Hello all,

to date i’ve kept my new church habits sort of secret from my family, for at least the first couple of months. My mom found out I went to mass with my girlfriend 4 weeks ago, and she was more surprised than anything else. I also go to RCIA classes, but she doesn’t know about that yet.

I’ve tried to keep my rosary tucked away, as well as the bag of books i carry around (bible, catechism, diving mercy pamphlet) just to avoid any problems, at least until i am strong in the faith. I let the cat out of the bag at dinner today and needless to say, it became quite the spectacle. My Dad was Catholic before he was married, so he didn’t really seem phased by it.

My mom on the other hand, went suddenly defensive and started quizzing me about birth control and what i thought about it; to which she laughed for a good while, telling me that it’s not written in the bible and that the pope has no business in the bedroom. She was raised a baptist, then became an Anglican when my brother and i had to be baptized.

She told me her only qualm with Catholics was the birth control one, and that if i became a catholic i would have a million babies (her words). She also seems to think that every time i go over to my gf’s house, her mom is indoctrinating me, but really my journey has been entirely my own. Read about it in some of my other posts. Also, she keeps asking me if i think she’s evil now for using contraceptives, to which i say i don’t reserve the right to judge you, that’s not up to me. She’s worried I’m going to turn into a sex crazed mid-life crisis husband with 40 kids apparently.

My strength in the faith was enough to take the attack, thanks to many rosaries, but i would like to be able to show her, based on the bible, that contraception is indeed morally wrong and it is not just the pope who thinks so.

I need some sage words from people in a situation like mine, or who have gone through what i am. I don’t feel lost, or conflicted, my faith is strong, but dealing with family members is different than witnessing to jehova’s who come knocking, or to my friends.

Thank you all ,

-rev

I can sympathize.

My parents are Southern baptist and they freaked out when I first told them I was in RCIA a few years ago. Don’t know why it is they seem to think we who convert are indoctrinated by someone - as if we are sat down and have a large lightbulb in our face and a priest or someone is brainwashing you- you get the idea. (My parents couldn’t beleive that the HS would lead their little girl to the CC, it had to be some sinister influence and I wasn’t smart enough to make my own decision. 🤷 Yeah, right.

Sounds like you handled the situation well. Will :gopray2: it goes well for ya.

I was in the same situations as you, Rev, and to some degree, I still am. But through prayer and fasting, I’m trying to get through it. My father is a former Catholic, now Methodist. I had my conversion to the Faith about a year and a half ago, but entered the Church this past Easter.

My mother is very much against the Church, and we’ve had a few confrontations about it. If you have a chance to go to Adoration, and pray before Christ, do so. God bless you on your journey and if you have any questions or want advice from someone who was in your shoes (and still is), feel free to ask:thumbsup: .

Hello all,

My mom on the other hand, went suddenly defensive and started quizzing me about birth control and what i thought about it; to which she laughed for a good while, telling me that it’s not written in the bible and that the pope has no business in the bedroom.
Well you can reassure your mother that American Catholics contracept at the same rates as the general population. LOL

Seriously, if the pope has no business in your bedroom, even less so does your mother! You are an adult male. She’s got boundary issues and clearly doesn’t understand the “leave and cleave” of marriage. Your contraception and fertility decisions are up to you and your future wife, not her.

Most women enjoy being grandmothers and I hope she doesn’t alienate herself from you with further hostility and misbehavior…because she might lose access to her future grandchildren.

She shouldn’t take grandchildren for granted either, because there’s women deciding not to have children because it’s bad for the environment. It was in the secular news forum recently.

It sounded like you handled it well. Hopefully she’ll calm down and not hurl insults at you or your gf.

Somebody else recently asked for biblical arguments against birth control for a Protestant friend of hers who was considering sterilization. I gathered up some bible verses for her, both a “short answer” with verses specifically referring to birth control and a “long answer” putting artificial birth control and NFP into a context of what the Bible says about self-giving love (Greek agape as opposed to eros), covenant unity of marriage, children as blessings, generosity in parenthood, abstinence (relevant to the periodic abstinence of today’s Natural Family Planning approved by the Church for serious reasons), oral traditions and teaching authority of the Church, Christian discipleship, fraternal correction (relevant to “judge not lest ye be judged”), etc.

I’m not sure how to refer you to another thread; does this work?
forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=193658

Best wishes in your faith journey. Be patient with yourself as you learn and grow in your faith; don’t beat yourself up about being unable yet to explain it and defend it to hostile questioners. That will come in time, and hopefully someday, you’ll have the graces from the Sacrament of Confirmation to help you through those awkward moments of “giving a reason for your hope…” 🙂

God bless you.
Christine

The Pope might not have any business in the bedroom, but does God?

As a Catholic I would treat the understanding of the natural cycles and being open to life as God’s direction for human reproduction and in acceptance of Natural Law, which God was merciful enough to enact for us.

A million babies, wow you could get into the record books with that.

You should have seen the fireworks that happened when my wife announced she was going to return to the Catholic Church. Her sister had a fainting spell after going on and on about how wrong it all was. It was pretty dramatic and stressful but now things are much better. She even has attended Mass with us, it just took her about 2 months to start talking to my wife again and a couple years to start coming around.

Here is a link to read about contraception.

God Bless

The first thing I suggest is that you obtain a couple of good books on the subject:

The Bible and Birth Control, by Charles Provan (he is not a Catholic)

Open Embrace: A Protestant Couple Rethinks Birth Control by Sam and Bethany Torode

you can obtain great info at www.omsoul.com

Also, if your mom thinks that it’s none of the Pope’s business what goes on in the bedroom why does she think it’s any of HER business what goes on in your bedroom or how many children you have?

Ask her what’s wrong with lots of children. Children are great gifts from God.

Awesome answers everybody! Things have calmed down a little, i threw some bible passages back for her to ponder. I learned it’s important to stay super calm when people are attacking your beliefs, and in the end i think it strengthened my faith.

Man i love this forum :D:D

From my experience, I suggest being very, very gentle when treading around the issue of contraception with your mother. While I would never have you deny, or omit the truth in any way, I had this conversation with my mother (who is Catholic) about a year ago, and it got incredibly ugly. My mother seemed to take my strengthening faith and agreement with the Church on contraception as a personal attack on her. I suggest that you only bring this issue up whenever she is ready to talk about it. As you just said, it is important you remain very calm, and be very gentle.
she keeps asking me if i think she’s evil now for using contraceptives
I have a feeling that is a HUGE part of what this is about. You need to be careful to be prudent, and preach the truth without completely alienating and pushing her away from the faith. Finally, you yourself must live what the Church teaches the best you can, with as much love as you can. If she sees you growing in virtue and in love, hopefully that will soften her heart and make her a little less defensive. Peace be with you.

Bible verse on contraception? Romans 1:26 . . .That whole passage is about perverted sexual practices. Verse 26 says “even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature” (KJV). I know, I know. People will say that refers to lesbian sex. But the verse SAYS: “change the natural use into that which is against nature.” RSV says “exchanged natural relations for unnatural.” What is contracepted sex, if not “unnatural relations”?

Many Protestant evangelicals of a more fundamentalist persuasion are following the natural trajectory of the pro-life movement and recognizing the continuum back to contraception. I’m sure a quick google would turn up some resources.

But I wouldn’t engage on this level with your mother.

Contraception is less a Scriptural question than it is a question of natural law.

Cradle Catholic here who “found” her Catholic voice a year ago, thanks to learning our history and more about our faith.

Funny thing is as soon as I learned something, God would “give” me the opportunity to exercise my voice. I have had to defend our faith more times then I care to count. God is using me to defend His church. I can not keep what I learn to myself. He won’t let me. Seriously. I am a person who likes to be left alone, but my spirit is strong and I have a strong mind that retains everything I read. I was never able to retain dates and names when I was in school, but now? Oh boy I amaze myself. I walk away thanking and praising God for the wonderful gifts He gives to me.

I have questioned other faiths and learning about them I learned to question ours. It is through the questioning we learn the truth.

Welcome to the Catholic Church the church that the Christ has left us.When we read scripture we hear the word “one” repeated often…

One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism, One Bride,
One Bridegroom, One Flesh, One Shepherd, One Flock, OneHeart, One Mind,
One Church

Ask questions…What came first the bible or the church?

Who decided what books went into the bible?

When did the Protest begin? (The Protestant Reformation_

And before that how many churches were there?

How do Protestants abide in Jesus when they read John 6?

Learn Apologetics…

The bible cannot go against the church, for it came from the church.

I think this too, i’ve had to answer more questions in the last couple of months no matter how hard i try to keep it personal. I’ve never encountered anti-catholics (not yet at least), but just a lot of mis informed people.

Thank you everyone for your stories, they help 😃

There’s an old saying.

“Very few people actually hate the Catholic church; the rest just misunderstand it.” (or something like that)

Here is a website with lots of information on NFP (Natural Family Planning): www.ccli.org

When your mom says “You’ll end up with a million kids!” you should respond with, “And you would have a problem with being blessed with many grandchildren from me??? Am I that bad of a son that you don’t think you could stand more than one or two of my offspring???” 😃

Your mother may take your proof against contraception as a personal attack on her choices. She may view it as you, putting your nose into her personal bedroom business. I don’t know that I would go there.

I am currently in RCIA, and I get different comments from my atheist family, all which point towards an idea that they think I am rejecting them personally over my choice to be a part of any religion.

I had a friend give me some advice once, when faced with this sort of thing. He advised that I keep my family closer to me. More than ever go out of my way to let them know I love them.

So, maybe try an approach of being strong in your convictions, explain your POV clearly, but also keep love as a big ingredient in everything you say and do.
