Some of the anime I like isn’t the most morally sound stuff, but still good. Someone told me a while back to look into* Uta Kata*, and I hated it for about the first four episodes (they kept telling it would get better) and then after that loved it. The themes, about losing the innocence of childhood (which made reference to the Seven Heavenly Virtues being inverted into the Seven Deadly Sins) and choosing to hope in both yourself and others rather than give into the “logical” option of misanthropy, was moving, IMO. But then again, that might be because I watched all thirteen episodes in one night and it was late by the time I finished. lol
I found the implicit same-sex attraction thing a little disarming at times and something of a put-off, but not as much as the skimpy outfits the main characters were clad in. I did have a lot of sympathy for the two young girls who both had a relationship with the same jerk-wad guy and later ended up taking to each other. I felt like their closeness was natural, but that it was sad that such scorn birthed a sexual aspect between the two.
I also like Full Metal Alchemist, and its plot-line amazes me! The cultural references, the religious themes, that’s great stuff! The enemies being named after the Seven Deadly Sins and the Christian themes sometimes explicity discussed are quite interesting. And the thing I find most interesting is that the main characters, the heroes, can’t bring themselves to believe in God over science (which they see at odds) but their adversaries can. Ultimately, the reality of sin and decay is affirmed, and the zealots are even justified at times. It makes for an interesting paradox and definitely hints more of reality than most shows I’ve seen. Brilliant stuff.
I don’t get why some adults don’t take this stuff seriously…
It was written for them as much as for peeps my age. I guess here in America they feel too put-off by its cartoon dimension. Sad.
Anyhoo…
