Some of the anime I like isn’t the most morally sound stuff, but still good. Someone told me a while back to look into* Uta Kata*, and I hated it for about the first four episodes (they kept telling it would get better) and then after that loved it. The themes, about losing the innocence of childhood (which made reference to the Seven Heavenly Virtues being inverted into the Seven Deadly Sins) and choosing to hope in both yourself and others rather than give into the “logical” option of misanthropy, was moving, IMO. But then again, that might be because I watched all thirteen episodes in one night and it was late by the time I finished. lol

I found the implicit same-sex attraction thing a little disarming at times and something of a put-off, but not as much as the skimpy outfits the main characters were clad in. I did have a lot of sympathy for the two young girls who both had a relationship with the same jerk-wad guy and later ended up taking to each other. I felt like their closeness was natural, but that it was sad that such scorn birthed a sexual aspect between the two.

I also like Full Metal Alchemist, and its plot-line amazes me! The cultural references, the religious themes, that’s great stuff! The enemies being named after the Seven Deadly Sins and the Christian themes sometimes explicity discussed are quite interesting. And the thing I find most interesting is that the main characters, the heroes, can’t bring themselves to believe in God over science (which they see at odds) but their adversaries can. Ultimately, the reality of sin and decay is affirmed, and the zealots are even justified at times. It makes for an interesting paradox and definitely hints more of reality than most shows I’ve seen. Brilliant stuff.

I don’t get why some adults don’t take this stuff seriously… 🤷 It was written for them as much as for peeps my age. I guess here in America they feel too put-off by its cartoon dimension. Sad. 😦

Anyhoo…

Fullmetal Alchemist was AMAZING!!!

I love the way Ed’s character changes. I even loved what they did with Lust and Gluttony toward the end. But the manga is very different from the anime—I think the anime’s an improvement.

Many in the U.S. still regard anything animated as for children; it will take more immersion into anime before people realize that animation can be for adults as well. It’s getting there, but not yet.

Not in the least, I’m afraid. Gomen ne.
Oh well. If you liked that other thing I did I think you might like this, but dunno. I’m going to end up doing a NICE BOAT at the point the pairing’s actual fangirls will want smut, so if that’s your squick, no worries. And if it’s your squick that it’s “normal”, this is not a nice pairing at all.

It totally counts, just like Xenosaga does, even without the (bad) anime adaptation of the first one.

Seriously, though, did anyone else notice that that movie ends in baptism for the remission of sins?

Hen na ya, soraa.

I love it how the moment Japanese anime gets mentioned 9/10 parents flip out.

Can someone please tell me what and how is it there is that instant reaction. And don’t tell me its due to sex and violence! There was a ton of anime that I used to watch that had neither before my parents banned it long ago.

Edit: This thread got the excel saga theme stuck in my head…! Gah get it out! get it out! its so catchy!

Favorite? Full Metal Alchemist. By far the best I’ve seen.

Honorable Mentions: Azumanga Daioh, Trigun, Ranma 1/2

I know I’m leaving some out, but those are the ones that come to mind immediately.

I don’t read too much manga because they (typically) use the translations from the dubs, which just annoys me. I do have the manga for FMA (in Japanese), but that’s just mentally exhausting to read, so I hardly ever pick them up. 🤷

Because some anime IS loaded with sex and violence. The association stuck, I guess.

But that’s a bit like saying all movies should be banned. Parents need to pick and choose. There’s nothing wrong with Pokemon, most of the Miyazaki films, or a lot of other titles.

I love the Excel Saga theme.

ANYway…

The problem is that people do not understand that anime is a medium and not a genre. That is the explanation I give which tends to calm people.

But let’s face it, a lot of what people are exposed to in anime is sex and violence. Look at typical anime people are exposed to:
  • Akira (rather violent)
  • Ghost in the Shell (violence and nudity)
  • Ninja Scroll (Extreme violence, nudity, and rape)
And then in most shows you still have a lot of fan service and ecchi humor. I am fortunate that my girlfriend can roll her eyes along with me when she sees a typical anime “oops, I accidentally walked in on the girls shower” scene or some such, but I can see how people might not take it lightly.

If you want to introduce someone to anime, it might be best to show them something by Studio Ghibli. Another option, if you are brave and the person does not mind weirdness, is Satoshi Kon’s recent brilliant work Paprika.

Oooh! Excel Saga. I’ve forgotten about that one. I’ll have to find a slim pack somewhere.

Heh heh. ‘Emergency Food Supply.’

I got the Excel Saga series at Best Buy. I think it was something like $30. I couldn’t pass that up. 😃 On a (somewhat) related note, there’s a song by Joe Satriani that bears an uncanny resemblance to the theme song from Excel Saga. Fittingly enough, the song is titled Strange.

*shudders * I don’t how you guys could stand crazy anime parodies like that. >.>;;

It is blasphemy, IT IS MADNESS!!

Anyways, to add my two cents I think most parents outside Japan are still stuck with the cartoons-r-4-kids mentality. They have this misleading standard that if it’s gonna be a cartoon, it should be something wacky and kiddie (or in the worse case, something like Dora the Explorer or Blues Clues  )

IMO, they just really need to face the fact that cartoons are really just many drawings put together and not all drawings are of cute cuddly teddy bears or smurfs.

In fact, when I read I prefer imagining the characters in anime style instead of live-action. Anime characters look sooo purdy… w
