Hello all,
to date i’ve kept my new church habits sort of secret from my family, for at least the first couple of months. My mom found out I went to mass with my girlfriend 4 weeks ago, and she was more surprised than anything else. I also go to RCIA classes, but she doesn’t know about that yet.
I’ve tried to keep my rosary tucked away, as well as the bag of books i carry around (bible, catechism, diving mercy pamphlet) just to avoid any problems, at least until i am strong in the faith. I let the cat out of the bag at dinner today and needless to say, it became quite the spectacle. My Dad was Catholic before he was married, so he didn’t really seem phased by it.
My mom on the other hand, went suddenly defensive and started quizzing me about birth control and what i thought about it; to which she laughed for a good while, telling me that it’s not written in the bible and that the pope has no business in the bedroom. She was raised a baptist, then became an Anglican when my brother and i had to be baptized.
She told me her only qualm with Catholics was the birth control one, and that if i became a catholic i would have a million babies (her words).
She also seems to think that every time i go over to my gf’s house, her mom is indoctrinating me, but really my journey has been entirely my own. Read about it in some of my other posts. Also, she keeps asking me if i think she’s evil now for using contraceptives, to which i say i don’t reserve the right to judge you, that’s not up to me. She’s worried I’m going to turn into a sex crazed mid-life crisis husband with 40 kids apparently.
My strength in the faith was enough to take the attack, thanks to many rosaries, but i would like to be able to show her, based on the bible, that contraception is indeed morally wrong and it is not just the pope who thinks so.
I need some sage words from people in a situation like mine, or who have gone through what i am. I don’t feel lost, or conflicted, my faith is strong, but dealing with family members is different than witnessing to jehova’s who come knocking, or to my friends.
Thank you all ,
