Fasting at Work - any tips?

don’t want to interfere with your routine,
You said you don’t want to interfere with my routine, but then you gave me a lot of advice on how to eat and how to do my fast and tell me it’s “not really a fast”.

With all due respect, I’ve been under the care of a nutritionist in the distant past because I used to have periods of eating nothing and it was damaging both my metabolism and my health. Egg and grapefruit is a fast that was part of the nutritionist’s program; it is better for my metabolism than 2 days of bread fast, and it actually does kick-start my particular metabolism (going without food entirely does not and is dangerous), and that is why I do bread fast for only 1 day (actually less than 24 hours) and do the egg and grapefruit for the other day.

Also, I note that the health benefits or whatever of my fasting should not have even come up in your discussion. This fast is for a religious devotion, not for me to lose weight or have more energy. It is also a fast that is lasting for less than 24 hours each week, not something I’m doing as a 12 day crash program. You are missing the point when you talk about “health”. I’m looking for ways to cope with the penance of the fast, not for ways to make the fast feel better, jazz my body up or conform to whatever misguided (for me) idea you have of what a “fast” is. Thanks but no thanks.

I tend to get sleepy whenever I’m working at my desk and I think it’s due to not keeping stimulated with my body. When I’m in my lab physically working it doesn’t happen. When I have to pull a couple hours at the desk doing really monotonous things like number crunching in Excel I take sporadic breaks outside. I find 3 minutes of fresh air, the wind on my face, and a little bit of sunshine on my skin does the trick in jolting me back to productivity for a few hours.

I’m glad you’re fasting. It will help your spiritual life. It helps to do short prayers throughout the day. It’ll only take a few seconds, just say “Lord, please help me. I’m doing this for you”, or something to that effect. 🙂

I’ve done some intermittent fasting for spiritual purposes as well as some for health purposes. I’m no expert but can relay what I’ve experienced and read if it’s useful.
Physiologically there is a process your body goes through and it occurs in stages. I’ve read that a headache is common on the first day of a fast. I haven’t gotten them too badly myself though. Your body first burns through the glycogen (stored glucose) stores, mainly in your muscles and liver. Most have between 24-36 hours of this. As another poster said lack of enough water is one of the most common fasting mistakes, although it sounds like your comfortable your drinking enough. The other remedy was to add electrolytes to the water. This can help keep basic body functions going, and, I’ve read at least, can help relieve the headache somewhat. I haven’t tried them yet but for hiking I went to REI and picked up some tablets. You put these into your water after strenuous exertion, I would imagine those could be useful here as well. I believe they were $2.50 or so. Sports drinks can have electrolytes as well. I can link some resources for fasting if your interested so you can take a look for yourself. All the best.

I apologize if you didn’t find my post helpful. Feel free to ignore it. Posting here will get you all kinds of advice, helpful and not.
I admire you for fasting for spiritual ends. We can agree to disagree about what a fast is.
God bless.

Thanks, i can’t do the sports drinks (not part of the fast). I’m going to see if the B vitamins help at all with this, next Monday when I do it again.

Do nuts break your fast? Nuts are high in protein, iron, healthy fats, plus you can eat them at your desk, store them in a drawer, etc. Just eat a few if you want. They fill you up and give you energy - my guess is they would help you with these negative symptoms you mention at work and not throw off your fast that much at all. I particularly love almonds and dates for this - when I get hungry during fasting. Dried fruits, such as apricots, cranberries, walnuts, hazelnuts, raisins, etc etc. Small handfuls are all you need.

Could changing temperature with a cool pack or a hot cup of water be helpful for balanced blood pressure and avoiding tiredness? Just an idea 🙂
