Famous large families?

Danielle Steel is the mother/stepmother of nine children. Mia Farrow has a large family. Josephine Baker adopted children from all over the globe - she called them her rainbow family.
 
I thought only 5 of the 9 survived to adulthood; from somewhere I read.

There were nine children in all, but only five lived. Four became Carmelites, and one (Leonie) joined the Visitation order.

That poster would have been in error.
The newest trend is educated women married to educated men deciding tohave large families. Basicly, they have been successful in careers and are wanting to be successful in families too. There’s been several articles/books/interviews lately about the controversy of educated women “dropping out” of the work force to be sahm to several children. Just do a search and they pop up.
I would say the only real reason a person of much higher education doesn’t have a large family is simply because the clock ran out on them and by the time they finished their education and such, they didn’t have enough fertility left to make a large family. IOW, it’s not really about the education as about how long they waited to start their families.
Oh and don’t forget the Duggars from Ark. - he was an elected official (state rep or congress or senator or somethng - i forget).

Since none of their children have done anything with their lives yet, I don’t think we can say that their children have been successful. However, they are quite famous (3 specials on TLC, and a 4th one coming, I believe)
 
My great-aunt had 16 or 17 - one of the sons became vicar general of the Gary diocese.
 
The Von Trapp family, the Bush family, the many branches of Roosevelts, and Rockefellers.
 
My grandparents had ten children, but none of them are famous.
 
My mother has 11 siblings. My mother is one of the most highly-regarded pediatricians in my area, most of her other siblings are doctors of some sort, a few veteranarians, one is a well-known surgeon. I’m tempted to say that my mother’s family has been pretty successful.

I think this is very likely these days also. In the past, many people became very sucessful with less education than seems to be required now. I don’t know if that is because the overall education level was lower (ie, fewer people went to college at all let alone got Master’s Degrees), or that high school did more than it does these days.

Also, very often, even though the wife in the family may have been extremely brilliant, she often attended less school and worked less outside the home than the husband. So she was home having a family and raising their children to also be well-educated, thinking people who in turn became successful!

My granddad was, I think, one of 13 - again not famous, but he was incredible as a doctor (discovered a hitherto unknown medical condition which was unique to his region :cool: ) - so much so that all four of his children and fully half of his grandchildren have been inspired to follow in his footsteps.

His father, my great-granddad, who was probably also one of a decent-sized brood, represented his region in Parliament in Vienna for a few years (just prior to World War I) as well :cool:
 
Johann Sebastian Bach and his 20-odd children, among whom were Carl Philip Emanuel, and Johann Freidrich who enjoyed stellar careers in music.

One of my best friends was the youngest of ten children. Her mother became a doctor in a time when few women accomplished that. I’d say that was a pretty well-educated and successful woman. And she raised a wonderful family.
 
That was so neat to hear about Danielle Steele having 9 children, I went to her web site and sent her a note. (I also write, though I don’t exactly have 69 published bestsellers to my name! :o ) What are the odds that she personally reads anything sent to her? Oh, well! It was pretty exciting to hear someone can be that prolific while raising a family the same size as mine! 🙂
 
Im suprised no one has mentioned Jacob and his twelve sons so far. Certainly one of the monumental big families in history.

Yep, and the third generation, too. They live a couple towns over from me and the grand- and great- grand children are all successful in Real Estate. One of them has worked for my mom selling her house 👍
 
My very,very, smart NFP obgyn has I think 10 or 11!!!
And he is a great person as well.
 
I just saw a story this weekend on a football coach that came from a family of 10 children and he now has 7 of his own. I am not sure which team - it was during the Arizona Cardinals vs. SF 49’ers game. So one of those two teams.
 
I think Stephen Mosher the founder of www.pop.org
has 10 children. he’s the one who orignally blew the whistle on the one child policy in China
