You want strange looking Catholic Churches? Looks at the new/future Oakland Cathedral (it’s under construction).

What it will look like inside

I personally think it’s a good looking building, but for a CC? Maybe not. I like the traditional looking churches, the ones w/big archs, and organs, etc… St Peter’s Basilica type.

BTW, the church in the OP is absolutetly ugly. Looks like a landing for a UFO. Plain inside (kinda looks like the a JW Kigndom Hall), the crucifix is too simple.

The Fatima church does look like a spaceship. It also seems rather cold and uninviting. I kind of like new and different architecture, but this misses the mark.

The pic of the interior makes the ceiling appear very low and the interior claustrophobic, even if it supposed to contain 9000 people.

The interior of that Oakland Cathedral gives me the creeps…the only thing I can thini of is PAGAN temple

I heard they are using this type of architecture to attract tourists, since it’s right in the heart of Oakland. They got a great site right next to a famous Lake in Oakland: Lake Merritt. I’m sure they **will **get many tourists. It’ll make them wonder “what on Earth is that?”, bring them in and voila, you got possible converts?

I kind of like that new Oakland cathedral… it’s weird for sure, but I think it still looks like a church and is inspiring. Although I suppose I can see why people might think it looks like a pagan sun temple or something like that, the sun does symbolize Jesus… that’s why churches used to face east.

And the foundation is fish-shaped… another symbol of our Saviour.

Who said new is always better/ Me, I’ll take St Peters Basilica any day over these new so-called churches.

Well… at least they can give a specific purpose for the architectural choices.

Converts to what?

And doesn’t California already have a Crystal “Cathedral”?

Of course if you want to see the old Cathedral of St Joseph before the fire, You can look here:

keelysociety.com/cathedralfire.htm

The “new” Hartford Cathedral seems far better than the new Fatima one though. Personally I don’t care for Hartford Cathedral. It is rather cold and stark when you are actually in there. But it is what we have.

If you want to go to some nice churches within a short distance in CT, go to Waterbury. At one time before there were three dioceses in CT, Waterbury was most central and three churches were trying to be the cathedral for the Diocese. Then populations shifted and grew and new diocese were added changing the centers.

But if you go to Waterbury, Check out the Immaculate on the Green, The Shrine of St. Anne and St. Patrick.

If you like small Churches, Blessed Sacrament in the West end was renovated quite nicely a few years back. Very nice result. (and I had a little hand in that!)

Is that a concert hall? How come the statue of John Paul II is better than the crucifix.

The Crystal Cathedral is actually rather beautiful. Have you ever been in it? Or is this just more “I don’t like California or anything that comes out of it” stuff?

Reading that link, it looks like the Cathedral of St. Joseph burned* the day after* another church in Hartford burned down (St Patrick’s)? Was arson ever suspected???

DustinsDad
I don’t think arson was ever suspected. Well maybe suspected, but no proof found.

St. Patrick’s burned down 3 times in it’s 100 year history.

Added
The fire before the cathedral fire was arson.

Found this tidbit of History on the Church
