America’s Test Kitchen w/ Chris Kimball, Bridget, Jack, and the rest of the gang–idiot proofing basic and fancy recipes, giving solid for value recomendations of gear and ingredients.

and here they are: americastestkitchen.com/

Favorite chef:
Julia Child–the original show and the guest chef show.

Favorite cooking show:
Top Chef

Oh Yes Julia Child and Jacque Pepin 👍

French cooking :yup:

I don’t care for Italian food 🤷 especially pasta

Maybe a year or so ago I was home watching TV on a Saturday afternoon and came across a Dinner Impossible marathon. I’d never seen the show before, and I sat there enthralled for HOURS! My favorites were the Colonial Williamsburg episode and the Renaissance Fair episode. I don’t get to watch it often, but I find it absolutely fascinating to learn how things were done in different eras, or in different locales.

I also enjoy the Food Network Challenge; especially the ones where they are working with sugar or making cakes.I don’t really care for the cook-off type episodes (best chicken dish, etc).

Favorite host would, arguably, be Alton Brown. I enjoy so many of them, but I think I could watch him in just about any cooking show.

There is a guy on the PBS Create channel who we love to watch!!

I think he is Basque - and he says asparagus like eh-speh-deh-*gooz’ * 😃 We now always say it like that, and we just love that show!

Can’t think of his name though. :o

In addition to Senor Esparaguss, I must admit that anything Nigella Lawson does is wonderful. She makes real food for real people.

There’s a lot to like about Nigella - she’s one of those who clearly enjoys food, and I like her ethos that good food doesn’t have to be fiddly or fussy or hoity-toity. She’s not afraid to use bottled lemon or lime juice on occasion as a shortcut, for example.

The nutritional value of some of her recipes, on the other hand :bigyikes: - if I ate like that I’d be twice the size I am and about three times the size she is!

Whats your favorite cooking show and chef…?

I like Emeril’s cooking show and is where I got the receipe for the best potato salad.

Bobby Flay is good at grilling just about anything…

oh yes and Take Home Chef…Curtis Stone…👍

Jacques Pepin, bar none.

No fanfare, no froufrou, no ‘food porn,’ no music, no cleavage, just the best chef on television, explaining techniques and demonstrating them.

Nigella is not a little girl, by any means - there is definitely “a lot” to like about her! 🙂

But she has often done programs where she talks about the fact her dishes are full of fat and calories and butter and cream; she did some great dishes in a Thai style which were lower in fat.

I think we all worry too much about what we eat - we should just eat what we like, but just not eat SO MUCH! I don’t really watch what I eat, but I do try to push away from the table when I am still a little bit hungry.

To be fair to her, cameras do add a certain amount of weight. And I heartily subscribe to the saying ‘never trust a skinny chef’. 😃

Oh, don’t get me wrong - I think there are probably only half-a-dozen women in the universe who are as beautiful or more so than Nigella Lawson. But she is most definitely not a skinny little waif.

A pity, from a Catholic perspective, that there is so much in her life which is morally questionable . . . . 😦 Do ALL our idols have to have feet of clay?

I reckon God gives us all (even the greatest saints) clay feet precisely to prevent us from wrongfully becoming idols to other people.

LOVE “Throwdown with Bobby Flay”… he’s not so into himself that he can’t concede that there are wonderful cooks out there who can “outmaster the master”!

“Ace of Cakes”… my fantasy is an internship at Charm City Cakes! I want to be like Duff when I grow up (with a little Mary Alice thrown in!)

Without wishing to either derail the thread or uncharitably cast aspersions on someone; there are feet of clay and then there is crumbly earth extending up the ankles . . . 😦 The woman is, sadly, an adulterer. I hope and pray that she has repented of such sins.

For me, the shows are Good Eats and Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations.

Favorite Chef: Alton Brown.

Why? factual, science added, and fun to watch. Even on Iron Chef, where he’s “just” the commentator, he brings forward tidbits of trivia. His “Feasting on Asphalt” was excellent, too.

Now, Anthony Bourdain himself is interesting, and from the cuisines I’ve tried, his taste in food is not too far off from my own…

But Anthony does drink, swear, and smoke way too much on camera.

I like Alton, but he’s just so dogmatic-- only one right answer, only one right tool. I saw him explaining that the fry pan for a burger should have a very low side-- just enough to keep the greese in-- so you can get your spatula under them easier.

And I’m thinking ‘Spoken like a man who doesn’t have to clean his own kitchen’…

I have a feeling Paula Deen’s real voice is something like Bea Arthur: low pitched, polished… then the cameras roll and she’s all ‘Haa, ebbuhdie! TuhDaie ahm onna deew zum haighum howkz and blah guyed peee-uhz!’ seriously, she sounds brain damaged.

Can’t take Emeril anymore, either: the toothpaste commercials were the last straw.

Rachel Ray… meh. Used to like her, have heard her say ‘E.V.O.O.’ once to often. Just call it olive oil, dear.

So I don’t watch FN much anymore, used to love Sara Moulson’s show, and David Rosengarten , and ‘Ready Set Cook’ was cool-- audience members shopped, and the chefs had to turn whatever they bought into dinner. If Mario is still on, I guess he’d be my favorite.

My favorite is Giada, then second Paula Deen- BTW her BIL is a priest so DH is not Jewish (sorry is someone bought this up already.)

Chock up a vote for Julia Child.

As an aside, her biography is fascinating and well worth the read. As is the forward in the 1st companion book to the TV series, another thing to track down. She explains in the book, the 1st dozen or so TV shows were lost, with a rather happy tone. She and her producer (Rush Morash, of ‘This Old House’ fame) hadn’t quite figured how to make a precisely timed show yet, and they were apparently quite ugly. Along the lines of 11 minutes to make french onion soup, 15+ to eat french onion soup…

The genre’s come a long way.
