What’s yours?

My favorite ran for a number of seasons, but I didn’t see it last year. It ends like this:

Father: Woah! Those must have been some cookies you gave him.

Little girl: I didn’t give him cookies. I gave him cheeeeeeeeeeese!

I can’t stand the mass-market beer but I love the Clysdyles pulling the wagon through the snow, just music, no words. I am also a sucker for the old Hallmark commercials that just show family scenes, no talking.

There is an old Christmas commercial that I remember (from the 60’s or early 70’s), that I love and wish to see again. I think it was for one of the main channels. Anyway, it was a cartoon of all these little birds chirping in trees all happy. Then you hear footsteps crunching in the snow. A cartoon man walks into the forest with a saw in his hand. The birds are all chirping in a frightened manner now, for fear he will cut down the tree they are in. All of a sudden he puts the saw up to his chin, like a violin player, and begins to play a carol on the musical saw (it might have been God Rest Ye Merry Gentlmen). And then all the little birds chime in and chirp along.

It was just the cutest thing!

I can’t stand any commercial, Christmas or not, that plays on the emotions of the individual. I like the pure entertaining commercials, like the ones shown during the Superbowl. (With the exceptions of the inappropriate ones) The more entertaining the commercial the least I remember who or what is being advertised. The latest one I like is the commercial about the truck trying to jump start a car with cables. When the car owners asks the truck owner to “give it some gas” the car explodes from the power of the truck. Funny.

The commercials that choked me up were the Coca Cola Santa trucks all lit up with lights. Every place they went Christmas lights came on along the countryside. I guess I’m one of those people who see something spiritual in just about everything, so it made me think of how the world would light up if the Holy Infant were coming through the country let alone St. Nicholas.

And for funny ones, I loved barbarians from Capital One trying to get Christmas jobs. The barbarian selling Christmas trees who throws a tree a family just bought through the back window of an SUV, breaking the glass was hilarious, as well as the barbarian dancing in the Nutcracker Suite. Too funny!

I know there must have been some I enjoyed through the years; despite popular opinion I’m not a complete Grinch nor totally against emotions. 😃

I’m glad that there are people who enjoy Christmas commercials(or any commercial) and who ‘use’ that enjoyment to spread love, peace, goodwill, etc. I don’t think that the media is intrinsically evil (hey, I’m listening to EWTN as a background now).

That being said, for some reason this year I am, not exactly bothered by, but perhaps more distinctly ‘unmoved’ by Christmas commercials than ever before.

Setting aside that they started even before Hallowe’en this year. . .not to mention Christmas programming already all over the tube, the radio stations, the malls and stores, and overrunning the mail deliveries. . .I just find the vast majority so ‘commercial’, so carefully calculated to inculcate the feeling that 'unless I am out there buy-buy-buying the ho-ho-whole stock of merchandise I am giving my loved ones a bad Christmas. . .yet at the same time that Santa and things have been elevated to godhood, Christianity and indeed any kind of religious beliefs are treated at best as relative, slightly quaint and outmoded interchangeable vehicles for people who just haven’t yet ‘seen the light’, and at worst as jingoistic, bloodthirsty corrupt ‘weapons of mass destruction’ which are really the cause for all humanity’s ills. . .

well, I guess right now the disconnect has become too much for me personally.

I’m with the posters who have fond memories of cute commercials from the more innocent past, the ones with less hype, hoopla and greed.

And there will probably be some cute ones in years to come. I’m hoping, anyway. After all, aren’t things often darkest just before the dawn?

My brother and I always watched for the Santa in the Norelco razor commercial. Once we saw it, we knew it was the Christmas Season! —KCT

Garmin has two commercials I love. Both are singers singing to the tune of Carol of the Bells.
One is a man who is lost and sees a moose, goes thru a bad neighborhood and can’t find hiway 10.
The other is a woman shopping who goes to the mall, a big and tall store, gets chinese food, and goes to the salon for a waxing.
I think they are hysterical.
Locally there is a Jewelry store commercial which plays every Christmas which we locals have come to think of as a secular Christmas song. It’s pretty famous around these parts.
It goes…
Jewelry is the gift to give,
Cos it’s the gift that’ll live and live,
So give the gift you know can’t fail
At BC Clark’s anniversary sale
Most sales are after Christmas
But Clarks is just before
Most everything is marked way down
Savings you can’t ignore
At Oklahoma’s oldest jeweler
Since 1892
The Christmas wish of BC Clark’s is to keep on pleasing you,
So give the gift you know can’t fail
From BC Clark’s anniversary sale
And here’s the original.

Well, of course, the

NORELCO

Commercial!!

The one with Santa sliding on the razor down the hill. It was only after that commercial did we KNOW it was Christmas time!!

😃

I also love the Budweiser Clydesdales!!!

My favorite is the old Folgers one where the eldest son comes home for the holidays and surprises everyone by making coffee and waking them up. I think it’s Folgers, anyway…a lot of good it did if I’m not sure! 😛

This one is for Folgers. I shed a tear every time I see that commercial - silly me.

The M&Ms commercial where they are leaving Red and Green M&Ms out for Santa and then they both faint saying “They do exist” (Santa about M&Ms) and “He does exist” (The M&Ms about Santa). Very cute!

And the old time hallmark commercials - like the one where the grandfather tells about being there for Hannakauh and then his grandchild gives him a card and its from his old friend that he met on the boat.

Or the younger brother being surpised by his older brother when he was singing the Christmas songs.

I wish they’d do more of those.

None of them. Commercialism in the name of Christmas? Bah, Humbug!😦

Ah well…“mystified” you old grouch…

Commercialism or not, if the ad agencies hit a nerve and stir your emotions about what this season is really about, they’ve done their job.

Regardless if you purchase the product in the ad, if you are thinking of giving, sacrificing, or just being a nicer person the goal has been reached.

Yes! Especially because the brother joined him in singing “O Holy Night,” my favorite.

Another one I used to love was the one with the most adorable little boy I’d ever seen (this was before my son was born) leaving McDonalds gift coupons for Santa. As the child is climbing the stairs, he hears “Ho ho ho!” and turns around and gasps.

Years later, I saw on a “Before They Were Stars” show that the cute little kid was Corey Feldman!

I also like the one where the little girl leaves cheese (instead of cookies) for Santa.
Hershey kisses playing “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”.
This is one of my favorites, short, but sweet! It makes me chuckle to see the kisses straightening their tags at the conductor’s prompting – just the way we simultaneously raise our books in the chorus. 😃
