How many seminarians did Saginaw have before Bishop Carlson came on the scene? Did Saginaw have many ordinations before he arrived?
Someone can correct me if I’m wrong—but it was my understanding Saginaw didn’t have ANY seminarians before Bishop Carlson came—and that the last ordination was back like in 2000 or so. There had been a lot of men from this diocese who felt a calling over the years but Bishop Untener refused to ordain them. A lot of them went to other dioceses. Rumors abounded that Bishop Untener didn’t want to ordain any priests until he could ordain women (Bishop Untener himself vigorously denied this.) More likely is that Bishop Untener refused to ordain any priest who didn’t share his liberal interpretation of how to implement “the spirit of Vatican II.”

There were at least two people already in the Seminary when Bishop Carlson came to Saginaw. I think the two priests who were ordained were already in Seminary, and two or three of the transitional deacons were already “in the system,” for lack of a better term.

I think you’re right and wrong. I know a few people that are in a position to know. Bishop Untener scrapped the Permanent Deacon program because he couldn’t ordain women. Several priests told me that (all supportive of it). He didn’t stop ordaining priests because of that, though.

But, (again, my sources) do tell me that Bishop Untener did his best to ordain priests who were generally supportive of women’s/married men’s ordination, among other things.

Now, every time this comes up, someone carries on about how nice and wonderful and holy Bishop Untener was. How much he cared, his impressive homilies, and always, why are we complaining about him and not helping the poor. These critical remarks apply to his ideaology on women’s ordination. This isn’t a whitewash bashing of Bishop Untener. Just because he did a bunch of great things does not mean that we can overlook the other stuff he did that was wrong.

The home page of the Diocese of Saginaw website has a photo of the 24 men returning to or entering the seminary this fall for the diocese.

If my math is right, we had 16 in the seminary last year, less 2 ordinations gives us 14, so there are 10! new seminary students this fall?? I’m not sure how the Bishop is pulling this off, but in a diocese with only about 110 active priests, this has got to be some sort of record.

Does any one know, how many of these young men are “home grown” versus coming into the Diocese from outside? It would be great to think we are starting to develop our local vocations to the priesthood.

I can tell you personally that Bishop Carlson is a very special man and blessing. I believe that where ever he is…God is working through him to accomplish wonderful things!!

The current print issue of this magazine says 57 active priests.

Here’s where I got my information from:

futurechurch.org/fpm/corpus/prieststats/statistics.php

I will lean towards believing the information from the diocese, rather than this dated information. This lower number of priests makes the number of seminarians even more amazing to me.

Back to my original question, does anyone know how many of these young men are from within the diocese?
