Maybe I missed it because the pix don’t show all the nooks and crannies of the church’s interior, but where is a statue/painting/mosaic/something that represents Our Lady of Fatima? Or isn’t the church about her? I didn’t catch the name of the new church, either.
So far I can’t find any pictures of any detail for the interior of the Church. But did you see places and monuments surrounding the shrine? I think that is surely covered.

Here is the link: ****

Well it is big, maybe to build something of that size, that was the best design. It probably is impressive to see in person. In fact I would love to see it in person, and hope I can someday.

sigh why don’t they build a NICE modern church? Have we lost the technology to construct beautiful churches? Is it just too expensive anymore?

Perhaps it looks a lot nicer from ground level.

I can’t believe someone would make a stick-figure Jesus. It strikes me as blasphemous.

I just don’t get it…

I thought I was looking at the inside of a convention hall at the Holiday Inn. So much for that family feel of your local parish.

Just in case someone thinks spaceship churches are a result of Vatican II, here’s a Cathedral built before Vatican II (and designed for the Missal of the 1950s).

It’s a little strange, but I do like the stained glass windows. And it doesn’t look like a convention hall.

When I look at medieval churches built with flying buttresses and much stained glass, what impresses me is that the builders tried to do something majestic, powerful, and inspiring with light, while having to work with materials which made that very difficult. Modern architechts have the materials and technology to surpass that, yet they often don’t seem to make the effort. It’s as though it’s too much trouble to make something beautiful for God when an assembly hall will do.

oh, you must be joking…that church is truly a disgrace to Our Lady of Fatima and to Holy Mother Church in general…

St. Michael the Archangel, I beseech thee, help our Church!!!

I was referring to the Cathedral of St. Joseph referenced in the link provided by Genesis315, not the Fatima church.

Agreed. Looks like it (this one) had the beginnings of a modern art type influence - kind of minimalist. I’m not sure - but are these pictures recent or from prior to VII? It could have suffered a bit in the duration - stripping of interior artwork, statues and what not. But, even with that…the high ceiling and verticalness of it all still lifts your gaze upward to the heavens…as opposed to the horizontalness (in addition to the utter sterility) of the new Fatima building.

Lord have mercy!

you should get a free bowl of soup when you go into a church that looks like that.

when will church come back to its senses?

I find it amazing that some will pan a church because it does not meet thier myopic idea of how it should be.

The facility hold 9,000 people and some compromises need to be made for a building of that size. A “traditional” type building with, let say 60 per row would have 150 rows of seats. Would you like to be in row 150? I would not.

From what I can see, the crucifix inside (not the one outside) is completely in line with what it should look like. Also, it looks like the tabernacle is centered behind the altar where it should be. Yes, there should be an altar built in front of it, but that is another issue. In addition, the church looks like it has the stations of the cross and they are not the small plaques you see in many churches.

This is a new building and, in time, I predict that the interior will change and improve.

The way the pews are arranged is not the problem that I have with this church.

I don’t think this church expresses Catholicism completely. Where are the statues of the Virgin and the Saints? Where are the paintings? Where are the stained glass windows? Where is the raised altar? In fact, where is the altar? All I can see is a concrete block. The church looks more like a Protestant meeting hall.

The whole thing is aweful. It doesn’t inspire holiness and worship. One word sums it up: Protestant.

Like another poster stated, art is distracting if at first it must be explained to others.

In the case of this “church building”, is Bigger always Better?

I think they forgot to put the steeple on that church. Maybe it’s not completed yet.

Like I said, I don’t think that one is all that bad - still unmistakably a Church. Browsing around their website, I was able to see the remarkable Cathedral it replaced. Seems the original burned down in 1956 - here are pictures of the original during the fire. Man these are horrible and sad pictures - what a tragedy!!!

And here’s the one that replaced it (interior and exterior)…

Still immensely more respectful than the new building at Fatima…

The two pictures together really draw out what is right with the Cathedral, and what is wrong with the new Basilica.

Note the emphasis on the vertical dimention in the Cathedral, and the entire lack of vertical dimention at Fatima.

http://www.cathedralofsaintjoseph.com/images/Gallery_thumb.jpg

In the Cathedral, the eyes are drawn upward, towards Heaven. There is an element that, through the altar, we are drawn up towards Heaven.

That is so totally lacking at Fatima. In fact, just the opposite occures, the ceiling is heavy and domineering, it crushes and flatens.

These effects are not new, they have been known for centuries. In fact, that is why major Churches throughout Christisdom were built that way, (tall with upward directing pillars), it sure wasn;t because the workmen liked hauling stone up several stories. IT was because the end effect drew us towards Heaven, not flattened our eyes like pancakes.

It hard to imaging the Sun dancing or the Holy Family appearing in the Heavens when all you can see is a squat ceiling.

The architect chosen was obviously very skilled at designing an audtiorium, but he\she was a lousy choice for designing a place of Catholic worship.

(Sorry, I was an Engineering Major in college, but I got a minor in Art History - Ecclesial Architecture) 😉

Lourdes underground basilica seats over 20,000 people…could someone explain to me how big a gothic style basilica would have to be to seat that many people

As they will tell you noble simplicity is what it is all about
