right now speaking as a Catholic. I don’t believe a big shot of relativism is exactly what the Church needs right now - or indeed it if can even handle it and stay intact.

And I am hearing a lot of people say, well, no worries, the Synod won’t change teaching. I think it is prudent to point out that, with all due respect, that is a secondary concern. What the Church says, what the media says, what practices “evolve” and “soften” (whether in accord with teaching or not) on a local or general level is what matters for everyone outside of the Church and decent chunk of those in it.

Welcome to the spirit of the Family Synod.
