hello to some of you. I believe how I’m use this term is correct but it means a spontaneous prayer one uses as you move through out your day in worship of God. For those not aware of it, it is a commonly used Catholic term. Look beyond the sexual understanding and you’ll find this type of prayer style wonderful. Yes, it is uncomfortable at first but don’t let that keep you from this powerful prayer style. It’s Catholic term can be found in any good dictionary. 'My Lord and my God!!! Thanx.

Indeed --often during the day (and night) --pray little “short prayers” of love etc such is a very ancient practice --during our work, recreation, our daily life - * to keep our heart turned towards the Lord* (as one Carthusian put it).

Some might do one when ever it occurs to them…or when changing what they are doing (opening a door) etc.

Such can be used during periods of prayer in silence as well.

Such a wonderfully ancient form of prayer! One can use words from Scripture (a line from the Psalms etc) or other short prayers. They are great to help one keep the presence of God …they can be said anywhere…and frequently. Even quite frequently.

St. Augustine came up basically with the term* “ejaculatory prayer”* (from *jaculari * -to aim or shoot, to seek) for them - in describing the short prayers that where sort of like arrows sent forth all the time by the hermits of the desert-“darted forth” like arrows. (of course they are for everyone not just hermits from the early days of the Church…he was simply describing the way they lived…but this where the term for this kind of prayer came from).

Also good are short prayers without any words - a simple elevation of the heart to God - turning of ones will to God. A brief uplifting of the heart - a spark of love (I borrow from a Carthusian) with or without words.

The practice of short prayers is both ancient as I noted and very recommended. Short prayers from the heart that are like a spark from a coal, or like darts, arrows…

Some examples of ejaculatory prayers (one could make up ones own or use a line from the psalms etc) Such can be prayed out loud or simply interiorly.

Jesus

Jesus of Nazareth

Maranatha, come Lord Jesus!

Jesus Good Shepherd, I believe in you, I hope in you, I love you

Mary, Star of Hope pray for us

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit

Christus resurrexit!- Christ is risen

Jesus I love you

Come Holy Spirit

Blessed be God

Praised be Jesus Christ, now and forever

I believe in You. I hope in you. I love you. I adore You, O Blessed Trinity.

Blessed be the Holy Trinity

Deo Gratius

Thanks be to God!

Jesus Christ Son of God Savior

Lord Jesus (Dominus Jesus)

God come to my assistance, Lord make haste to help me
(line from Psalm and a favorite of Cassian)

Also I would note in addition: The Church even attaches a partial indulgence to any short prayers when they are offered while carrying out ones duties an enduring the hardships of life --as one raises ones mind in humble trust to God making at least mentally a “pious invocation” (another name for them…) It also refers to the use of such prayers as a “long standing” practice of the faithful.

It is the very first grant in the general norms of indulgences. (get the “Manual of Indulgences” it is published by the USCCB. There is even a list of some examples in the back.)

Compendium issued by Pope Benedict XVI
  1. Is it possible to pray always?
Praying is always possible because the time of the Christian is the time of the risen Christ who remains “with us always” (Matthew 28:20). Prayer and Christian life are therefore inseparable:
Code:
“It is possible to offer frequent and fervent prayer even at the market place or strolling alone. It is possible also in your place of business, while buying or selling, or even while cooking.” (Saint John Chrysostom)

Keep your heart turned towards the Lord!

~ Turn towards the Lord (conversi ad dominum)!

“Not buying what?” he ejaculated.

**Definition: **An ejaculation, sometimes called an aspiration, is a short prayer meant to be memorized and repeated throughout the day. In this way, we can heed Saint Paul’s injunction to “Pray without ceasing” and continually turn our thoughts toward God.

catholicism.about.com/od/prayers/g/Ejaculation.htm

I’ve even heard of protestants using the ejaculatory prayer, “Jesus take the wheel”
Language changes and the use your’e talking about is mostly archaic. If you say “ejacuation prayer” around a native English speaker only one definition comes to mind.

The term “ejaculation” refers to the prayer. It is a correct term.

But yes the better term can be “ejaculatory prayer” or “short prayer” even. Aspiration gets used but that can have a bit of a different aspect depending on the author (though it is still an ejaculatory prayer).

See next post.

Seeing as how i’ve heard it used unironocally in both print and conversation I have to disagree.

“Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death.”
My favorite for those in need. Especially for those who have the green scapular.

“Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom, Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom” I like to sing this for those in purgatory. Jesus answered this prayer the first time, so he will more than likely answer this prayer a second time.

Thanks guys and gals. Jesus, Joseph, and Mary pray for us your children.

Don’t laugh 😛 but I made this prayer up on my own when I was really little and It kinda stuck. See I really cared about animals and even small things like ants, I thought they should all have good lives but here it goes…

Please my good Lord please
Keep all people safe my Lord, keep all people families safe
Keep all animals and things safe my Lord, keep all animals and things families safe
Let them all have good days at work or school or where ever they are going
After work or school or wherever they are going
Let them all come home safely or go wherever they are going
Let all there houses be guarded by a barrier my Lord
A barrier that does not let in any criminals, thieves, fires, demons, devils, or anything bad in my Lord
Anything bad in through Your eyes and Your view
Let this be my Lord so all the houses of your loved ones may be guarded by this barrier, except for the ones who are wicked (I would make the sign of the cross on my bedroom door)
Let us all have good dreams and good sleeps my Lord
Watch over us all my Lord and may time be on our sides (I was always scared of being late to school)
Thank you My Lord Thank You
Thank you My God Thank You
Thank you Mary Martha (St. Mary) Thank You
Thank you St. Alphonsa Thank You

Now can you imagine? I started saying this crazy long prayer when I was just in fourth grade :D. And I’ve said it ever since. Sometimes I crack up when I say the animals and things part… as if animals and bugs have to go to school and work :rotfl:

At the “Watch over us all my Lord” part, I used to list: watch over the Pope my Lord, watch over the Major Archbishop my Lord, watch over the Metropolitan my Lord, watch over all Cardinals my Lord, watch over all Archbishops my Lord, watch over all Bishops my Lord, watch over all Vicar Generals my Lord, watch over all Priests my Lord, watch over all Brothers my Lord, watch over all Sisters my Lord, watch over all of us my Lord, and in personal prayer watch over and my family and me. Around sixth grade I think or middle school time, I took that whole chunk out because I couldn’t get to sleep due to the fact that I would have to list the entire clergy of the Catholic Church in my good night prayer. 😛

That’s a loooooooonnnnnngggg prayer! 😃

I like i except for where it excludes the wicked from God’s protection. The wicked need the most time in this world so that they can amend their ways and try to right their wrongs.

What a wonderful thread! i did not know that the word ejactulate could be used outside a sexual context, but how it is used is consistent with its meaning…oh well…live and learn … I am only the wiser for it 🙂

“My Jesus, mercy!”

“I give you my word, I repeat – if you commend yourselves often to God by saying ‘My Jesus, mercy!’ from the bottom of your heart, you will sin no more, and you will be saved.” - St. Leonard of Port Maurice
