This is a staple from my childhood. I could never figure out how the ships got into the middle of the desert to go and take Baby Jesus to Bethlehem, so it has always stuck in my head.

jmcrae and CW, Thanks for the reply. After posting I found some other versions of the song with words and without words. Check out post number 62. The second version actually has the words whereby you can comprehend what they are singing. Enjoy! Thanks again as I just love this song. I think the ships are symbolic but don’t ask me how. lol Pehaps someone else can shed some light on this.

All I can think of is that camels are often called “ships of the desert”…but they weren’t riding camels:shrug:

On second thought the Three ships must symbolize the Holy Trinity. Below is yet another version where you can understand the words.

Sorry about the repeated posting. Can you tell I love this song?

There is an instrumental song named “I saw Three Ships” or Three Ships. It is sooooooooooooo beautiful, the best version I have ever heard is by a symphony orchestra. Have any of you heard of it?
I’ve heard it with lyrics, sung by both the Cambridge Singers and by Nat King Cole. It’s lovely.

I think it’s a Victorian era song, and the ships represent the three wise men or the Holy family or the Trinity…or all of those.

My favorite? Boy, that’s a tough question. I love “What Child Is This?” and “O Holy Night” and “Angels We Have Heard on High.” I’m also very fond of “Silent Night” and “Do You Hear What I Hear?” and “O Come O Come Emmanuel” and “The First Noel” and “Joy to the World” and “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.” I think I’ve listed them in order, but it really is hard to say because they are all so beautiful when done well.

On a secular note I’ve always liked “Carol of the Bells” and “Silver Bells” and “Walking in a Winter Wonderland” and “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.”

Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire reminds me… Every once in awhile I get a wild hare to make my own Christmas cards and often they’re silly. One year I used a fireplace design with 4 knotted ropes hanging where the stockings would be. The caption was “Just Knots Roasting on an Open Fire.”

I know puns are supposed to be an inferior kind of humor, but I love 'em.

My brother always sings it backwards - "Jack Frost roasting on an open fire - chestnuts nipping at your nose … " 😛

He also sings, “The stars lay on the ground, the snow shone bright!!”

:rotfl: Good for your brother!
What’s that line from The Christmas Song - “everybody knows a turkey…”

Ave Maria by a long shot…but for a contemporary song…I have always like The Carpenters…they were a little before my time, but Karen’s voice singing…Merry Christmas, Darling…is ugh. Just melts me. :o
It melts me, too, Whatever Girl. It wasn’t before my time… I also love Gesu Bambino, sung by Kathleen Battle. It’s sublime!

Sleigh Ride has my vote for the most peppy, invigorating, secular tune.🙂

Silent Night.

I never heard of “O Holy Night”. I only half know Three Kings because my friend and I were recording Christmas Carols back when we were in elementary school, and I had no idea what that song was. Being part German, my family would sing Silent Night and O Christmas Tree in German, as well.

Good King Wenceslas is high on my list.
I have to add this (because other posters are slipping in parodies of other carols), I always laughed my head off at one of the Christmas episodes of the '70s sit-com “Alice” when Mel, the diner owner, comes skipping in, wearing a Santa hat and singing…

“Good King Wences-what’s-his-name, la la la la la la…”

Other than that, that’s one of my favorites, too!

Mine, too, BlueRose!

Little Drummer Boy is my favorite, but there are so many good ones.

My favorite would have to be Canon in D (Pachibel) that is performed by the Trans Siberian Orchestra. 2nd would be Halleluia from Handel’s Messiah.

❤️ ❤️ ❤️

What Child Is This (Greensleeves) and Canon in D are my favorites… I love TSO!!!

But if I have to pick one from Bama’s list, I suppose it would probably be Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. Very pretty song.
