Being a Catholic in Melbourne I will tell you Father “Bob” Maguire accepted the metaphorical 30 pieces of silver, a long time ago. My priest refused to allow him to hold a wedding in our church, which I think he has been vindicated for now. At funerals and weddings at his church in South Melbourne he makes jokes and comments on things he has no business in discussing. He just likes having his radio show and his atheist followers. I think he needs to apologize and resign from his post for this and if he refuses (which he might because he refused to retire when all priests are obligated to do) he should be excommunicated. He has no humility that I have seen. I will continue to pray for him and hope he realizes his faults.

Fr. Bob needs to join the Protestants if he wishes to protest against the authority of the Catholic Church, which has told him that he, as a priest, can do no such thing.

I think it’s great that this brave man is daring to be progressive. I am so tired of how the Catholic faith is stuck in the dark ages. In my area of the US, there aren’t any American men choosing (“receiving a calling”) the priesthood as a vocation. We have priests here from Vietnam and India who barely speak any English. Only a few in the congregation can understand what they’re saying. We have a convent of cloistered nuns here in town who were shipped in from Vietnam. The diocese brought these women in from Vietnam since there were no English speaking nuns anywhere in the world available. What is the Catholic faith becoming here in America? The leaders of the Catolic church in America are people from other countries who are so difficult to understand because of the language barrier! My mother doesn’t like going to the Mass anymore since she can’t understand the priest. We have been driving 30 minutes into the next town where the Irish priest speaks very clear English and the lovely gentlemen makes a effort to make the Mass enjoyable for everyone.

Amen Redbarron. @ Friends of NYEC or whatever. You can’t pick and choose when being a Catholic, the church does not belong to man it belongs to Christ. If you want to be “progressive” go find one of those churches which have no integrity and worship man and not god.

I agree with you entirely abour Fr. Maguire: not long after the New Mass was introduced, Fr. Maguire would hold the Sacred Host aloft at the priest’s Communion. saying, “This is it. Here is your Jesus.” But he has a number of fellow dissidents, such as Fr. Eric Hodgens. Here follows a Letter to the Editor (too long, of course) on Eric:
Elsie Cunningham (The Courier, Ballarat, Vic. Feb. 2) is absolutely correct regarding the vile article from Fr. Eric Hodgens reprinted from the National Times. He also had an article printed in “The Swag” regarding observations on his golden anniversary – which carried similar rants. (Google Fr. Eric Hodgens).
In Nov. 2005, a group of 24 “leading liberal Catholics” sent a letter to American Archbishop (now Cardinal) William Levada, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Signatories included such paragons of orthodoxy as Sr Veronica Brady, Dr Paul Collins, Fr Eric Hodgens, Frank Purcell, Professor Max Charlesworth, Fr Michael Elligate, Fr Frank Martin and Fr Peter Murnane O.P.
Cardinal Pell responded: "This is a real hoot - such well-known defenders of orthodoxy as Paul Collins, Veronica Brady and Max Charlesworth appealing to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith…” He could easily have included the likes of Fr. Peter Kennedy of Brisbane.
It is precisely because of the predations and opinions of these un-worthy priests that congregations have plummeted! The Diocese of Ballarat, for example, contains some 70,000 nominal Catholics, including over 20,000 City of Ballarat nominal Catholics who do not attend Mass except, perhaps, for a small number, at Christmas and Easter.
I attended the same Year 12 class with “Eric the Cleric” in the early ‘50s. From my memories of him then and his activities since, I am not at all surprised at his orientation in which he vilifies Cardinal George Pell, the post Vatican II popes and conservative or traditional Catholics, and promotes the agenda of pro women priests, married priests (although he knows well that there ARE some married priests in the Catholic Church – such as Anglicans who have reverted to the Church and who have been subsequently ordained), of “welcoming practicing homosexuals to mass and communion” (when he knows that such people ARE welcome to Mass but, because of the objective mortal sin of homosexual practices, they are personally morally obliged to abstain from the reception of Communion).
Yes, dissident Judas priests like him have existed throughout the history of the Church, including Communist plants in seminaries in the mid last century, and – in much smaller numbers – even alleged Satanists have been known in the priesthood! Just such a one is alleged to have been in the Archdiocese of Melbourne the 1960’s – 80’s.
Eric Hodgens is a sad case. May he find eternal rest (in due course) and peace.

Guess whose fault there are so many Catholic leaders from other countries? The “progressive” Catholics. How many Catholics encourage their children to be a priest or a nun these days? The Catholics who complain about these things have no one to look to but themselves…

What a sad statment.
The priesthood is being answered by those who are humble enough to follow Christ and not by man. Where I am from the majority of those who are entering the seminar are those who come from strong Catholic families and not those who are “progressive” catholics, whatever that means.

The Bishops are the ones to be held accountable. As I said in another thread, some of the Bishops are very long overdue in finding their backbone. They have been allowing scandal in some cases since the 1960’s with not so much as a word. The silence is deafening. The Bishops that allow this are accessories to heresy and will be held accountable but not by us, by God Himself. The need for prayer is glaring.

I found a quote from a long-ago saint that may be some consolation to the state of affairs we are suffering from. There are reasons God is allowing these bishops and priests.
In other words, the people of God need to repent and return to saintly ways and HE will honor the scripture above.
