WASHINGTON (CNS) – Father Frank Pavone, one of the country’s most visible and vocal opponents of abortion, has been suspended from active ministry outside the Diocese of Amarillo, Texas, over financial questions about the priest’s operation of Priests for Life.

The suspension was made public in a Sept. 13 letter from Amarillo Bishop Patrick J. Zurek to his fellow bishops across the country, but Father Pavone told Catholic News Service that he was returning to Amarillo and planned to continue functioning as a priest there.

“My decision is the result of deep concerns regarding his stewardship of the finances of the Priests for Life (PFL) organization,” Bishop Zurek wrote. “The PFL has become a business that is quite lucrative which provides Father Pavone with financial independence from all legitimate ecclesiastical oversight.”

I do not see the actual charge of wrongdoing here going just by the O.P.
Ok PFL is making money -as it should. Money is needed for the cause.
Is the father misusing the finds? 🤷

Just because the father has “financial independence” does not mean money is being mismanaged. It does not read as the Father being in defiance of anything.

So, What is the point here?

Indeed. The bishop asked him to return and he is returning. Regardless of the reasons why the bishop is calling him back (the full extent of which none of us is likely to ever know), Fr. Pavone is fulfilling his promise of obedience. And there doesn’t appear to be any accusation against Fr. Pavone.

I pray that the situation gets resolved soon.

The point is that the bishop has decided that Fr. P should not
be working outside his home-diocese for the foreseeable future.
 
Besides obviously praying for Fr. Pavone, I pray that nothing happens to the PFL ministry. It is a great ministry. I can already sense that the abortion lovers are going to try to find an opportunity to pounce. We must hang tough. Defend life ceaslessly. Father or no father. And let Priests for Life keep their ministry strong and focussed.

No, “we” didn’t retaliate with killing, the US government (and other nations) did. That is very different from Roeder’s murder of Tiller.

Roeder was a vigilante, a self appointed judge and executioner. If others also decided it was okay to murder anyone they thought should die, our country would collapse.
 
I am heartened by Father Pavone’s prompt and forthright response to the Bishop’s letter. It appears that Father Pavone is subjecting himself and Priests for Life to the authority of the Bishop, to the extent appropriate. My prayers are with Father Pavone and the Priests for Life Ministry and for those called to investigate this matter. May it be handled justly and expeditiously.

Just yesterday, PFL announced the formation of “an International Private Association of the Faithful called the Gospel of Life Association”. Coincidence?

First PFL moves out of Amarillo to Staten Island and then they form an international association moving them further from the Bishop’s control. Given the recent issues with another high profile priest, the Bishop may be insucure as SVP noted or he may be just being prudently cautious. Time will tell.

I find it curious that the CNS article mentions the financial independence but then goes on to say,
The same records show that Father Pavone received no income from the organization during those years.
