But a special dispensation from the Vatican allowing former Anglican clergy to continue to minister after defecting to Catholicism has allowed hundreds of married priests to serve within the church for the first time since the 12th Century.
Special circumstances allowed for what would otherwise look like an infringement of the celibacy requirement.

Nine hundred years??? Am I* that* old?
There was a father-son priests set in the Archdiocese of Los Ángeles at one time, although if memory serves, one of them was a membe of a religious order. In the latter part of the 20th Century.

A father and son are both serving as priests in the Roman Catholic church for what is thought to be the first time for almost 900 years.

Any comments? Personally, this is great as the celibacy requirement was not dogma - or could not have been.
It’s terrific! And shows that the Church can manage just fine with both celibate and married priests (as was the custom prior to the midieval reforms)

I also believe that in the Byzantine Catholic church, there have been fathers and sons as well.

The best part of anything is that these men answered God’s call to serve His people. We should pray for more vocation.

Hard to believe that in 900 years there hasn’t been a widower go into the priesthood and have an adult son do the same.

IMO, it has zero impact on the issue of priestly celibacy. Granting pastoral exceptions to converts does not undermine the concept for those with eyes to see its benefits for the church.

There are many priests out there who are models of holiness and dedication- and they are celibate. Why try to “prove the Church wrong”? Celibacy is a beautiful calling and it is a true gift to the Church. I haven’t met a good priest yet who wishes he were married (and before anyone throws in the “Eastern Catholic priests can be married” response, all I can say is that the only Eastern Catholic priests I have met have also been monks- and were also celibate).

1 Timothy 3:2
It behoveth therefore a bishop to be blameless, the husband of one wife, sober, prudent, of good behaviour, chaste, given to hospitality, a teacher…

There must be other situations where a father and son are both priests. There are many widowers that have become priests. These priests could have sons that are priests. Single men that raised adopted children can also become priests once their children are independent. These men could have sons that are priests.

Our pastor’s sister and brother-in-law both passed away and, as a single man, he adopted his four nieces. After the last one married he became a priest.

The above reference article would be more accurate if it read “Married father and celibate son duo a first for Catholic Priesthood in 900 years”.

This is not that surprising. The Catholic Church includes the Eastern Catholics where clergy are allowed to be married.
